Jurors, judges, Mand forensic psychiatrists are prone to accept the claim that some form of mental incapacity, not religious belief, accounts for “homegrown” jihadist terrorism in North America and Europe. This state of affairs results from the failure by prosecutors to frame acts of jihadist violence as expressions of faith. This failure to prosecute jihadists vigorously stems from several sources: a deep-rooted, Western reluctance to impugn religion; a cult of political correctness; and culturally naive wishful thinking. Viewing jihadists as crazy offers a comfortable conceit that ignores the stark reality that disaffected but sane Muslims are seduced by an ideology that espouses violent hatred of Western civilization. making directions are disseminated widely. • Queer Quarantine: Conceptualizing State and Dominant Cultural Responses to Queer Threats As Discursive Tactics and Technologies of Quarantine
Queer Quarantine: Conceptualizing State and Dominant Cultural Responses to Queer Threats as Discursive Tactics and Technologies of Quarantine by Péter Balogh A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Canadian Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2015 Péter Balogh Abstract This study explores queer quarantine, my conceptualization of processes and practices aimed at assessing, diagnosing and isolating queer threats to the nation. In theorizing queer quarantine, I draw upon the longstanding conflation of queerness with disease and contagion, and build a case for reading the isolation, containment and casting out of queerness as an assemblage of discursive tactics and technologies aimed at quarantining queers beyond conventional understandings of quarantine. I examine the ways queers are imagined to threaten public space, healthy bodies, and the future of the nation, and provide a new accounting for so-called homophobic policies and practices deployed in statecraft and dominant culture. I also trace the emergence of the queer AIDS monster, an effect of disciplinary tactics of queer quarantine and a particular discursive formation in its own right. My study has two aims: building a case for queer quarantine and, at the same time, demonstrating how queer quarantine can be used as a new model of analysis to identify and explore some of the ways the Canadian state and dominant culture continue to marginalize and oppress queers despite the rights gains and “acceptance” that some gays and lesbians have achieved. My analysis reveals that in 1970s Toronto, the rapidly increasing visibility of queerness became a public threat necessitating tactical responses from local authorities and the police to quarantine queer spaces.

Queering Vancouver: The Work of the lgbtq Civic Advisory Committee, 2009-14 Catherine Murray* he proposition, so often asserted, that Vancouver is an avant- garde paradise for people who identify as lgbtq (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and queer) merits careful examination.1 What evidence is usually cited? Social movement historians confirm that T lgbtq the city was the site of the first organization – the Association for Social Knowledge (ask) – that influenced national and regional social movements; that it developed a “thick,” active, and diverse associative structure of local gay, lesbian, and transgender rights and service groups; that it was the site of transformative protests or events; and that it is today well ensconced within Pacific Northwest and global social networks.2 Its lgbtq groups have achieved a distinctive record of groundbreaking struggles – even if there is as yet little agreement among social historians * I am indebted to the International Women’s World (2011) panel, the members of which discussed the first draft of this article; to Sarah Sparks, research assistant and MA graduate in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University; the constructive anonymous reviewers from BC Studies; and, especially, BC Studies’ editor Graeme Wynn. 1 Manon Tremblay, ed., Queer Mobilizations: Social Movement Activism and Canadian Public Policy (Vancouver: ubc Press, 2015), 31. Like Tremblay, I use the term “queer” to designate all non-heterosexual people. 2 For queer urban history of Vancouver, see Anne-Marie Bouthillette, “Queer and Gendered Housing: A Tale of Two Neighborhoods in Vancouver,” in Queers in Space: Communities, Public Spaces, Sites of Resistance, ed.

  • Gender Identity and Sexuality
GENDER IDENTITY AND IN/FERTILITY by Michelle Walks Bachelor of Arts, Simon Fraser University, 2003 Master of Arts, Simon Fraser University, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Interdisciplinary Studies) UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Okanagan) April 2013 © Michelle Walks, 2013 Abstract Pregnancy is considered a feminine experience in mainstream Canadian culture. Babies identified as female at birth are expected to grow up to become feminine heterosexual mothers. This research considers the desires, choices, and experiences of individuals who were identified as female at birth, but who do not identify as feminine heterosexual women; this dissertation focuses on the reproductive desires, choices, and experiences of butch lesbians, transmen, and genderqueer individuals in British Columbia. Three methods and two distinct populations formed this research. Participant observation was conducted in 21 cities across southern BC. Questionnaires were completed by 28 health care professionals (HCPs), and by 46 butch lesbian, transmen, and genderqueer (BTQ) individuals. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 10 HCPs, 8 BTQ individuals who had experienced at least one successful pregnancy, and 4 BTQ individuals who had either experienced or been diagnosed with a condition linked to infertility. What I found, is that for many BTQ individuals, reproduction associated with the female body (ie: pregnancy and breastfeeding) is not exclusively considered a feminine desire or experience. In fact, what I discovered is that BTQ individuals who experience pregnancy and breastfeeding explicitly challenge the cultural fetish associating femininity with reproduction (including pregnancy, breastfeeding, mothering, and fertility).
