Melanie Troxel August 31, 1972 – Present Nationality: American Raced: 1997 – Present Background: Melanie Troxel was born in Littleton, Colorado in 1972. She became involved in motor sports at an early age, spending her childhood at the race tracks with her dad, Mike Troxel, a veteran dragster and 1988 Top Alcohol Dragster World Champion. Melanie began her own drag racing career while she was in high school. Her first race came at age sixteen, when she drove a car with an engine she built herself for a school project. She received her first drag racing license in Super Comp, but it was just a starting point for the young driver. Troxel attended Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School in Florida, and in 1997 she earned licenses in Funny Cars and in Dragsters, becoming the first woman licensed to drive in both classes. After competing in Federal-Mogul Dragsters for a few years, she made the switch to Top Fuel in 2000, driving for Don Schumacher Racing. In December 2003, she married Funny Car racer Tommy Johnson, Jr. Lack of sponsorship forced her out competition in the latter half of the 2003 season and in 2004, but in 2005 she was back racing. Her first full season in Top Fuel came in 2006 and it was a breakthrough year for Troxel. She earned two victories and won a number of awards for her performances throughout the season. Following two more wins in 2007, she joined the R2B2 Racing Team and began competing in the NHRA Funny Car competition the following year. With her victory at Bristol, Tennessee in May 2008, she became just the fourteenth racer to score wins in both the NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car classes.

In his tenth World Championship finale in a row, the defending rallycross World Champion missed yet another podium finish by 0.4 seconds. In the overall standings, the Swede still holds second behind compatriot Johan Kristoffersson. In the teams’ classification EKS is third at the half-way stage of the season. Ekström made a flying start around the rollercoaster track in Norway. Despite torrential rain, the Swede coped the best with the slippery track at the wheel of his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, and led the overall classification after the first day. “I was a little surprised that we were so fast in the wet, but that was quattro weather,” joked Ekström after the final. “In the dry conditions on Sunday, we struggled again to match the pace of the competition. In the final we lost crucial ground right at the start. This was our own mistake and this ultimately cost us the podium finish.” Although Ekström leaves Norway without a trophy, he still scored 23 important points for the overall standings. After six of twelve rounds, the World Champion is eight points behind the leading VW driver Johan Kristoffersson.

  • SUMMER 2021 SPRING 2020 Chairman’S Thoughts
MARSHALS’ The newsletter of the South East Region of the British Motorsport P OST Marshals Club SUMMER 2021 SPRING 2020 Chairman’s Thoughts Hello and welcome to the Summer. Yep, it’s official our banner above says summer so there is no excuse. With the ever-changing landscape that is covid I’m a bit cautious about the content of this introduction but hopefully we are heading in the right direction and with the return of ‘trainees’ (perhaps soon a grading name consigned to history…) and ‘taster days’ it’s beginning to feel a little more normal. On that point, taster days are an important tool for our recruitment teams and feedback from some attendees at the recent Brands Hatch Speedfest meeting (the first for a long while…) was highly positive, as can be seen from the following comments: “I thoroughly enjoyed the day and the contribution from the post crew were invaluable to making the day enjoyable and learning about the different roles / responsibilities. I’d definitely like to volunteer for more events and will join the BMMC”… “Great day! Give me more! Guys were great! Good fun, yes, give me some more! Good instructions and guidance”… “Thank you so much for yesterday, I haven't stopped smiling since getting home. Everyone on post 6 were just absolutely amazing! I can't fault anything! I learnt so much and was so happy to get involved with as much as I could! I really enjoyed flagging too!! Had the best day ever!” I must also start though with some thanks.

Audi MediaInfo Motorsport Communications Virginia Brusch Phone: +49 841 89-41753 E-mail: [email protected] www.audi -mediacenter.com/en Audi driver Ekström on podium after pouring rain • FIA World Rallycross Champion Mattias Ekström finishes third in Lohéac • Audi DTM driver Nico Müller celebrates impressive rallycross debut Lohéac/Neuburg, September 3, 2017 – Mattias Ekström is back on the road to success in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. At the ninth round in Lohéac, the reigning World Champion finished third – the first podium result since his victory in Hockenheim last May. In front of 75,000 spectators, the Swede was only beaten in the final by his countryman Johan Kristoffersson and the French local matador Sébastien Loeb. In the overall standings, Ekström is third behind Kristoffersson and his team mate Petter Solberg – also like EKS in the team classification. Following heavy rain, the final race in Brittany became a mud festival featuring many overtaking moves. “Saturday sun and Sunday rather more swimming and sliding, a varied weekend,” confirmed Ekström. “I’m actually quite satisfied with my third place, but I’m a little annoyed because we weren’t so far from the front. In the dry and in the rain we were just missing a tiny bit, but we can certainly build on the performance.” In Lohéac, Ekström’s team mates Reinis Nitišs and Toomas Heikkinen once again made the semi- final races for the twelve fastest drivers, but drew the short straw at this stage. “After contact with Andreas Bakkerud my wipers stopped working, from there on I was running blind,” summarized Nitišs and added: “I’m disappointed with the result because it doesn’t show our real performance.” Heikkinen missed the final after a collision with Ken Block.

Any hopes of a podium finish were however destroyed by a slow puncture. The Finn was fifth in the end. Mattias Ekström was forced to retire in the semi-final with clutch problems. In the overall standings, the reigning Rallycross World Champion still holds third – as does EKS in the teams’ classification. In the only overseas race, torrential rain transformed the street circuit into a lake and quagmire on Saturday. Toomas Heikkinen and Mattias Ekström defied the adverse conditions to hold second and fourth place respectively after the first day. “Saturday was a good start, even if we didn’t have the paces of the two Polos of Johan Kristoffersson and Petter Solberg,” said Ekström. “Things also started very well on Sunday in the dry.” The Swede had qualified third for the final races for the best twelve drivers, and started from the front row. A problem with the clutch initially dropped him back, before he had to park his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro on the penultimate lap without drive.

  • Latest Hawley Graduate Joins the 200 MPH Club in New Top Dragster Program
Latest Hawley Graduate Joins the 200 MPH Club in New Top Dragster Program Southern California resident Erik Harris has been a longtime fan of drag racing and fast cars. Just last March, he was able to take being an avid fan one step further and earn his NHRA Super Comp license by attending one of Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School Super Classes in Las Vegas. “I attended Frank’s school basically just as a spectator, just because I wanted to learn more about drag racing,” said Harris, who is a private corporate pilot. “The Super Class was everything that Paul [Shields] explained to me before I signed up. It was just an awesome two day course, it delivered everything and even more than I expected.” “I was very happy to hear that Frank was now offering a Top Dragster course,” he continued. “I think I found out about the new class in January and it was like a birthday present. I received the email about the new Top Dragster course and I was on the phone with Paul the next day.” Each student has their own reason for attending Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School, for Harris it was a little different than others. “I told Frank that I wasn’t interested in getting my own car,” Erik pointed out. “I figured getting into the school’s Top Dragster would be the quickest I would go and it would not only be fun, but help me learn a little more about all the cars, the classes and all what the drivers have to do, the thought process and of course what it feels like during the launch.” Just a little over a year since Harris first earned his Super Comp license, he made the cross-country trip to Florida and Gainesville Raceway to take on his next adventure at Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School.
