Presentación Emiliana Cruz Este libro se hizo para dialogar, conmemorar, honrar y recordar a Tomás Cruz Lorenzo, mi padre. Nace de la intención de poner a disposición de la nueva generación las ideas de Tomás sobre la autonomía de los pueblos chatinos y sobre la necesidad de decidir su propio destino. De volver a oír el llamado que hace Tomás para reflexionar y analizar cuestiones de dere- chos, comunalidad, salud, inclusión de género, educa- ción y, sobre todo, lengua. Desde la muerte de Tomás en 1989 hay conversaciones pendientes, heridas que cerrar. Con el asesinato, hubo los que perdieron un amigo, un padre, un esposo. Aunque el asesinato de Tomás fue un duro golpe que nos hizo sentirnos perdidos, a través de sus enseñanzas en vida pudimos retomar el rumbo y avanzar. Para aquellos que no lo conocieron, Tomás dejó suficiente material escrito para que sigamos conversando con él y es así como queremos celebrar su lucha y sabiduría. Ante esta necesidad de cerrar heridas y de abrir nuevas conversaciones, se hizo un llamado a varios conocidos, amigos y familiares de Tomás para que participaran con un recuerdo sobre él. Además, junté los escritos de Tomás de la revista El Medio 12 Presentación Milenio y del periódico el Imparcial de Oaxaca1 y convoqué a algunos jóvenes chatinos que quisie- ran participar en el proyecto leyendo los escritos de Tomás y reflexionando con ellos. El primer ejercicio con los jóvenes fue de lectura: cada mes se les envió un artículo de El Medio Milenio. En la segunda fase, al terminar de leer todos los artículos, cada partici- pante escogió uno y escribió una reflexión al respec- to, en su propio estilo y según sus intereses. Son éstas las reflexiones que se incluyen en el libro, entreteji- das con los artículos de Tomás que les dieron pie.

Woodbury University of Texas at Austin We give a narrative description of our ten-year path into the elaborate tonal systems of the Chatino languages (Otomanguean; Oaxaca, Mexico), and of some of the methods we have used and recommend, illustrated with specific examples. The work, ongoing at the time of writing, began when one of us (Cruz), a native speaker of San Juan Quiahije Chatino, entered the University of Texas at Austin as a Ph.D. student and formed, together with the other of us (Woodbury), a professor there, the Chatino Language Documentation Project, ultimately incorporating five other Ph.D. students and two other senior researchers. We argue for the importance of an interplay among speaker and non-speaker perspectives over the long course of work; a mix of introspection, hypothesis-testing, natural speech record- ing, transcription, translation, grammatical analysis, and dictionary-making as research methods and activities; an emphasis on community training as an active research context; the simultaneous study of many varieties within a close-knit language family to leverage progress; and the use of historical-comparative methods to get to know tonal systems and the roles they play at a deeper level. 0. Long occupying a central position in one of the cradles of human 5 civilization, speakers of Otomanguean languages have played important roles in the region, 6 about which their languages have much to tell. However, Otomanguean is perhaps the least 7 understood of the major Mesoamerican language families, due to its great diversity, the 8 remarkable structural complexity of Otomanguean languages, and the history of the field of 9 Otomanguean historical linguistics, which has seen great achievement alternating with periodic 10 controversy and doubt. Introduction This chapter presents an overview of the properties of spatial representations in languages of the region. The analyses presented here are based on data from 47 languages belonging to ten Deleted: on literature covering language families in addition to literature on language isolates. Overall, these languages are located primarily in Mexico, covering the Mesoamerican Sprachbundi, but also extending north to include languages such as the isolate Seri and several Uto-Aztecan languages, and south to include Sumu-Mayangna, a Misumalpan language of Nicaragua. We focus on the outcomes and benefits of the community-led project in Erakor after initial training, which include: a) long-term documentation of linguistic and cultural practices calibrated towards community’s needs (using the PARADISEC repository for ongoing access), and b) collections of large quantities of data of good phonetic quality, which, besides being readily available for research, have a great potential for training and testing language technologies, such as automatic speech recognition. Woodbury University of Texas at Austin We describe our own experience of linguist-community collaboration over the last ten years in our Chatino Language Documentation Project, focused on the Chatino languages (Otomanguean; Oaxaca, Mexico). We relate episodes in the emergence and evolution of the collaboration between ourselves, and of the collaboration among ourselves and the Chatino communities with which we have worked. Our experience has several special features. First, our own collaboration began as native Chatino-speaking Ph.D. student and her teacher in a program focused on training speakers of Latin American indigenous languages in linguistics and anthropology, and developed into a larger collaboration among students and faculty where the student had a major leadership role. Second, our approach was documentary-descriptive and comparative, but it was also socially engaged or ‘activist,’, in that we sought to promote interest, awareness, and respect for the Chatino languages, to teach and support Chatino literacy, and to preserve and offer access to spoken Chatino, especially traditional verbal art. Our approach had synergies with local interests in writing and in honoring traditional speech ways, but it also led to conflicts over our roles as social actors, and the traditionally activist roles of indigenous teachers. Third, we experienced plasticity in the collaborative roles we played. Between ourselves, we were student and teacher, but also initiator and follower as we became engaged in revitalization.

Translating a coun‑ try’s anthem into an indigenous language raises further questions of semiotic techniques arising from a professed desire to integrate indigenous people into the larger Mexican society and which highlights language ideologies and power dynamics. Here, I describe the translation of the Mexican national anthem into the Chatino language of San Juan Quiahije, Oaxaca, Mexico. The text is pro‑ vided in its entirety along with a comparative textual analysis of the translation. Wood, University of Texas at Austin Abstract This work presents the experiences of an Indigenous researcher carrying out lin- guistic and ethnographic studies within her own community. A growing number of Indigenous peoples are venturing into documentation, description and promotion of their languages of origin. As a field, linguistic documentation and linguistic de- scription were created by and for members of academic institutions that were his- torically distant from collaborative work with the speakers of Indigenous languages. The author’s place within the community, and thus the culture, gives her a profound insight into not only local linguistic research, but also its limitations and difficul- ties. There is a great need for resources and materials that address the complexities of a female native researcher’s experiences in the field. These intricacies concern the paradoxical roles they play, as women, as members of complex intergenerational families, as community members and as members of educational institutions.
