NOVEMBER 29, 2008 • EAST CAROLINA LADY PIRATES • MINGES COLISEUM, GREENVILLE, N.C. Don’t invite the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team over for a Thanksgiving weekend.

The Aggies (3-2) aren’t very good guest. For the second straight season, the Aggies won a Thanksgiving weekend tournament on someone else’s home fl oor. This time it was the Lady Pirate Invitational played at East Carolina’s Minges Coliseum as the Aggies defeated ECU 72-53.

The rudest visitors throughout the weekend were the Aggies two outstanding senior performers Brittanie Taylor-James and Amber Bland. Taylor-James led the Aggies with a career-high 28 points on 10-for-10 shooting from the line. For her efforts, she earned tournament MVP honors by scoring 41 points and grabbing 13 rebounds over two games.

Bland was named to the all-tournament team as well. Bland scored 17 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with her fi ve steals. For the tournament, Bland scored 42 points, pulled down 20 rebounds and had an impressive 11 steals.

Despite the Pirates’ size advantage, the Aggies were able to keep the ball out of the post by sprinting into the passing lanes or beating the bigger Pirates down the fl oor. When the Pirates did get the ball down low, the faster Aggies swarmed to the

basketball to force turnovers.  The Pirates shot just 35 percent from fl oor and were just 4-for- 21 from 3-point range. ECU turned the ball over 24 times as the Aggies compiled 15 steals on the night and 31 steals for the tournament.

“We saw that they were big, but didn’t possess a lot of speed,’’ said Bibbs, who was astonished that her team was able to out- WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WOMEN'S the Pirates 51-32. “Even though we were undersized, we know that rebounding isn’t always all about height. We told the ladies to use their athleticism to beat them down the fl oor and to beat them into position for outs and loose balls. I’m proud of what we were able to do on the boards against this team.”

 Bibbs was also impressed out how the Aggies were able to pull away despite not having starters Reisha Bullock and Nakia DeBlanc. Two more Aggie starters – Jaleesa Sams and Bland – played hurt most of the night.

94 TOP 10 MOMENTS of the 2008-09 Season WAKE-UP CALL

DECEMBER 6, 2008 • • CORBETT SPORTS CENTER, GREENSBORO, N.C. The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team just came off of a game where it was very competitive against nationally-ranked Auburn.

Days before that, the Aggies looked impressive in winning East Carolina’s Lady Pirate Invitational. Therefore, a team like Norfolk State who came into Corbett Sports Center Saturday afternoon winless and labeled with being picked to fi nish last in the MEAC, could not give the Aggies a challenge.

For 20 minutes, the Spartans gave the Aggies a very stiff challenge before the Aggies put together a dominating second half performance to win 90-59 in what was the conference opener for both schools.

Brittanie Taylor-James fi nished with 22 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Ta’Wuana Cook added 20 points and three assists, while Amber Bland contributed 18 points and fi ve rebounds as the Aggies grabbed a team-record 62 rebounds for the game. All 10 Aggies that played had at least one rebound.

Seven of Danelle Tate’s team-high 13 points came in a fi rst half where the Spartans jogged into the locker room staring at a stunned crowd at Corbett. The Spartans (0-5, 0-1 MEAC), who had lost their last four games to the Aggies by an average 24.0 points, led 29-28 at the half. They held the Aggies to just 23.3 percent shooting to go alongside 18 fi rst-half Aggie turnovers.

“Our girls took them for granted,’’ head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs admitted. “They thought they could go out and not do the things they are supposed to do to win. I’ve always told my teams that regardless of who you are playing, you should never go out and give less than your best. We gave less than our best in that fi rst half.”



The Aggies tried their hardest to make up for not giving their best in the fi rst half as they outscored the Spartans 62-30 in the second half. Tyeisha Bridges kept the shock going early in the second half, however, with a jump shot that gave the Spartans a 31-28 lead. Genor Dalton’s jumper kept the Spartans in the lead at 33-32 three minutes into the second half.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL After a Cook free throw tied the game at 33, Lamona Smalley made the play that got the Aggies going for the rest of the half. Smalley blocked a jump shot by Marquilla Evans, grabbed the rebound and fi red an outlet pass to a sprinting Cook who fi nished the play off with a layup that led to an 11-2 run that gave the Aggies a 46-35 lead with 14 minutes to play.

