NUI MAYNOOTH MILITARY AVIATION in IRELAND 1921- 1945 By
L.O. 4-1 ^4- NUI MAYNOOTH QllftMll II hiJfiifin Ui Mu*« MILITARY AVIATION IN IRELAND 1921- 1945 By MICHAEL O’MALLEY THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH Supervisor of Research: Dr. Ian Speller JANUARY 2007 IRISH MILITARY AVIATION 1921 - 1945 This thesis initially sets out to examine the context of the purchase of two aircraft, on the authority of Michael Collins and funded by the second Dail, during the Treaty negotiations of 1921. The subsequent development of civil aviation policy including the regulation of civil aviation, the management of a civil aerodrome and the possible start of a state sponsored civil air service to Britain or elsewhere is also explained. Michael Collins’ leading role in the establishment of a small Military Air Service in 1922 and the role of that service in the early weeks of the Civil War are examined in detail. The modest expansion in the resources and role of the Air Service following Collins’ death is examined in the context of antipathy toward the ex-RAF pilots and the general indifference of the new Army leadership to military aviation. The survival of military aviation - the Army Air Corps - will be examined in the context of the parsimony of Finance, and the administrative traumas of demobilisation, the Anny mutiny and reorganisation processes of 1923/24. The manner in which the Army leadership exercised command over, and directed aviation policy and professional standards affecting career pilots is examined in the contexts of the contrasting preparations for war of the Army and the Government. -

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished the Preservation and Destruction of the Christ Church Cathedral Deeds Stuart Kinsella
Archive Fever, no. 10 (December 2019) No Good Deed Goes Unpunished The Preservation and Destruction of the Christ Church Cathedral Deeds Stuart Kinsella ‘Many charters were left scarcely legible, and particularly a foundation charter of King Henry II … could not by any means be read; the prior applied to the Barons of the Exchequer to enroll such of their deeds as were not wholly destroyed, and leave was accordingly given’ Image: Portrait of Michael Joseph McEnery, M.R.I.A., as printed in the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Sixth Series, 14, no. 1 (1924): frontispiece. Beyond 2022 Archive Fever no. 10 (December, 2019) 1 | Page Archive Fever, no. 10 (December 2019) The Christ Church deeds were the oldest collection of material in the Public Record Office of Ireland. During the restoration of Christ Church in the 1870s, the cathedral authorities felt it wise to deposit the cathedral’s vast collection of medieval and early modern materials for safe keeping in the newly minted Public Record Office of Ireland, established in 1867, unaware, of course, that the materials would survive unscathed for only four decades.1 To the immense relief of posterity, a then junior civil servant in the office of the deputy keeper, was assigned to produce a calendar of the cathedral records, summarising them into English mostly from Latin and a few from French. Michael J. McEnery was his name, who began work in 1883, and was almost complete by 1884. He published them as appendices to the reports of the deputy keeper in 1888, 1891, 1892, with an index in 1895 up to the year 1602. -

THE CAMISARD UPRISING of the FRENCH PROTESTANTS. The
THE CAMISARD UPRISING OF THE FRENCH PROTESTANTS. BY REV. PROF. HENRY MARTYN BAIRD, D.D., LL.D., University of the City of New York. The movement known as the War of the Camisards is an episode of the history of Protestantism in France which, though rarely studied in detail and perhaps but partially understood, was not devoid of significance.1 1 On the Camisard uprising see Louvreleuil, " Le Fanatisme renouvelle, ou Histoire des Sacrileges, des incendies . que les Calvinistes revoltez ont commis dans les Sevenes " (Avignon, 1704, 3 vols.). Concluded in a fourth volume under the title " L'Obstination confondue" (Avignon, 1706). Brueys, "Histoire du Fanatisme de notre terns" (3d edition, Utrecht, 1737, 3 vols.). Cavalier, " Memoirs of the Wars of the Cevennes " (2d edition, London, 1727). Though ostensibly written by Cavalier himself, the true author is said to be Pierre Henri Galli, who gives the results of conversations with the Camisard chief, but with such frequent errors as to diminish greatly the value of the narrative. The anonymous " Histoire des Camisards" (London, 1754) is inaccurate and rarely deserving of confidence. The pastoral letters of Bishop Fle'chier in the 5th volume of his " CEuvres completes " (Paris, 1828), and his correspondence in the 10th volume are of great interest. Antoine Court, '' Histoire des troubles des Cevennes ou de la guerre des Camisards, sous le regne de Louis XIV." (Villefranche, 1760, and Alais, 1S19, 3 vols.). By far the most faithful and complete history of the entire war. Although Court was a child at the time of the events described^ and is compelled to make use of the narratives of Louvreleuil, Brueys, etc., he had great familiarity with the region of the Cevennes, where he labored as a minister from 1715 onwards.
