What a great Convention we had! A good effort by lan Fuller and the Committee for the hard work they put into it's organisation. Of course, without the speakers and the hotel, it wouldn't have been a Convention so well done everyone concerned. lt was a new venture for the CSG to use a hotel and it looks as though it was the right decision. However, we don't stand still and lan already has the 2006 Convention well in his sights.

Evidence for this is clear from the fact that Local Government used parts of it, especially the “Water Quality criteria” as a basis for their “Standard Licence Conditions” document first published in 1992. The Water Quality survived rigorous appraisal and reappeared in the revised document published in 1998. Since the adoption of the Code of Conduct OATA has issued a number of recommendations and other documents relevant to fish welfare and other aspects of the industry.

AACL BIOFLUX Aquaculture, Aquarium, Conservation & Legislation International Journal of the Bioflux Society Some considerations concerning the artificially colored aquarium fish trade 1Valentin O. Eşanu, 2Claudiu Gavriloaie, 3Ioan G. Oroian, 1,4Philippe Burny 1 University of Liege, Agro-Bio Tech Gembloux, Belgium; 2 SC Bioflux SRL, Cluj-Napoca, Romania; 3 University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (USAMV), Faculty of Agriculture, Cluj-Napoca, Romania; 4 Walloon Center for Agricultural Research, Belgium. Corresponding author: V. O. Eşanu, [email protected] Abstract. Humans kept ornamental fish in their homes from ancient times. During time, the ornamental fish industry became a profitable enterprise. Color, size and shape are important traits when we describe a fish as a phenotypically uniform line, strain or breed; a standardized color, shape and size describe better a fish population and thus it is promoted better on the market. Several varieties of fish are being artificially colored to improve marketability. Painted, dyed or tattooed fish are terms for a new variety of pet fish whose scales have been transformed from monochrome silver into vivid pigmentations using artificial colors or lasers. These practices produce many health problems for fish. We should not to put money above the life and welfare of any living thing. Education of the customers is a very important thing, because artificially colored fish continue to exist because of demand. Key Words: tattooed fish, dyed fish, petshop, aquarium fish. Introduction. The creations of nature have long been kept captive in human care, in simulated environments; concerning the fish, humans were interested in keeping ornamental fish in their homes from ancient times (Kaszony 1970).

Both Government of India and Government of Kerala have initiated several steps to popularize ornamental fisheries. The biennial India International Aqua Show (IIAS) is one such initiative that offers a unique platform for all the stakeholders to showcase their products to the leading fish importers/exporters across the world and to facilitate business tie-ups. I am confident that IIAS 2014 and Ornamentals Kerala will act as a catalyst for the development of ornamental fishery as a commercial and export oriented enterprise.

  • MAN-MADE FISH: DOMESTICATED FISHES and THEIR PLACE in the AQUATIC TRADE and HOBBY Svein A
OFI Journal, issue 44 (February 2004): pp. 1, 3-4, 6-10, 12-16 MAN-MADE FISH: DOMESTICATED FISHES AND THEIR PLACE IN THE AQUATIC TRADE AND HOBBY Svein A. Fosså, President, Ornamental Fish International The following text was presented as the Keynote Address at Aquarama 2003, held in Singapore between 30 October and 2 November, 2003. n this presentation, I will discuss the place of domesticated fishes in the aquatic trade and I hobby. For this, we first need to establish what exactly I mean by a domesticated fish. For example, is everything we keep in aquaria domesticated in a sense, or can we narrow it down in any way? The Domesticated Animal Although the word 'domesticated' has the same origin as 'domestic', the domestication of animals is a process involving much more than merely keeping the animals in our homes, or on our farms. For the term 'domestication' to have any practical meaning, me must define it as changing animals so that they differ in some significant way from their wild ancestors, whether those predecessors are still extant or are now extinct. We can define 'domesticated animals' as "animals that have been genetically altered as a direct result of their involvement with us"1. We are talking about animals where man has had control over breeding over a long period of time, so much so that the animals are significantly changed in behaviour and/or appearance2. Domestication is qualitatively Domesticated goldfishes were the very first fishes to be different from the term 'taming'. commonly kept as pet fish in Europe.
