396 Agrarian Metaphors 397 The Bible provided homilists with a rich store of "agricultural" metaphors and symbols) The loci classici are passages like Isaiah's "Song of the Vineyard" (Is. 5:1-7), Ezekiel's allegories of the Tree (Ez. 15,17,19:10-14,31) and christ's parables of the Sower (Matt. 13: 3-23, Mark 4:3-20, Luke 8:5-15) ,2 the Good Seed (Matt. 13:24-30, Mark 4:26-29) , the Barren Fig-tree (Luke 13:6-9) , the Labourers in the Vineyard (Matt. 21:33-44, Mark 12:1-11, Luke 20:9-18), and the Mustard Seed (Matt. 13:31-32, Mark 4:30-32, Luke 13:18-19). Commonplace in Scripture, however, are comparisons of God to a gardener or farmer,5 6 of man to a plant or tree, of his soul to a garden, 7and of his works to "fruits of the spirit". 8 Man is called the "husbandry" of God (1 Cor. 3:6-9), and the final doom which awaits him is depicted as a harvest in which the wheat of the blessed will be gathered into God's storehouse and the chaff of the damned cast into eternal fire. Medieval scriptural commentaries and spiritual handbooks helped to standardize the interpretation of such figures and to impress them on the memories of preachers (and their congregations). Early Theatre 12.2 (2009) SHeetal LodHia ‘The house is hers, the soul is but a tenant’: Material Self- Fashioning and Revenge Tragedy In Thomas Middleton’s The Maiden’s Tragedy, the Lady, object of interest for Govianus and the Tyrant, appears on stage as a ghost together with her corpse.1 Indeed, the Lady appears twice with her corpse. She first appears as a ghost dressed in her virginal burial garb with a crucifix, while her corpse has been bedecked in a different elaborate dress and jewels; the stage direc- tions prior to her entrance read, ‘Enter the Ghost of the Lady, as she was / Last seen, standing just before him all in white, stuck with / Jewels, and with a great crucifix on her breast’ (4.5.43). The Lady’s second appearance on stage is even more fraught, since she next appears on stage as a ghost dressed in the very same garb as her corpse: ‘Enter the Ghost of the Lady, dressed in the same form as her body in the chair’ (5.2.143). For many scholars this instance follows a prevailing motif of revenge tragedies, in which ghosts and corpses problema- tize ‘playing dead’.2 Playing dead, however, is not merely a staging issue, though performance of a single character in two simultaneous but separate locations is a legitim- ate concern, both metaphysical and staging, since playing dead also poses eschatological and ontological challenges to neoplatonism, stoicism, and Christian theology, frameworks within which many Jacobean and revenge plays are conceived. Where most readings of ghosts and corpses on stage rely on a Christian, neoplatonic, and stoic notion of the body’s unity with the soul, in which the soul governs the body and the body is a mere vessel for the soul, I argue that The Maiden’s Tragedy, The Revenger’s Tragedy, and The Duchess of Malfi all participate in a larger trend of the early modern period in which the body is progressively evacuated of the spirit. -

Young 2011 All rights reserved NEIGHBORS, PARTNERS, ENEMIES: JEWS AND THE MONASTERIES OF GERMANY IN THE HIGH MIDDLE AGES Abstract by John D. Young German-speaking lands in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries were home to the largest Jewish communities north of the Alps and Pyrenees and thus constituted key locations for Christian-Jewish interaction. This dissertation examines the monasteries of Germany—the primary centers of intellectual and cultural production in the high medieval Empire—as loci for that interaction. It explores both the social/economic and the cultural aspect of contact between monks and Jews. In the process, it challenges traditional interpretations of Christian-Jewish relations and helps to fill in the picture of the lives and activities of monks in this period. The study proceeds in three parts. Part one, comprising the first three chapters, examines the political context wherein Jews and monks interacted before investigating evidence of contact between Jews and monks in the social and economic spheres. This evidence demonstrates that Jewish communities and monasteries occupied similar John D. Young political positions in this society—due to their mutual reliance on the institution of privilege—and that they engaged frequently in business dealings with each other. -

1 ‘Life as the End of Life’: Algernon Charles Swinburne, Walter Pater, and Secular Aesthetics Sara Lyons Submitted for Ph.D. Examination 2 ABSTRACT This thesis elucidates the relationship between the emergence of literary aestheticism and ambiguities in the status and meaning of religious doubt in late Victorian Britain. Aestheticism has often been understood as a branch of a larger, epochal crisis of religious faith: a creed of ‘art-for-art’s-sake’ and a cult of beauty are thought to have emerged to occupy the vacuum created by the departure of God, or at least by the attenuation of traditional forms of belief. However, the model of secularisation implicit in this account is now often challenged by historians, sociologists, and literary critics, and it fails to capture what was at stake in Swinburne and Pater’s efforts to reconceptualise aesthetic experience. I suggest affinities between their shared insistence that art be understood as an independent, disinterested realm, a creed beyond creeds, and secularisation understood as the emptying of religion from political and social spheres. Secondly, I analyse how Swinburne and Pater use the apparently neutral space created by their relegation of religion to imagine the secular in far more radical terms than conventional Victorian models of religious doubt allowed. Their varieties of aestheticism often posit secularism not as a disillusioning effect of modern rationality but as a primordial enchantment with the sensuous and earthly, prior to a ‘fall’ into religious transcendence. I explore their tendency to identify this ideal of the secular with aesthetic value, as well as the paradoxes produced by their efforts to efface the distinctions between the religious and the aesthetic. -
