J.L., New York This culture clash may not allow you to reconcile the values you esteem. Though the agent dealt you only a petty slight, without ill intent, you're entitled to work with someone who will treat you with the dignity and respect he shows his male clients. If this involved only his own person -- adherence to laws concerning diet or dress, for example -- you should of course be tolerant. But his actions directly affect you. And sexism is sexism, even when motivated by religious convictions. -

Clopper Professor Donald Winford c Rachel Steindel Burdin, 2016 Abstract Intonation has long been noted as a salient feature of American Jewish English speech (Weinreich, 1956); however, there has not been much systematic study of how, exactly Jewish English intonation is distinct, and to what extent Yiddish has played a role in this distinctness. This dissertation examines the impact of Yiddish on Jewish English intonation in the Jewish community of Dayton, Ohio, and how features of Yiddish intonation are used in Jewish English. 20 participants were interviewed for a production study. The participants were balanced for gender, age, religion (Jewish or not), and language background (whether or not they spoke Yiddish in addition to English). In addition, recordings were made of a local Yiddish club. The production study revealed differences in both the form and function in Jewish English, and that Yiddish was the likely source for that difference. The Yiddish-speaking participants were found to both have distinctive productions of rise-falls, including higher peaks, and a wider pitch range, in their Yiddish, as well as in their English produced during the Yiddish club meetings. The younger Jewish English participants also showed a wider pitch range in some situations during the interviews. -

Conflict and Creativity in Jewish Modern Orthodox Girls’ Education: Navigating Tradition and Modernity by Rafael Mark Cashman A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Rafael Mark Cashman (2015) Conflict and Creativity in Jewish Modern Orthodox Girls’ Education: Navigating Tradition and Modernity Rafael Mark Cashman Doctor of Philosophy Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This study investigates Jewish Modern Orthodox girls’ dissonant, creative and adaptive responses to their religious and gender identities as they negotiate the tensions between authority and autonomy in an all-girls’ high school. It considers how the school, as a socializing agent, plays a role in this development. This study is framed by a post-structural research agenda that explores the complexity of religious practices in modernity, and a feminist post- structural body of research around alternative girlhoods in modernity. This ethnographic study contends with the notion that the presence of autonomy and other modern values such as egalitarianism, are a necessary challenge to the girls’ capacity to accept religious and patriarchal authority in a self-affirming way. Instead, it found that girls accept or creatively adapt to, and rarely dissent from, aspects of religion’s authority, while still maintaining their expectation of autonomy and egalitarianism. They achieved this state through a complex and creative re-structuring of normative religious categories in their religious lives, rather than through a bifurcation of the competing discourses, as had been posited in previous research. -

Zimmerman o Aviad Stollman Abstract: A Lifetime Companion to the Laws of Jewish Family Life by Deena R. e Zimmerman is an excellent book for English readers wishing to study the laws of niddah in a serious manner. It enables one to learn the halakhot from the original sources placing them in a comprehensible framework. The A Forum of Modern M companion is well structured and written in a clear and empathetic style. It discusses practical medical issues typically not discussed in popular manuals. While the book is a great contribution to the field of family purity laws (hilkhot niddah)—specifically to the genre of theoretical books teaching the basic issues involved with keeping these laws—it suffers from the tendency, seen in many other such manuals, to direct the reader to a rabbi rather than resolving issues directly. Biography: Rabbi Dr. Aviad A. Stollman is the Rabbi of Congregation Zemer ha-Zait in Efrat, Israel and teaches at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. Thought Control written by Ozer Bergman | April 4, 2021 It’s all in the mind. “Where do our thoughts come from?” is a question I was recently asked. The short answer is that there are two “reservoirs” (as I like to call them) of thought. One reservoir contains holy thoughts: how to imitate God by being patient, forgiving and doing kindness; how to be more sincere in one’s devotions—for example, davening (prayer) and Torah study; how to raise one’s standard of behavior and thought in relation to money, food and morality. The other reservoir contains thoughts contrary to the above, as well as thoughts that encourage the pursuit and enjoyment of sacrilegious attitudes and behaviors. The reservoir from which one receives depends on how good a person one is. If you’re good in ways a tzaddik would be good, you receive from the first reservoir. Bad guys, evilniks and people indifferent to matters of the neshamah (soul) get their thoughts from Reservoir #2. (This answer is based on the second half of Rebbe Nachman’s Wisdom #5.) Like most short answers and other incomplete pictures, this one leaves out a lot and, as a result, can be misleading. Even though it tells us that we can help determine our thoughts by our positive behaviors and desire to be good, it leaves out a critical piece of information—namely, that we can actually choose what we want to think and what we think. A person’s arm doesn’t fly around haphazardly. He chooses when to lift it, when to lower it, when to touch something gently and when violently.