The Spartans were able to push the lead back under 10 with two free throws from

 Tate. But the Aggies just went on another tear. This time the Aggies scored 13 unanswered points to take a 59-37 lead. The Aggies defense became so good; the Spartans went nearly three minutes without even attempting a shot.

95 NORTH CAROLINA CONQUERERS

JANUARY 5, 2009 • CHARLOTTE 49ERS • HALTON ARENA, CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Before the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team can rise to the level of being one of the best mid-majors in the country, the Aggies fi rst must take care of trying to be one of the best mid-majors in North Carolina.

They are well on their way to accomplishing that after a huge 87-80 win over the Charlotte 49ers Monday night at Halton Arena. In terms of RPI ranking, the Aggies scored one of the biggest upset in school history. The 49ers came into the game with a RPI ranking of 34. Charlotte is the highest ranked RPI opponent the Aggies have ever defeated dating back the RPI’s inception in 1982.

With the win, the Aggies should bump into the top 100 in the RPI rankings. The win also improved the Aggies to 4-0 against in-state schools this season. Among those victories is a win over East Carolina of Conference USA and Monday’s win over Charlotte of the Atlantic 10.

“In both instances, we went into their place and won,’’ said Aggies head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs about the wins over ECU and Charlotte. “Tonight was such a big step forward for our program. Our ladies put two halves together and I am so proud of them.”

Amber Bland returned to her scoring ways on Monday night. The Ohio native led the Aggies with 26 points and

10 rebounds on 10-for-17 shooting as she recorded the  sixth double-double of her career. Her performance also marked the 26th time she has scored 20 or points in her career, but it was just the third time she has done it in the last 19 games.

The MEAC’s leading scorer Brittanie Taylor-James added 19, and Ta’Wuana Cook inched closer to Aggie history. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WOMEN'S She fi nished with 18 points, putting eight points away from becoming just the 10th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

The Aggies led by as many as 10 in the second half. But the 49ers cut the lead to 81-78 behind a Traci Ray 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining. Taylor-James followed Ray’s jumper  with a missed jumper, but she grabbed one of the Aggies 19 offensive rebounds on the night and scored to give the Aggies a 5-point cushion.

96 REDEMPTION, SORT OF

JANUARY 12, 2009 • COPPIN STATE EAGLES • COPPIN CENTER, , What may have been the most telling moment in an otherwise dominating performance by the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team on Monday occurred at the 6:35 mark of the second half. Aggies senior guard Amber Bland stepped in front of a Shinaa Woods pass for a , and sprinted down court to fi nish off an easy layup with a huge smile on her face.

Yes, Coppin State superstar guards Shalamar Oakley and Rashida Suber’s college careers are over, therefore, the Eagles team the Aggies beat 75-57 at the Coppin Center Monday night doesn’t look too similar to the Eagles team that beat N.C. A&T in the MEAC Tournament championship game last season.

But the jersey still said Coppin State. Bland’s smile was just a small sense of satisfaction after what was a heartbreaking loss to the Eagles in March.

“At that moment it was kind of a relief to know we came in here and got back some of the pride they took from us last year,’’ said Bland, who was a part of the Aggies 72-70 loss to the Eagles in the MEAC title game, in which Suber hit a layup with seconds remaining to earn the win.

“(Head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs) kept telling us it wasn’t a revenge game, but it kind of was,’’ Bland

 continued. “No, it’s not the same as beating them with Suber and Oakley, but it still felt good.”

Brittanie Taylor-James, coming off of her fi rst MEAC Player of the Week honor, had another stellar game with 22 points and fi ve rebounds on 8-for-14 shooting. Bland added 16 points, and another player who certainly

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL remembers last season’s championship game – Lamona Smalley – had 16 points and six rebounds off the Aggies bench.

