The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 by Bakary Gibba A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Bakary Gibba (2011) The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Bakary Gibba Department of History, University of Toronto Abstract This thesis investigates the efforts of the West Indian Church to establish and run a fascinating Mission in an area of West Africa already influenced by Islam or traditional religion. It focuses mainly on the Pongas Mission’s efforts to spread the Gospel but also discusses its missionary hierarchy during the formative years in the Pongas Country between 1855 and 1863, and the period between 1863 and 1873, when efforts were made to consolidate the Mission under black control and supervision. Between 1873 and 1900 when additional Sierra Leonean assistants were hired, relations between them and African-descended West Indian missionaries, as well as between these missionaries and their Eurafrican host chiefs, deteriorated. More efforts were made to consolidate the Pongas Mission amidst greater financial difficulties and increased French influence and restrictive measures against it between 1860 and 1935. These followed an earlier prejudiced policy in the Mission that was strongly influenced by the hierarchical nature of nineteenth-century Barbadian society, which was abandoned only after successive deaths

Members expressed the view that it would be helpful for the Commission to receive a report from each diocese as to the status of implementation of recommendations made by the Commission. Therefore the Commission requests that each diocese kindly submit a report to the Provincial Secretary before meetings of the Commission in order that an assessment may be undertaken by PFLC in furtherance of its mandate. The Commission took a further look at the following matters from its report to Provincial Synod 2015.

THE 40TH MEETING OF PROVINCIAL SYNOD OF THE CHURCH IN THE PROVINCE OF THE WEST INDIES THE COMMUNIQUÉ WE, the members of the House of Bishops, the House of Clergy and the House of Laity of the Church in the Province of the West Indies at the fortieth Triennial Meeting in Trinidad held at the Cascadia Hotel and Conference Centre, Cascade, St. Anns from 25th to 30th May, 2019, GREET you in the name of our Risen and Ascended Lord, Jesus Christ. The Synod gathered under the theme “Being and Making Disciples in our Caribbean Context” #Called!Empowered!Sent!” On the 25th May, the delegates were welcomed by Senior Bishop of the Province, The Rt. Rev’d Errol Brooks, the Bishop of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba (NECA). The Bishop of the host Diocese, the Rt. Rev’d Claude Berkley, joined the Senior Bishop in extending welcome to the Diocese and the Synod. The Synod extended a warm welcome to Observers Mr. Kevin Ryan of Anglican Men of the West Indies, Mrs Valerie West of the Mothers’ Union and Mr. Cliffton Nedd of the Anglican Alliance. The three houses of the Synod, the House of Bishops, the House of Clergy and the House of Laity met separately in a pre-synod session to peruse the Synod Journal and other synod documentation. The business session continued with a presentation by Judy Joseph McSween, Board Member, Centre for Emotional Intelligence and Human Relations, on the topic of Emotional Intelligence for Leaders of Faith-Based Organisations. This presentation enabled members of Synod to reflect on the fact that theological training alone was not enough to prepare them for the rigours of religious leadership.

Robert Mclean Thompson Celebrations in 1987
THE NGLICAN Vol 18 No. 2 Published By The Diocese Of Jamaica & The Cayman Islands PRICE $100 SUMMER 2020 studies at McGill University earned him the Bachelor of Theology Degree and the Master’s in Sacred Theology in 1979. He was appointed a Research Fellow at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University in 1988; and he received the Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge in 2004. Action-packed Ministry Oversight for construction of the Church of the Resurrection in Duhaney Park was his major achievement as Assistant Curate at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin. The project assigned by the Rector, the Rev. Canon Ernle Gordon, made Robert Thompson the first Curate in the Diocese to undertake a task of this magnitude. Conceived as a community centre and basic school, the structure showcases the work of two outstanding Jamaican artists, Carl Parboosingh and Bishop Thompson & Charmaine, Christopher Gonzales, both of whom offered his wife of 41 years their service free of cost. In 1980 he was appointed Rector of St. Jude’s, Stony Hill. Describing his 10 years at that Church as “my hardest bit of work,” Bishop Thompson recalls spearheading its Centenary Robert McLean Thompson Celebrations in 1987. This included monthly activities which featured presentations by specially invited guests from overseas.
