Since that time eight Huskies have won a combined 17 gold medals at the Olympic Games, including Sue Bird (2016, 2012, 2008, 2004), Swin Cash (2012, 2004), Tina Charles (2016, 2012), Asjha Jones (2012), Maya Moore (2016, 2012), Breanna Stewart (2016), Diana Taurasi (2016, 2012, 2008, 2004) and Kara Wolters (2000). Nine UConn athletes also have represented USA Basketball at FIBA World Cups, including Bird, who owns more World Cup hardware than anyone in history with her four gold medals (2002, 2006, 2010, 2018) and one bronze medal (2010). Also claiming gold medals at the World Cup are Cash (2010), Charles (2010, 2014, 2018), Jones (2010), Moore (2010, 2014), Taurasi (2010, 2014, 2018), Stewart (2014, 2018), Morgan Tuck (2018) and Wolters (1998). Taurasi also was a member of the 2006 USA squad that returned with a bronze medal, and Wolters was on the ‘94 squad that took the bronze. 2009-16 USA National Team head coach Geno Auriemma first coached for USA Basketball in 1993. Among his numerous coaching stints with the red, white and blue was as an assistant coach for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team that won gold in Sydney. More recently, Auriemma piloted the 2010 and 2014 USA World Cup and 2012 and 2016 U.S. Olympic teams to gold medals. In addition to its nine Olympic gold medalists and eight World Cup gold medalists, UConn’s all-time roster is filled with numerous USA Basketball Junior National Team gold medalists, including recent graduates Moriah Jefferson, Stewart and Tuck, who won a combined 11 gold medals and two silver medals while competing on various USA Basketball junior teams. After playing on numerous USA junior squads, 2019 UConn grads Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson earned spots on the 2017-20 USA National Team while still in college. This past fall the duo helped the USA collect the gold medal at the FIBA AmeriCup in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Collier returned in November to help the sqaud to a 6-1 record against college teams and Argentina, Brazil and Colombia’s national teams at the FIBA Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Not only is UConn prevalent among USA athlete rosters, three former Huskies have joined the USA Basketball coaching ranks. Carla Berube served as a head coach for the 2018 USA U17 World Cup Team that captured the gold medal after also claiming gold at the 2017 U16 FIBA Americas Championship. Jamelle Elliott twice has served as a court coach, both at the 2016 Olympics and the 2017 USA U23 National Team training camp, while Jennifer Rizzotti has been a head and assistant coach for numerous USA teams, most recently as an assistant coach for the 2018 USA World Cup Team that captured gold in Spain.

In men's basketball, coaches will lose the built-in recruiting tool of playing near home during conference play and then at Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tournament. But what about the rest of the sports? Here's a look at the potential Missouri Pittsburgh Syracuse Nebraska Ohio State Northwestern Minnesota Michigan St. Wisconsin Purdue State Penn Michigan Iowa Indiana Illinois future of the non-revenue sports at Rutgers if it joins the Big Ten: BASEBALL Now: Under longtime head coach Fred Hill Sr., the Scarlet Knights made the Rutgers NCAA Tournament four times last decade. The Big East Conference’s national clout was hurt by the defection of Miami in 2004. The last conference team to make the College World Series was Louisville in 2007. After: Rutgers could emerge as the class of the conference. You find the best baseball either down South or out West. The power conferences are the ACC, Pac-10 and SEC. A Big Ten team has not made the CWS since Michigan in 1984. MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Now: At the Big East championships in October, Rutgers finished 12th out of 14 teams. Syracuse won the Big East title and finished 14th at nationals. Four other Big East schools made the Top 25. After: The conferences are similar. Wisconsin won the conference title and took seventh at nationals. Two other schools made the Top 25. MEN’S GOLF Now: The Scarlet Knights have made the NCAA Tournament twice since 1983.