“It wasn’t revenge or anything,’’ said Smalley, who fouled out of the title game during crunch time. “We just wanted to win to get that weight off our backs. We are picked to

 win it, but they have been the standard in the conference for a long time. We wanted to take the pressure off of us and put it on them.”

97 SAMS AND THE UNLIKELY HERO

JANUARY 19, 2009 • • CORBETT SPORTS CENTER, GREENSBORO, NC

Injuries, illnesses and other tough circumstances have defi ned the 2008-09 seasons of junior Shantar Waddell and sophomore Jaleesa Sams.

That defi nition changed for the two Aggie forwards on Monday night when they helped the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team rally from a 15-point second-half defi cit to defeat Delaware State 56-51 at Corbett Sports Center in a battle of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the MEAC.

Their late heroics helped the Aggies (11-5, 5-0 MEAC) remain unbeaten in the conference and at home as the Aggies extended their home winning streak to 15. Waddell scored eight points, went 3-for-3 from the fl oor, hit two crucial free throws in crunch time, grabbed three rebounds, blocked a shot and earned a steal all in a span of 11 minutes.

Sams on the other hand, overcame a shaky fi rst half to fi nish with 10 points, four steals and no second-half turnovers. On a side note, Brittanie Taylor-James became the 11th player in the program’s history to reach 1,000 points for her career as she led the Aggies with 16 points.

Waddell entered at the Aggies lowest point of the game. With 11:04 remaining, the Aggies were facing their biggest defi cit of the game at 15 points, 45-30. Therefore, Bibbs turned to a player who had played just 44 minutes in seven games this season.

“We knew we needed some help,’’ said head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. “I told (associate head coach Tarrell Robinson) that we needed to see what Shantar can do. She can rebound and we hadn’t done much of that the whole game.”

As for Sams, she was coming off of a fi rst half in which she turned the ball over four times, was 0-for-2 from the fl oor and she had two fouls.

“The coaches told me I must be suffering from the case of the nerves again,’’ said Sams, who has missed time this season because of a knee injury, an illness and a death in the family. “Sometimes I start games that way. Once I calmed myself, the game came a lot easier to

me.” 

Sams showed that by putting the ball on the fl oor and charging to the basket for a layup to cut the Hornets lead to 45-32 with 10:45 remaining. Waddell then earned a steal, which led to a missed Amber Bland 3-pointer. But Waddell grabbed the offensive rebound and put it in the basket to trim the lead to 11. On the Aggies ensuing possession, Taylor-James missed a three, but had her shot followed by Sams to put the Aggies down 45-36. DSU’s Courtney Crockett fi nally ended the Aggies 6-0 run by putting her head down and driving to the basket

for a layup. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WOMEN'S

But Sams would strike again. The New Castle, Pa., sophomore put the ball on the fl oor again and drove to the basket to score. She was fouled on the play and completed the 3-point play to put the Aggies down 47-39 with 8:15 to play. Waddell and Sams continued their onslaught as Sams earned a steal and Waddell capitalized with a layup to cut the lead to six. Waddell would hit three out of four free throws over a two-minute span to make it 49-44 with 5:50 remaining.

 Taylor-James got involved with a jumper and a 3-pointer to move the Aggies to within two at 51-49 with 4:42 to play. After a Tierra Thomas free throw, the Aggies took their fi rst lead since the 10:13 mark of the fi rst half as Waddell took down a Sams miss and put it back in the basket for a 52-51 Aggies lead.

98 N.C. A&T vs. HAMPTON I

FEBRUARY 2, 2009 • HAMPTON PIRATES • HU CONVOCATION CENTER, HAMPTON, VIRGINIA

Twenty games into the 2008-09 season, there is at least one thing you can say about the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team. They can take a punch.

The Aggies rallied from a 13-point halftime defi cit to beat Hampton 75-69 at the HU Convocation Center Monday night. Brittanie Taylor-James led the Aggies with 26 points. Sophomore Jaleesa Sams recorded her fourth career double- double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Her 12 rebounds tied a career high.

