Age-old conserva- tive beliefs were still alive and had a temporary resurgence un- der the Puritan hegemony, but liberal forces were also at work* The poet had the misfortune to be involved in a partic- ularly unhappy marriage. After a youth spent largely in study, with little contact with young women, he hastily married an im- mature Royalist bride, Mary Powell. Her refusal to return to Milton after she had left him in the early months of the mar- riage to visit her family suggests that Hilton and Mary Powell were incompatible from the start. Though there was a reconcil- iation later, Hilton's relationship with her, her whole -family, and, after her death, her children as well, was replete with friction and bitterness. -
Milton and the Early Modern Culture of Devotion: Bodies at Prayer
reviews 121 Levellers’ writings and to examine them and Milton’s together, and of Williams’s capacity and integrity in making the attempt. I’m wary of reviewers’ frequent tendency to ask for a book different from the one an author undertook to write. Still, I did find Williams’s final two chapters, on Paradise Regained, especially with their (worthwhile) emphasis on Foxe’s “Book of Martyrs,” an awkward fit for the rest of this already very long volume. And its length is indeed an issue for any reader wishing to grasp the work’s thesis in a focused manner. I mentioned earlier the book’s main genre: that of documentary and historical presentation of materials that are then argued to be relevant to a reading of Milton. Yet much of this book verges into another valuable but demanding genre: the thematic reception history, most recently and impressively exemplified by John Leonard’s Faithful La- bourers (2013). For me, this aspect of Milton’s Leveller God occasioned something of a trial of patience, and I often felt that reference to the work of others—instead of being tackled repeatedly, sometimes rather severely, in the body of Williams’s text—could have been compacted and deposited decorously in his notes. Early Theatre 12.2 (2009) SHeetal LodHia ‘The house is hers, the soul is but a tenant’: Material Self- Fashioning and Revenge Tragedy In Thomas Middleton’s The Maiden’s Tragedy, the Lady, object of interest for Govianus and the Tyrant, appears on stage as a ghost together with her corpse.1 Indeed, the Lady appears twice with her corpse. She first appears as a ghost dressed in her virginal burial garb with a crucifix, while her corpse has been bedecked in a different elaborate dress and jewels; the stage direc- tions prior to her entrance read, ‘Enter the Ghost of the Lady, as she was / Last seen, standing just before him all in white, stuck with / Jewels, and with a great crucifix on her breast’ (4.5.43). The Lady’s second appearance on stage is even more fraught, since she next appears on stage as a ghost dressed in the very same garb as her corpse: ‘Enter the Ghost of the Lady, dressed in the same form as her body in the chair’ (5.2.143). For many scholars this instance follows a prevailing motif of revenge tragedies, in which ghosts and corpses problema- tize ‘playing dead’.2 Playing dead, however, is not merely a staging issue, though performance of a single character in two simultaneous but separate locations is a legitim- ate concern, both metaphysical and staging, since playing dead also poses eschatological and ontological challenges to neoplatonism, stoicism, and Christian theology, frameworks within which many Jacobean and revenge plays are conceived. Where most readings of ghosts and corpses on stage rely on a Christian, neoplatonic, and stoic notion of the body’s unity with the soul, in which the soul governs the body and the body is a mere vessel for the soul, I argue that The Maiden’s Tragedy, The Revenger’s Tragedy, and The Duchess of Malfi all participate in a larger trend of the early modern period in which the body is progressively evacuated of the spirit. -

Though later in life the poet will celebrate conjugal love in Book IV of Paradise Lost (1667) and in Sonnet XXIII Methought I saw my late espousèd saint (1673), in 1645 Milton proffers his lyric of erotic desire in the Italian language alone. His choice is both unusual and entirely fitting. How did Milton, born in Cheapside, acquire Italian at such an elevated level of proficiency? When did he write these poems and where? Is the woman about whom he speaks an historical person or is she merely the poetic trope demanded by the genre? Though relatively few critics have addressed the style of Milton’s Italian verse, an astonishing range of views has nonetheless emerged from their assessments. -
