Juanita Hall
Debra DeBerry Clerk of Superior Court DeKalb County Juanita Hall November 6, 1901 – February 28, 1968 First African-American Tony Award Winner Juanita (Long) Hall was born on November 6, 1901, in Keyport, New Jersey to an African-American father, Abram Long, a farm laborer and an Irish-American mother, Mary Richardson. Juanita’s mother died when she was an infant and she was raised primarily by her grandmother, who encouraged her interest in music. As a child, Juanita sang in the church choir and became fascinated with the old Negro spirituals she heard at revival meetings. Juanita knew then that she would pursue a career as a singer. At the age of 14, Juanita began teaching Singing at Lincoln House in East Orange, NJ. A few years later, she married actor Clement Hall, however the marriage didn’t last long and they had no children. Clement Hall died in the 1920’s. Juanita went on to attend New York’s Julliard School of Music and studied Orchestra- tion, Harmony, Music Theory and Voice. While teaching music, Juanita had small stage roles and worked with the Hall Johnson Choir, becoming a soloist and serving as assistant director until she formed her own choral group, The Juanita Hall Choir, in 1936. Her choir operated for five years and gave more than 5,000 performances, including radio appearances three times a week. Her choir also performed at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City. Juanita performed in several stage productions, but her breakthrough in musical theater came when she appeared in an annual talent show called ”Talent 48.” There, the songwriting team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who were in the process of writing the play, South Pacific, heard Juanita sing. -

Black Women's Music Database
By Stephanie Y. Evans & Stephanie Shonekan Black Women’s Music Database chronicles over 600 Africana singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians from around the world. The database was created by Dr. Stephanie Evans, a professor of Black women’s studies (intellectual history) and developed in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Shonekon, a professor of Black studies and music (ethnomusicology). Together, with support from top music scholars, the Stephanies established this project to encourage interdisciplinary research, expand creative production, facilitate community building and, most importantly, to recognize and support Black women’s creative genius. This database will be useful for music scholars and ethnomusicologists, music historians, and contemporary performers, as well as general audiences and music therapists. Music heals. The purpose of the Black Women’s Music Database research collective is to amplify voices of singers, musicians, and scholars by encouraging public appreciation, study, practice, performance, and publication, that centers Black women’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives. This project maps leading Black women artists in multiple genres of music, including gospel, blues, classical, jazz, R & B, soul, opera, theater, rock-n-roll, disco, hip hop, salsa, Afro- beat, bossa nova, soka, and more. Study of African American music is now well established. Beginning with publications like The Music of Black Americans by Eileen Southern (1971) and African American Music by Mellonee Burnim and Portia Maultsby (2006), -
Asian American Romantic Comedies and Sociopolitical Influences
FROM PRINT TO SCREEN: ASIAN AMERICAN ROMANTIC COMEDIES AND SOCIOPOLITICAL INFLUENCES Karena S. Yu TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 2019 ______________________________ Madhavi Mallapragada, Ph.D. Department of Radio-Television-Film Supervising Professor ______________________________ Chiu-Mi Lai, Ph.D. Department of Asian Studies Second Reader Abstract Author: Karena S. Yu Title: From Print to Screen: Asian American Romantic Comedies and Sociopolitical Influences Supervisor: Madhavi Mallapragada, Ph.D. In this thesis, I examine how sociopolitical contexts and production cultures have affected how original Asian American narrative texts have been adapted into mainstream romantic comedies. I begin by defining several terms used throughout my thesis: race, ethnicity, Asian American, and humor/comedy. Then, I give a history of Asian American media portrayals, as these earlier images have profoundly affected the ways in which Asian Americans are seen in media today. Finally, I compare the adaptation of humor in two case studies, Flower Drum Song (1961) which was created by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Crazy Rich Asians (2018) which was directed by Jon M. Chu. From this analysis, I argue that both seek to undercut the perpetual foreigner myth, but the difference in sociocultural incentives and control of production have resulted in more nuanced portrayals of some Asian Americans in the latter case. However, its tendency to push towards the mainstream has limited its ability to challenge stereotyped representations, and it continues to privilege an Americentric perspective. 2 Acknowledgements I owe this thesis to the support and love of many people. To Dr. Mallapragada, thank you for helping me shape my topic through both your class and our meetings. -