Monday’s game marked the second time in two weeks the Aggies have rallied from a double-digit defi cit in the second half to win. The Aggies have managed to win nine of the 11 games in which they have trailed at the half this season, including Monday’s game.

Despite making its fi rst run to take down the Pirates lead, N.C. A&T could not wrestle the lead away from the Pirates until Sams hit a free throw just inside the free throw line to tie the game at 64 with 3:25 remaining. The Pirates went on a 5-0 run capped off by a Fortune jumper that gave the Pirates a 69-64 advantage with a little more than two minutes remaining.

The Aggies, who had not deplored the full brunt of their press throughout the game, went back to their pressure even with the speed of the Pirate guards.

After Amber Bland grabbed one of her seven offensive rebounds, she found Taylor-James underneath for a layup. Ta’Wuana Cook then stepped in front of a Whitney Hill pass to cut the Pirates lead to one at 69-68 with 1:05 to play. During

 another Aggies trap, Bernadette Fortune had the basketball go off of her foot for one of the Pirates’ 26 turnovers.

Taylor-James made them pay with a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Aggies a 71-69 with 48 seconds remaining. It was N.C. A&T’s fi rst lead since the 6:01 mark of the fi rst half. Hampton’s Quanneisha Perry missed a baseline jumper that would have tied the game. Bland grabbed the rebound – her 12th of the game – and was fouled. Bland hit two free throws WOMEN'S BASKETBALL with 27 seconds remaining to seal the game.

“They were ready for us tonight,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. “But our kids never believed they were out of this game. And I really believe it’s good that we are being tested because it gives us an opportunity to show character.”

99 N.C A&T VS. HAMPTON, THE SEQUEL (BETTER THAN THE FIRST)

MARCH 2, 2009 • PIRATES • CORBETT SPORTS CENTER, GREENSBORO, NC The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team took a step closer in getting prepared for the March 9-14 MEAC Tournament in Winston-Salem by doing some things it has never done. For the fi rst time since she fi rst suited up as an Aggie in 2006, N.C. A&T had to play nearly an entire game without star guard Amber Bland. And for the fi rst time since their two-year run as MEAC regular-season champions, a conference opponent forced the Aggies into overtime in a regular-season game.

Although it was touch-and-go for a while, the Aggies passed both examinations as they defeated the Hampton Pirates 81-72 in overtime without the services of Bland, the school’s second all-time leading scorer. The win was especially gratifying and emotional for Bland, Brittanie Taylor-James and Ahmad Williams as all three seniors played their fi nal game in Corbett Sports Center.

Taylor-James, reigning MEAC Player of the Week, led all scorers with 31 points. Sophomore Jaleesa Sams had 19 points and fi ve steals, and junior Lamona Smalley added 11 points and nine rebounds. The three Aggie seniors leave with a 21-game home winning streak intact. It is the fourth longest home winning streak in the nation.

Williams and Taylor-James did play the game without their fellow senior because she sustained a knee injury against Howard on Saturday. Bland did keep her streak of consecutive games played alive at 91 as she limped on to the court as her named was announced as a starter.

In fact, the Aggies have played 91 games over Bland’s three-year career. Bland has started all 91 of them. But seven seconds into the game, N.C. A&T head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs called timeout to remove her.

The Lady Aggies look just fi ne minus Bland in the fi rst half. Behind 20 fi rst-half points from Taylor-James, the Aggies held a 44-26 lead at halftime. A Melanie Warner offensive foul turned into a Ta’Wuana Cook runner that gave the Aggies a 50-34 lead with 15:17 remaining. But the Aggies went nearly fi ve minutes without scoring, allowing

the Pirates to go on a 16-0 run to tie the game. 

Despite the spurt, the Aggies would not give up the lead and led by seven, 65-58, after Sams completed a drive to the basket that resulted in a 3-point play with 2:42 remaining in regulation. Hampton guard Mikki Clayton responded by hitting a 3-pointer to trim the lead to four. After a Taylor-James three rolled around the rim and spun out, Jerika Jenkins drove to the basket to put Hampton down 65-63 with 1:26 to play.

