On the basis of 2332 vegetation relevés, 30 sociological species groups were developed for Latvian needle-leaved forests. All vascular plant, moss and lichen species were used in analysis. Phi coefficient (Φ) was used as a fidelity measure for calculation of sociological groups, and the threshold value was setΦ > 45.0. All 30 sociological groups were divided into three clusters according to their phytosociological characterization: 10 stable (constant) groups, 13 quasistable (semi-constant), and 7 serial groups. Analysis of Ellenberg indicator values revealed that the most important environmental factors explaining differences in species composition among groups are soil fertility (Ellenberg nitrogen value) and climate continentality (Ellenberg continentality value). Analysis of distribution of sociological species groups into different syntaxa confirmed that Latvian needle-leaved forest plant communities belong to three forest vegetation classes of Eurosiberian boreonemoral zone: Vaccinio-Piceetea, Pulsatillo-Pinetea, and Querco-Fagetea. Simmons Abstract—Divergence between evolutionary lineages is not always marked by the development of obvious species-specific characters, whether morphological, physiological, or ecological. Consequentially, extant biodiversity can easily be overlooked. These cryptic species are often not recognized until genetic data are in hand, as is the case for the novel taxon we describe here. Carex viridistellata in Carex section Ceratocystis is an endemic species restricted to calcareous wetlands of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, where it has previously been collected as Carex cryptolepis. Crosses between Carex viridistellata and Carex cryptolepis produce sterile F1 hybrids, and the two species are differentiated by a number of subtle morphological characters, as well as aspects of their respective ecologies. Phylogenetic analyses of nrDNA strongly indicate monophyly of Carex viridistellata and its sister species relationship with the North Carolina narrow endemic Carex lutea. -

(section Ceratocystis, Cyperaceae) in Poland: taxonomy, morphological variation, and soil conditions Helena Więcław Department of Plant Taxonomy and Phytogeography, Faculty of Biology, University of Szczecin, Wąska 13, 71-415 Szczecin, Poland, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Sedges of Carex flava agg., typical of moist or wet habitats, are difficult to classify because of a lack of clear-cut morphological differences between them and the existence of numerous hybrids. This monograph presents results of research conducted in 2007-2012 in various parts of Poland. The plant material consisted of 1852 living specimens of Carex flava agg., collected from 80 localities, and dried specimens from 26 herbaria and from 7 private collections. The analysis involved 45 morphological characters (34 quantitative and 11 qualitative) and 9 soil parameters. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistical methods were used to process the data. The results confirm the taxonomic classification dividing theC. flavagroup into 4 species: C. flava s.s., C. lepidocarpa, C. demissa, and C. viridula. This classification is based on (i) a high observed level of morphological separation of these taxa, resulting mostly from differences in generative characters, i.e. length of the utricle and its beak, and percentage ratio of beak length to total utricle length; (ii) integrity of the taxa at the sites where they coexist, although some intermediate forms resulting from hybridization are also present; (iii) habitat preferences of the taxa, especially the preference of C. -
Monocotyledonous Flowering Plants
Queen’s University Biological Station Species List: Monocotyledonous Flowering Plants The current list has been compiled by Dr. Ivy Schoepf, QUBS Research Coordinator, in 2018 and includes data gathered by direct observation, collected by researchers at the station and/or assembled using digital distribution maps. The current list of monocotyledonous flowering plants is based on a list of trees, shrubs and vines originally compiled by Mark A. Conboy and Adele Crowder in 2009 and has been updated using resources from The Natural Heritage Information Centre (April 2018); The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (February 2018); iNaturalist and GBIF. Contact Ivy to report any errors, omissions and/or new sightings. Because vascular plants (phylum: Tracheophyta) comprise an incredibly diverse phylum, which includes thousands of species, to help the reader navigate their staggering diversity, I have broken it down into several class-based sub-lists. The current list is, therefore, not comprehensive and focuses only on a subset of vascular plants, that of the monocotyledonous flowering plants. If you wish to find information regarding horsetails, conifers, clubmosses & firmosses, adder’s-tongues, moonworts & grape-ferns, ferns and dicotyledonous flowering plants, please consult their very own lists published on our website. Flowering plants (sub-phylum: Angiospermae) have been remarkably difficult to classify and there has been a lot of debate surrounding their taxonomy. We have followed the classification provided by the Takhtajan system and the Cronquist system, which is used by The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, iNaturalist and GBIF. Following these systems, flowering plants are grouped into two major classes: Dicotyledoneae (or Magnoliopsida) and Monocotyledonae (or Liliopsida), based on whether the plant has two cotyledons, or embryonic leaves, within each seed (i.e. -

Bot. Fennici 51: 129–147. Natural populations of hybrids and populations of parental species of the Carex flava aggregate, growing in seven localities in Poland, were studied. Statistical methods were used to analyse 30 morphological characters measured from 399 dried specimens. The results allowed us to recognize the following hybrids: C. ¥ alsatica [C. flava ¥ C. demissa], C. ¥ ruedtii [C. flava ¥ C. lepidocarpa], C. ¥ schatzii [C. lepidocarpa ¥ C. viridula] and C. demissa ¥ C. viridula. We found that (i) the utricle and beak lengths in the hybrid are usually similar to those of the parents that have longer utricles and beaks, and that (ii) introgression typically occurs towards the parental taxon dominant in an area and that with an earlier flowering period. The morphological characters most useful in distinguishing between hybrids and their parental species in the C. flava aggregate are the size of the utricle and the beak as well as characters transgressive in the hybrids, associated with inflorescence length, location of female spikes, and length of male utricles and their peduncles. -

Chromosome numbers for Carex argunensis, C. callitrichos, C. campylorhina, C. flavocuspis subsp. krascheninnikovii, C. paniculata subsp. hansenii, C. pallida, C. quadriflora and C. xiphium are reported here for the first time. The first reports are presented for the European portion of the distribution area of Carex obtusata and for the Central European portion of the distributional areas of C.
