The Week Ahead 31 August – 06 September 2020 The Week Ahead 31 August - 6 September EU long-term budget. Members of the Committee on Budgets will debate the state of play of the negotiations on the EU’s next long-term budget 2021-2027 (MFF), the reform of the own-resources system and the recovery plan. Parliament’s negotiating team will report back to the committee on the first round of interinstitutional talks, which took place on 27 August. (Tuesday) Human Rights/Denis Mukwege. The Subcommittee on Human Rights will hold an Agenda exchange of views with Dr Denis Mukwege, laureate of the Sakharov Prize in 2014 and Nobel Peace Prize in 2018. Dr Mukwege has been repeatedly subject to death threats for denouncing human rights abuses, sexual violation against women and recent worrying development including mass murders in the Democratic Republic of Congo. (Monday) COVID-19. The Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Andrea Ammon will brief the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety on the latest COVID-19 situation update. (Wednesday) German Presidency. In a second set of meetings after the summer break, ministers will conclude the presentation of German priorities in the areas of fisheries, international trade, economy, budget, culture, justice and constitutional affairs. The first set of discussions took place between 3 and 16 July. Germany will hold the Presidency of the Council until the end of 2020 (Tuesday and Thursday). Digital issues. EU’s future initiatives on digital, artificial intelligence and data will be discussed in the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee. MEPs will assess the opportunities and challenges posed by new technologies and how the EU should regulate and lead the way in these fields. (Thursday) LUX Award. Sabine Verheyen, Chair of the Committee on Culture and Education, will launch the new LUX Award at the Venice Film Festival. LUX, the European Audience Film Award, is given annually to a competing film by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in partnership with the European Commission and Europa Cinemas. (Saturday) Childhood Cancer Awareness. The European Parliament will light up in gold the first week of September in symbol of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The international month aims to raise support, funding and awareness of childhood cancers and the impact for sufferers and families. Parliament recently decided to set up a special committee on beating cancer tasked with evaluating opportunities for the EU to take concrete action, identifying legislation and other measures that can help prevent and fight cancer. On Tuesday, EP President David Sassoli will meet with the Multiannual Financial Framework-Own Resources Contact Group before attending the inauguration of the “Citizen’s Garden” in the former home of Belgian artist Antoine Wiertz. On Wednesday, the President will meet with Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
