Israel at 70 Israel as a Double Gift Dr. Ari Berman, President, Yeshiva University Our generation is blessed to witness the 70th birthday of the modern State of Israel. While the State of Israel is of profound importance to Jews everywhere, it holds unique resonance for us as religious Zionists, for it potentially signals the coming of a long-hoped-for redemption. Consequently, as we reflect upon the seven decades since Israel’s birth, it is useful to clarify the way in which a modern nation-state like Israel can herald redemption. Of the many foundational ideas that Biblical Israel has contributed to the history of civilization, perhaps the most ambitious is the concept of a collective redemption—the notion that not only should individuals strive for their ultimate betterment, but that society can and must move history forward together. Reflections on this theme are most concentrated in the Bible’s prophetic literature. Broadly speaking, one finds therein two contrasting models for what redemption entails, the first represented in the book of Ezekiel, the second in the book of Isaiah. Ezekiel, in chapter 37, envisions redemption as a project fundamentally benefitting the Jewish people. Although dispersed throughout the world, and oppressed throughout history, this paradigmatic minority will one day be revived. The climax of Ezekiel’s best known eschatological prophecy—his vision of the valley of the dry bones—is God’s promise to His people: “I will bring you back to the land of Israel” (37:12). For Ezekiel, the goal of the redemptive process is internally oriented. Isaiah, by contrast, consistently articulates a redemptive vision that encompasses all of humanity. -

Zimmerman o Aviad Stollman Abstract: A Lifetime Companion to the Laws of Jewish Family Life by Deena R. e Zimmerman is an excellent book for English readers wishing to study the laws of niddah in a serious manner. It enables one to learn the halakhot from the original sources placing them in a comprehensible framework. The A Forum of Modern M companion is well structured and written in a clear and empathetic style. It discusses practical medical issues typically not discussed in popular manuals. While the book is a great contribution to the field of family purity laws (hilkhot niddah)—specifically to the genre of theoretical books teaching the basic issues involved with keeping these laws—it suffers from the tendency, seen in many other such manuals, to direct the reader to a rabbi rather than resolving issues directly. Biography: Rabbi Dr. Aviad A. Stollman is the Rabbi of Congregation Zemer ha-Zait in Efrat, Israel and teaches at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. Opening the Torah to Women: The Transformation of Tradition Women are a people by themselves -Talmud: Shabbat 62a Traditional Judaism believes that both men and women have differentiated and distinct roles delegated through the Torah. A man’s role is focused on positive time-bound mitzvot (commandments), which include but are not limited to, daily praying, wrapping tefillin and putting on a tallit; whereas a women’s role and mitzvot are not time bound and include lighting Shabbat candles, separating a piece of challah for G-d on Shabbat, and the laws of Niddah (menstruation purity). 1 Orthodox Judaism views the separate roles of men and women as a valued and crucial aspect of Jewish life and law, whereas Jewish feminism and more reform branches of Judaism believe these distinctions between men and women are representative of sexual discrimination and unequal opportunity in Judaism. The creation of the Reform and Conservative movement in the late 1800s paved the way for the rise of the Jewish feminist movement in the 1970s, which re-evaluated the classical Jewish texts and halakha (Jewish law) in relation to the role of women in Judaism. Due to Judaism’s ability to evolve and change throughout time, women associated with different Jewish denominations have been able to create their own place within Judaism while also maintaining the traditional aspects of Judaism in order to find a place which connects them most to their religiosity and femininity as modern Jewish women. In Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), there is a teaching that states that when each soul is created it contains both a female and male soul. -

As we see in the vision of Jacob's Ladder at thebeginning of Parashat VaYeitzi, is it a life devoted solely to Heaven, or is therea way to bridgeHeaven and Earth? There is no doubt that in contemplating Avodat Hashem,how best to serve God, the Chareidi “Torah only” approach has greatallure. To spend all day studying God’s word, through Torah learning,connecting to God, through Tefillah, and communing with God on Shabbat andHolidays, through a sweet mix of Torah, Tefillah and Zemirot can be intoxicating. This lifestyle had great appeal to me at an important crossroads in mylife. But as I continued to contemplate my path forward, I thought a lotabout my past as well. I come from generations and generations ofChassidic Rabbis. My grandfather sat at his father’s Tisch, as the son ofthe Rebbe, in Wengrow. Yet, through the hand of God, which saved my grandfather,sending him to Scotland, then England and, finally, settling in Chicago – wewere no longer Chassidic – we were Modern and Orthodox and that is how I was raised. In some cosmic way, I felt (and continue to feel) that it was God’s will that Iwas raised in the way that I was here and I wasn’t meant to transport myselfback to the way it was in Europe.
