Presseinformation the Fabulous Singlettes Presseinformation The Fabulous Singlettes The Return of the Fabulous Singlettes Musik-Show 23. April – 4. The Fabulous Singlettes werden begleitet von: Micky Bister – Musikalische Leitung & Drums // Ralf Schlüter – Flügel & Keyboard // Martin Scheffler – Gitarre // Dominik Mostert – Bass // Karl-Heinz Engelhardt – Saxofon „This show was simply brilliant“ Festival Times, Edinburgh „Der beste Australien-Export seit Kylie Minogue“ Der Tagesspiegel, Berlin Weitere Infos unter www.thefabuloussinglettes.com.au Karten-Telefon 030 – 390 665 50 [email protected] Karten inkl. aller Gebühren: VVK 27,00 – 40,00 // AK 23,70 – 35,00 Ermäßigte Karten ab € 12,50 Pressestelle BAR JEDER VERNUNFT / TIPI AM KANZLERAMT Sabine Wenger – Tel. 030-390 665 65 – [email protected] Sandra Basenach – Tel. 030-390 665 66 – [email protected] www.bar-jeder-vernunft.de - www.tipi-am-kanzleramt.de Stand: 24. April 2019 Seite 3 / 4 Zur Person Having begun in a former funeral parlour in Sydney’s Taylor Square in 1986 (and knocking audiences dead ever since) this funny, irreverent, high camp trio has made regular TV appearances across the globe and starred in their own BBC and ITV specials. THE FABULOUS SINGLETTES have sold out shows in London’s West End, Royal Albert Hall, Royal Variety performances, and Wembley Arena; Edinburgh; Hamburg; Vienna; Sydney Festival and Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Berlin has also adopted the trio as its favourite Australian act, with its major cabaret venues inviting the girls back as the headline act to sell out shows each year over the past decade. Having performed with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Peter Allen, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey, THE FABULOUS SINGLETTES neatly exhume the bodies of a glorious era that had most of America’s women performers staggering under the weight of hair-dos and lashings of mascara. Naomi Eyers (‘As she moved through the crowd singing … four men in my row fainted’ – The Age) Melissa Langton (‘a knock-out voice, impeccable comic timing’ – The Age) and Gina Hogan sing up a storm, plus of course dance moves to die for, frocks galore and beehives that are a triumph of hairspray over gravity. But it’s the impeccable harmonies and sly, camp humor that have made this mega-girl group a hit all over the world. THE FABULOUS SINGLETTES celebrate the 60s with immaculate covers of the Girl Group era (think The Ronettes, The Supremes, The Chiffons, The Shangri-Las, Dusty Springfield and many more). They combine this with outrageous humour, which sends up the fashions and attitudes of the decade that changed the world. • Little Britain’S Fictional Teenage Single Mother, Vicky Pollard
Dynamics of Social Class Contempt in Contemporary British Television Comedy Sharon Lockyer School of Social Sciences Brunel University Uxbridge Middlesex UB8 3PH, UK Tel: +44(0)1895 267373 Email: [email protected] Dynamics of Social Class Contempt in Contemporary British Television Comedy Dynamics of Social Class Contempt in Contemporary British Television Comedy Abstract British television comedy has often ridiculed the complexities and characteristics of social class structures and identities. In recent years poor white socially marginalised groups, now popularly referred to as “chavs”, have become a prevalent comedy target. One of the most popular and controversial television “comedy chavs” is Little Britain’s fictional teenage single mother, Vicky Pollard. This paper examines the representation of Vicky Pollard in light of contemporary widespread abuse of the white working class. Highlighting the polysemic and ambivalent nature of Vicky Pollard’s representation, the paper argues that whilst Little Britain’s characterisation of Vicky Pollard largely contributes to contemporary widespread demonization of the working class, there are moments within Little Britain when a more sympathetic tone towards the poor working class may be read, and where chav identities are used to ridicule the pretensions, superficiality, and falsity of middle-class identities. The paper concludes that television comedy has been, and continues to be, a significant vehicle through which serious concerns, anxieties, and questions about social class and class identities are discursively constructed and contested. Keywords: chavs; social class; television comedy; Little Britain; Vicky Pollard; interpretive diversity; representation 2 Dynamics of Social Class Contempt in Contemporary British Television Comedy Introduction Sending up the dynamics and intricacies of the British class system has been a central ingredient of British television comedy since the 1950s.