The teams would trade free throws, which led to another Jenkins WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WOMEN'S tough drive. She battled her way into the lane and threw up a shot over two Aggie defenders to send the game into overtime tied at 66.

The Pirates and the Aggies played evenly over the fi rst four minutes of overtime, before a Clayton turnover gave the Aggies the edge they needed. Cook capitalized on the turnover by going to the basket, getting bumped by Jenkins and throwing up a tough shot that went through the basket for a score. Cook completed the 3-

point play for a 76-72 Aggies lead. Another Pirates turnover led to  two free throws by Smalley that sealed the win for the Aggies with 45 seconds remaining.

100 STATEMENT GAME (WE’RE HERE TO WIN IT)

MARCH 11, 2009 • MEAC TOURNAMENT • LJVM, WINSTON-SALEM, NC Things are going as planned. Throughout a season in which the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team endured several injuries to key players, head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs preached the need for others to step up and produce.

Now that it is the postseason, those players appear prepared to contribute. The Aggies had fi ve players score in double fi gures as they defeated Howard 80-52 in the quarterfi nals of the MEAC Tournament at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum Wednesday afternoon. After struggling in the fi rst game of the tournament over the past three seasons, the Aggies cruised to victory over Howard.

Three-time all-conference performer Amber Bland, who missed the Aggies last two games with a knee injury, led the Aggies with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting. MEAC Player of the Year Brittanie Taylor-James and Ta’Wuana Cook had 14 points apiece. Nakia DeBlanc and Reisha Bullock had 10 apiece.

A year ago in the quarterfi nals, the ninth- seeded Florida A&M Rattlers challenged the Aggies throughout the game before N.C. A&T was able to pull away late.

Wednesday’s game against the Bison was  a different story. The Aggies played the role of No. 1 seed to perfection. After losing the 2008 MEAC Tournament championship game by two points to Coppin State, the Aggies are focused on making sure they don’t miss out on another chance to play in the NCAA Tournament.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL “One down two to go,’’ said Taylor-James. “We’re on a mission.”

The Aggies appear content on reaching their goal by playing defense. N.C. A&T is known for its full-court pressure defense. But on Wednesday, the Aggies switched defenses several times to keep the Bison

 off balance. The Bison shot just 32.1 percent from the fl oor and scored just 14 points in the paint.

101 N.C. A&T VS. HAMPTON III (ANTI-CLIMATIC)

MARCH 14, 2009 • HAMPTON PIRATES • LJVM, WINSTON-SALEM, NC

Samara Dobbins-Johnson stood courtside after the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team defeated Hampton 76-54 Saturday afternoon in the MEAC Tournament Championship game at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

She was dressed down in blue and gold Aggie sweats with a digital camera in her right hand a big smile draped over her face. Johnson, who was the starting point guard on N.C. A&T’s 1994 team that won the MEAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, was one of the few people at the LJVM Saturday who knew how the elated Aggie basketball players felt after completing their goals.

It’s been 15 years, but Johnson fi nally has that feeling back after her beloved Aggies put together a dominating performance that saw them win their three tournament games by an average of 22.7 points. It was tournament championship No. 10 for Aggies head coach Patricia Cage- Bibbs and her fi rst as the leader of N.C. A&T’s program.

Amber Bland led the way on Saturday by scoring 16 of her 18 points in the fi rst half. She earned Most Outstanding Player of the tournament honors. MEAC Player of the Year Brittanie Taylor-James had 17 points, six rebounds and three steals. Lamona Smalley, who earned all-tournament team accolades, had 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to earn her 12th career double-double. Jaleesa Sams added 13 points and fi ve boards.

The recent Aggies discussed just how benefi cial the ‘94 Aggies were in sharing their experiences as the top team in the MEAC.

