Philadelphia, Pa. - Drexel (18-9, 12-6 CAA) gave Katrina Martin a mem- orable senior day in her last home game as a Dragon, beating Old Dominion (19-8, 15-3 CAA) for the first time in school history, 71-68. The loss bumps the Lady Monarchs out of a tie with Delaware for the regular season CAA championship, denying ODU its 14th consecutive conference championship. Kira Karlstrom led Drexel with a career-high 18 points, six rebounds and five assists and shot 4-for-5 from deep. Nicole Hester turned in a superlative defensive effort, swiping Drexel season-high seven steals, six in the second half, and blocking two shots. Martin scored 15 points in front of a large crowd of her friends and family.

Drexel opened the game with a 15-2 run and never looked back, pushing the lead to as many as 19 points in the second half. Karlstrom and Narissa Suber combined to drain three treys during the stretch. Drexel shot a season-best 52.9 percent from deep, connecting on nine of 17 three-point attempts. Suber and Karlstrom had four treys apiece.

The Dragons played solid defense and worked hard to outrebound Old Dominion 19-12 in the first half. Drexel’s defense collapsed on Old Dominion’s slashing guards and contested every interior shot and . Suber closed out the period by dropping a trifecta in the final seconds of play to give Drexel a 32-23 at the half.

Delise Johnson gave the Dragons some quality minutes in the first half, grabbing three offensive rebounds and contributing four points. Johnson gave Drexel some size in the post that helped to limit Tiffany Green, who had 12 points and 15 rebounds against the Dragons in the teams’ last meeting, to just two points and three boards in the first half.

The Lady Monarchs made a run in the second half, to cut the lead to seven points in the first two minutes of play. But Hester came up with steals on consecutive possessions and a jumper by Catherine Scanlon triggered a 11-4 Dragon spurt capped by a Karlstrom three that gave Drexel its largest lead of the game at 50-31.

After an Old Dominion time out, the Lady Monarchs regrouped and went on to out score Drexel 16-5 over the next six minutes of play. Karlstrom again played rally-killer when she emerged from a pack of Lady Monarchs with a rebound then hit a three from the top of the arc on the ensuing possession to give Drexel a 12-point lead with 4:18 to go.

The lead disappeared in the final minute of the game as Old Dominion attacked the basket and Drexel shot 8-for-12 from the free-throw line to let the Lady Monarchs back into the game in the final seconds. Shareese Grant had 11 points and five assists for Old Dominion and TJ Jordan led the team with 14 points on 3-of-8 shooting from three-point land. 2008-09 Drexel Women’ s Basketball Hester Earns “Most Courageous” Honor Nicole Hester was honored with the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s “Most Courageous Hester’s Story Featured in Chicken Soup Athlete” award on Monday, Jan. 26, at the PSWA’s annual banquet. Game 1 American 74, Drexel 65 Nov. 16, 2008 Washington, D.C. - Gabriela Marginean scored 22 of her game-high 31 points in the second half, but her spurt was not enough to bring the Dragons back from a 15-point first-half deficit as Drexel lost its season opener 74-65 to the American Eagles (2-0). Freshman Kamile Nacickaite had 11 points in her first game. . Drexel pulled out to an early lead in the first half as Jasmina Rosseel knocked down her first three three-point attempts. Rosseel's third trey gave the Dragons a 16-11 lead before early-season jitters com- bined with tenacious pressure defense by the Eagles kicked in to cause a flurry of Drexel turnovers. The miscues, 13 of them in the first half for the Dragons, cued a 27-7 run by American. Nicole Ryan capped the barrage with a three-pointer from just over half court that banked in at the buzzer, sending the Eagles into the locker room with a 38-23 lead. The Dragons used some pressure of their own to force three early turnovers in the second half and capitalize to trim American's lead to eight points mid- way through the period. A jumper by Marginean fol- lowed up by two Andrea Peterson free throws at the 8:54 mark cut American's lead to just two points at 48-46. But a three-point play and a half-court for

a break-away by Kirk keyed a 14-4 American Drexel University Dragons run that put the game out of reach for the Dragons.

Game 2 Drexel 76, Saint Joe’s 61 Nov. 19, 2008 Philadelphia - Gabriela Marginean reached the 30- point mark for a second straight game while helping Drexel to its second win in the last three meetings over city rival Saint Joseph's. Drexel (1-1) trailed by as many as 10 points before outscoring the Hawks (1-2) 44-26 in the second half for a 76-61 victory. Jasmina Rosseel chipped in 16 points on 4-for-7 three-point shooting and freshman Kamile Nacickaite led the Dragons with eight rebounds. Marginean was once again a force for the Dragons, scoring 35 points on 13-for-22 shooting from the field. She also grabbed six boards and went 8-for-9 from the line with her first free-throw miss this sea- son. The Dragons, as a team shot 50-percent from the floor. The team's defense held Saint Joseph's to 7-for- 23 shooting in the second period when the Dragons pulled away for the victory. After a sloppy start, Drexel dissipated what had been a 10-point Saint Joseph's advantage midway through the first half and took a pair of short-lived leads before entering the half trailing 35-32. The Hawks opened the second period with another quick start, going on a 5-0 run to take a 41-32 lead on a layup by leading scorer Brittany Ford. But Ford’s bucket would be the last for La Salle for the next 11- plus minutes as Drexel reeled off a 21-1 run capped by a Rosseel three-pointer to close out the win. 2008-09 Drexel Women’ s Basketball

Game 3 La Salle 48, Drexel 46 Nov. 22, 2008 Philadelphia - A pair of free throws by Margaret Elderton with six seconds left in a contest knotted at 46-46 proved to be the decisive points in a 48-46 loss to La Salle (3-1) in another tight city rivalry game. Gabriela Marginean finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Dragons (2-1) in both categories.

After shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first half and leading by six at the break. Drexel's offense ground to a halt in the second period as the team shot just 27.8 percent from the field and 1-for-9 from deep. The Dragons managed just 17 points on seven field goals and a pair of free throws. La Salle did not generate much more in their offensive sets, shooting just 28.6 percent (6-for-21), but the Explorers made 19 trips to the free-throw line and converted 12 of them. Morgan Robertson led La Salle with 13 points, seven from the foul line, and five rebounds.

Drexel's defense switched on the picks. Hale popped Drexel University Dragons out to cover her off the final screen and was immedi- ately whistled for the blocking foul.

The Dragons held Bucknell to 25.4 per- cent shooting from the floor and the Bison's 35 points was their lowest offensive output in the pro- gram's history. Contributing in large part to the team's stifling defense was senior Brooke Cornish who swatted three shots for a second straight game. Marginean scored 17 of Drexel's 20 points in the first half, helping to keep the Dragons in a 20-20 tie at halftime despite shooting 26.7 percent from the floor and just 2-of-9 from deep. Andrea Peterson added 11 points and shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Marginean scored the Dragons' first 12 points of the game, deftly reading screens and making back door cuts for five straight layups on five attempts. Game 18 Drexel 60, Towson 41 Jan. 25, 2009 Philadelphia - Drexel used its best shooting game of the season, 58.3 percent from the floor, and a combi- nation of 19 points from Gabriela Marginean and 15 from Jasmina Rosseel to dispatch Towson (11-6, 3-4) 60-41 on Homecoming at the DAC. Shanae Baker- Brice led the Tigers with 14 points and three assists. The Dragons improve to 10-8 on the season and 5-2 in CAA play. The contest was viewed by a regional tel- evision audience on The Comcast Network. After a sloppy start that included six turnovers in the first three minutes of play, Drexel settled itself to make 11-of-19 shots in the first half (57.9 percent) and recover from a seven-point deficit in the early going of the contest. While the Tigers' pressure defense pestered the Dragons into committing 22 turnovers, Drexel's defense in half-court sets provid- ed the lift it needed to pull away for a sizeable win. The Dragons held Towson to just 27.1 percent shoot- ing from the floor and 18.8 percent from deep. Drexel's victory preserved its sterling 4-0 mark in conference home games this season. It is also their sixth straight victory in televised contests. In a rivalry that has been hotly contested in recent years, the 19- point Drexel win was the Dragons' largest margin of victory over the Tigers since the 2001-02 season. The Tigers’ 41 points was their lowest offensive output of the season and the lowest total ever against Drexel. 2008-09 Drexel Women’ s Basketball

The victory is Drexel's third straight, moving the Dragons into a four-way tie atop the CAA standings with James Madison, Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth. Nicole Hester led the Dragons with nine rebounds and five assists to go along with six points and a pair of steals in one of her best all-around performances of the season. Nicole Hester scored a season-best 13 points and pulled down a team-leading 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Jasmina Rosseel (15 points) and Andrea Peterson (11 points) also reached double figures for the Dragons (13-8, 8-2) who remain in a first-place tie with James Madison and Virginia Commonwealth. Marginean, who had been held to eight points in the first period, scored 11 points in the first 9:42 of the second period during the Dragons’ spurt. Marisa Crane shoveled a pass to Marginean on a back door cut on the baseline for a quick layup that gave Drexel a 55-31 lead at the 11:09 mark to cap the run. Hester, who turned in her best performance of the season, gave the Dragons their largest lead of the contest, 62-34, when she knocked down her third three-pointer of the game with just over eight min- Drexel University Dragons utes in the period. The senior scored seven of her season-high 13 points in the second half.

Game 22 Drexel 76, William & Mary 74 (OT) Feb. 8, 2009 Philadelphia - Freshman Marisa Crane hit a pull-up jumper in the lane with two seconds left in overtime to give her team a 76-74 victory over William & Mary (11-11, 4-7). The Dragons (14-8, 9-2) erased a five- point deficit with less than three minutes left in regu- lation when a by Gabriela Marginean knot- ted the score at 66-66 with 12.6 seconds remaining. Marginean, who finished with 31 points and 10 rebounds, scored eight of Drexel's 10 points in over- time. The win was Drexel's sixth straight and keeps the Dragons in first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 9-2 record. Following a pair of free throws by Taysha Pye, who led the Tribe with 18 points, Drexel trailed by five points with just 1:37 left in overtime. Tyler Hale threaded a bounce pass to a cutting Marginean for a layup and a foul with 1:22 left. Marginean converted the three-point play to make it a 74-72 game. After a missed jumper by Pye, Marginean found room in the lane for a pull-up jumper that knotted the game at 74 points apiece. The Dragons came up with another defensive stop on a driving layup attempt by Pye, and took possession of the ball with 32 seconds left on the clock. The Dragons set up a play for Marginean. But due to the Tribe’s defense, the ball, instead, ended up in the hands of Crane. The rookie sunk a pull-up jumper with 2 seconds left to win the game. 2008-09 Drexel Women’ s Basketball CornishBrookeBrooke
