Sharing an interest in subcultural groups and individuals on the margins of society, each artist candidly portrays bohemian life of the 1970s and early 1980s. Their intimate depictions of people, places and events provide glimpses of semi- private worlds, amplifying the emotional tenor of the times. An extensive display of Jerrems’ photographs includes Vale Street (1975), her iconic photograph of local teenagers; portraits taken for the landmark feminist publication A Book About Australian Women (1974); a suite of prints documenting life on campus at Macquarie University, Sydney; and a series she took in hospital while she was dying from a rare illness, including frank self- portraits. -

International Journal of Innovation, Creativity and Change. www.ijicc.net Volume 9, Issue 2, 2019 Tennessee Williams and the Representation of Animal Images Muslim Mohda*, Lehmood Al-Mamourib, a,bAl-Mustaqbal University College Hilla ,Babylon , Iraq, Email: a*[email protected] Since Aristophanes, playwrights have cast animals in roles where they represent human behaviour. These playwrights have chosen one or more animals to pinpoint behavioural tendencies of their characters. Ben Jonson (Volpone), Anton Chekhov (The Seagull), Henrik Ibsen (The Wild Duck) and Eugene Ionesco (The Rhinoceros) are such playwrights who use animal imagery to depict, and comment on, human behaviour. This paper does not deal with animal imagery as it is generally understood in similes and metaphors; in dialogue and descriptions. Instead, this paper deals with animals and their images as metaphors of characters in respective plays. Tennessee Williams was one playwright who employed animals as motifs. He never tired of experimenting with the idea that animals, properly selected and harnessed, could best capture the mental state of his protagonists. This paper is concerned with the "why" and "how" of his powerful fascination. Key words: Animal imagery, conflict, metaphor. Introduction In his personal life, Williams was a fond lover of animals and always had a pet in his house. Attention to this aspect of his personal life was drawn by an apparently trite reference in Richard F. Leavitt's The World of Tennessee Williams, a book prepared from material, both pictorial and biographical, supplied by the playwright himself. It is therefore regrettable that his biographers and critics have generally ignored this - shall we call it the animal side - of his personality. -

"Australia’s most evil and repugnant nightspot" The FOCO Club... Personal Recollections by Frank Neilsen, edited by Peter Gray In the 1960s, the restless first wave of "baby-boomers" were just learning to spread their adult wings; to be able to vote, and, importantly for some, to drink in Queensland pubs. I was a 1946-model "boomer" from an average family, and had been brought up with the parental admonition to "never discuss religion, politics or money". Of course, sex should have been on the taboo list, but that particular word was never mentioned. In 1964, I was privileged to start working as photographic assistant to Geoff Dauth at his Petrie Bight studio. Geoff was undoubtedly Brisbane's leading photographer, a world-class creative talent, an interesting bohemian character, and a great friend. It can not be overstated how repressively conservative the status quo was in Brisbane during the 1960s. From many of the younger generation's point of view, Brisbane was a mind-numbing, cultural desert. Yet, despite everything, oases began to appear. I fell into the habit of frequenting the hippest place in Brisbane, the Primitif Café, owned by Geoff's friend Peter Hackworth; in the basement of Queen Street's Piccadilly Arcade. It was here I met Larry Zetlin, who was then a student at the University of Queensland (UQ). In an era when the drinking age was 21, there were few places, apart from the ubiquitous milk bar, where young people could gather to listen to interesting music, enjoy a bite to eat, and simply 'hang out'. -
1 Curating Photography in Australia Dr Daniel
Curating Photography in Australia Dr Daniel Palmer (Monash University) & Dr Martyn Jolly (ANU) This paper derives from some early research into the various forces currently influencing photography curating in Australian art galleries. We are especially interested in new technologies such as the internet, but more generally the protean nature of the medium itself. Naturally, to better understand the present, we start with a few glimpses of the past. The Pre-History Although the institutional collecting and curating of photography didn’t begin in earnest until the 1970s, in the five or so decades before then the powerful idea of collecting photographs was intermittently discussed, at various levels of institutional authority, with various degrees of vigour. At the end of the First World War, the amateur photographic magazine the Australasian Photo Review called for a ‘national collection of Australian photographic records’. The Mitchell Library was one of several who responded positively to this idea, even suggesting a list of twelve different categories of photographs which amateurs could take for a future repository. However the librarians didn’t follow through on their initial positive noises and collections failed to materialise. Thirty years later, at the end of the Second World War, the idea of a national collection was raised again. Contemporary Photography devoted an entire issue to the new sharp bromide enlargements Harold Cazneaux had made of his Pictorialist negatives of Old Sydney, and declared that they ‘would be a valuable acquisition for the Mitchell Library or Australian Historical Societies.’ However, once more the library failed to follow through, and Cazneaux’s photographs remained uncollected.