And the Aggies absorbed the sermons well. In 1994, the Aggies won impressively 87-70 over S.C. State. The current Aggies followed suit. They jumped all over the

Pirates early and never relented.  Smalley, who recalls the Aggies heartbreaking 72-70 loss to Coppin State in the title game last season, started the Aggies off in the right direction. The 6-foot Philadelphia native was visibly upset after fouling out of last season’s title game as she helplessly watched the game turn in Coppin State’s favor after her departure.

She made sure to establish herself early in the ‘09 game. It was her dribble penetration against the Hampton post

players that gave the Pirates problems all day. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WOMEN'S

Then Bland happened. In a matter of only three minutes, Bland turned Hampton from a team looking for a way to pull off an upset into a team looking for a way to stop an avalanche of Bland baskets. Bland scored 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting during a 16-5 run that saw the Aggies take a 33-14 lead over the Pirates with 3:03 remaining in the fi rst half. Bland’s onslaught included three 3-pointers, and it forced Hampton to use two 30-second timeouts. The

 Pirates never got any closer than 14 the rest of the way, and they trailed by as many as 25 during the game.

102 NOT BAD FOR A 15-YEAR ABSENCE

MARCH 21, 2009 • FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES • GWINNETT ARENA, DULUTH, GEORGIA

Florida State head women’s basketball coach Sue Semrau was not going to be taken by surprise despite North Carolina A&T’s relative anonymity to the college basketball world.

Therefore, she was not stunned when the 14th-seeded Aggies gave her third-seeded Seminoles a tremendous fi ght before losing 83-71 in the fi rst round of the WNCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Gwinnett Arena.

N.C. A&T junior point guard Ta’Wuana Cook led all scorers with 19 points. She also had fi ve rebounds and three steals. Junior Lamona Smalley added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Aggies, and three-time fi rst-team all-conference senior Amber Bland scored 13 points, dished out six assists and had eight rebounds. Sophomore Jaleesa Sams contributed with 13 points, six boards and three assists.

“They have two great players,’’ said Semrau about MEAC Player of the Year Brittanie Taylor-James and Bland. “They’re outstanding jump shooters, so I told my team they had to stay out there on the perimeter and guard them closely. If you allow them to get off clean looks both of them can knock down jump shots with regularity.”

Locking up Taylor-James and Bland seemed to be the Seminoles’ plan from the day they arrived in Duluth because neither player is a stranger to the Florida State coaching staff. On Friday, Semrau said she recruited Bland out of Boardman High School in Ohio. FSU associate head coach Cori Close was once an assistant at UC-Santa Barbara, where Taylor-James started her career.

Florida State’s concentration on the two Aggie superstars yielded a combined 6-for-22 shooting performance from Taylor-James and Bland. Fortunately for the Aggies, who fi nished their season at 26-7, the future looks bright because the underclassmen stepped to the forefront. The same way Semrau was not going to be fooled into believing the Aggies were an automatic win, Sams, Cook and Smalley were not going to be intimidated by Florida State’s stature as the ACC regular-season co-champions.



N.C. A&T trailed by as many as 13 in the fi rst half, but within the fi rst four minutes of the second half, the Seminoles lead was down to eight at 49-41. The Aggies would continue to cut into the lead as Cook took the ball away from FSU’s Angel Gray and turned the steal into a fastbreak layup that trimmed the lead to six. After two FSU free throws, Taylor-James made her fi rst fi eld goal of the game six minutes into the second half by hitting a 3-pointer just in front of press row to cut FSU’s lead to 51-46.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL N.C. A&T cut it to three on a beautifully executed up and under move by Smalley that was shown on many of the highlight shows Saturday night. But Florida State, who had used its 6-4 duo of Cierra Bravard and Jacinta Monroe to score easy buckets against the smaller Aggies most of the game, turned to their perimeter players to seal the win.

The Seminoles went inside to Monroe for two points. After an Aggies turnover, Alysha

Harvin hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 12:22 remaining in the game to push  FSU’s lead to eight. On the Seminoles next possession, they went inside again to Bravard for another easy look at the basket and 10-point lead.
