Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption. -

Was sollen wir jetzt eurer Meinung nach machen?« Eine Frau schlägt kurz darauf einen gänzlich anderen Ton an: »Es gibt keine Extraverpackungen für Bands, die noch nicht Gold geholt haben. Ihr solltet euch glücklich schätzen. Jedes andere Majorlabel hätte euch längst fallen lassen.« Der Mann äußert resignierend einen weiteren Satz: »Die Leute von den Radiosendern mögen eure Band einfach nicht.« Etliche Gruppen dürften schlechte Erfahrungen mit großen Plattenfirmen gemacht und ähnliche Sätze gehört haben. Doch nur wenige Bands haben solche Episoden in ihren Songs festgehalten. Und niemandem dürfte es so gut gelungen sein wie den Melvins, die absurde Seite des Musikgeschäfts derart prägnant in einem Stück zusammenzufassen, das nur zwei Minuten dauert. In »Laughing with lucifer at satan’s sideshow« sind die eingangs erwähnten, nachgestellten Anrufe zu hören. Unterlegt sind sie mit einem dadaistisch anmutenden, elektronischen Beat und einem Basslauf. Dazu trommelt jemand auf Bongos herum. Das klingt völlig beknackt und passt bestens zu dem peinlichen Gerede. Die Melvins hatten 1997 allen Grund dazu, auf ihrer Platte »Honky« einen Kommentar zu den gängigen Verfahrensweisen in der Musikwelt abzugeben. 1993 waren sie von der großen Plattenfirma Atlantic unter Vertrag genommen worden. -

Hmmm…I can’t wait to get back. We are now calling this tour “51 States in 51 Days” because we think DC should be a state. Nonetheless, no one is listening to us about that, or much else really. So we drive to Seattle, leave our gear and then fly to Anchorage for the first show of the trip. Weirdly enough we ran into Dylan Carlson and the rest of Earth who were getting ready to fly to New Zealand for their first ever tour down under. They said they had no working papers and just tourist visas. Good luck! I told them about the time New Zealand customs officials ruined two of my guitar cases by tearing all of the lining out of them looking for drugs and when they found none, simply shoved the now useless mess back to me and told me to beat it. The Earth people seemed a bit concerned but marched onto the plane anyway. I’m sure everything will be fine once they get there…. -
