From The Dean’s Pen My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! We as a parish and as a Cathedral Church have just concluded another Patronal Festival. It was a good time to celebrate the achievements of the past year, and all of the ministries and organisations had opportunities to host other groups from across the diocese. The Festival Concert and the Meet-and-Greet sessions added new dimensions to the proceedings, and the Festival Forum in its second edition came off as planned and all services and events were successful. However, in order to fully give ownership to the festival theme, "A Cathedral Renaissance: New Life, New Power, New Thought", everyone must get on board and play the role which by virtue of their baptism, they have been empowered to do. In the opinion of many, the Anglican Church in Barbados is at crisis point; the failure to elect a bishop for the Diocese is an indication of that crisis and it points to serious short-comings in the governance of the diocese. The Cathedral, given its pivotal role in the Diocese, cannot ignore what has happened; consequently, it ought also to use the time of crisis to examine opportunities to reclaim its leadership role in the Diocese, The City and Nation. Towards that end, I invite every member to take time out to complete the survey which has been distributed. An analysis of your responses would enable the leadership of the Cathedral to identify some major challenges and to set some immediate, interim and long-term goals. In essence, we should, after the data has been collated and distilled, be able to recognize strengths to build on; areas in our mutual life together that concern us; mission to our communities; and aspirations for the future. I, therefore, commend this initiative to your careful thought, decisive action, and prayerful consideration. "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,... HYMN OF FELLOWSHIP (Worshippers join hands for the singing of the final Refrain) There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, and I know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord. There are sweet expressions on each face, and I know they feel the presence of the Lord. Refrain: 5 Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet Heavenly Dove, stay right here with us, filling us with your love. And for these blessings, we lift our hearts in praise, without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived when we shall leave this place. There are blessings you cannot receive till you know him in his fullness, and believe. You’re the one to profit when you say, ‘I am going to walk with Jesus all the way.’ THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Y E AR B First Lesson: Job 1:1; 2:1-10 Comments: “Job’s integrity in suffering” In our first lesson we hear the beginning of the story of Job: the plight of a righteous man. Satan appears in God’s heavenly court and charges that Job is upright only because of the many blessings that are his. God permits Satan to test Job greatly through terrible and tragic trials. Then, through dialogue and poetry, the Book of Job explores the problem of human suffering and faith in God’s ways with unflinching honesty and feeling. Psalm 26 “A plea for justice by one who serves the Lord well.” Second Lesson: (The Epistle) Hebrew 1:1-4; 2:5-12 Comments: “God has spoken by through a Son” The author of the Letter to the Hebrews teaches that Jesus, the exact imprint of God’s being and the pioneer of our salvation 6 made perfect through suffering, is superior to all the angelic order. God inspired the prophets but has now spoken through a Son, the heir of all things, and through whom the worlds were created. For a while made lower than the angels, he now through his death sanctifies all whom he calls brothers and sisters. The Gospel: Mark 10:2-16 Comments: “Teaching of marriage” In the gospel Jesus, asked about divorce, reaches back to the creation story to set before his hearers the ideal of the marriage relationship, and then blesses children. In Jesus’ lifetime there were many views on divorce, some strict and some more lenient. In one sense, Jesus is the strictest of all: what through natural union God has made one cannot be separated by human action. Yet, in another sense, Jesus’ answer refused to deal with the question in the way it is asked. Instead, he honours the solemnity and purpose of marriage. Anything less in sin, which cannot be dismissed by human regulations. His disciples seem surprised by this teaching and also by his embracing of children. CATHEDRAL NEWS 1. Vacation: Mrs. Chloe Grant, the Verger is currently on holiday; Ms. Harriet Lowe will perform the duties of Verger and Ms. Cynthia McCaskie will be assisting with housekeeping matters in the interim. 5. It focuses mainly on the Pongas Mission’s efforts to spread the Gospel but also discusses its missionary hierarchy during the formative years in the Pongas Country between 1855 and 1863, and the period between 1863 and 1873, when efforts were made to consolidate the Mission under black control and supervision. Between 1873 and 1900 when additional Sierra Leonean assistants were hired, relations between them and African-descended West Indian missionaries, as well as between these missionaries and their Eurafrican host chiefs, deteriorated. More efforts were made to consolidate the Pongas Mission amidst greater financial difficulties and increased French influence and restrictive measures against it between 1860 and 1935. These followed an earlier prejudiced policy in the Mission that was strongly influenced by the hierarchical nature of nineteenth-century Barbadian society, which was abandoned only after successive deaths

The Synod gathered under the theme “Being and Making Disciples in our Caribbean Context” #Called!Empowered!Sent!” On the 25th May, the delegates were welcomed by Senior Bishop of the Province, The Rt. Rev’d Errol Brooks, the Bishop of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba (NECA). The Bishop of the host Diocese, the Rt. Rev’d Claude Berkley, joined the Senior Bishop in extending welcome to the Diocese and the Synod. The Synod extended a warm welcome to Observers Mr. Kevin Ryan of Anglican Men of the West Indies, Mrs Valerie West of the Mothers’ Union and Mr. Cliffton Nedd of the Anglican Alliance. The three houses of the Synod, the House of Bishops, the House of Clergy and the House of Laity met separately in a pre-synod session to peruse the Synod Journal and other synod documentation. The business session continued with a presentation by Judy Joseph McSween, Board Member, Centre for Emotional Intelligence and Human Relations, on the topic of Emotional Intelligence for Leaders of Faith-Based Organisations. This presentation enabled members of Synod to reflect on the fact that theological training alone was not enough to prepare them for the rigours of religious leadership.

    THE NGLICAN Vol 18 No. 2 Published By The Diocese Of Jamaica & The Cayman Islands PRICE $100 SUMMER 2020 studies at McGill University earned him the Bachelor of Theology Degree and the Master’s in Sacred Theology in 1979. He was appointed a Research Fellow at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University in 1988; and he received the Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge in 2004. Action-packed Ministry Oversight for construction of the Church of the Resurrection in Duhaney Park was his major achievement as Assistant Curate at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin. The project assigned by the Rector, the Rev. Canon Ernle Gordon, made Robert Thompson the first Curate in the Diocese to undertake a task of this magnitude. Conceived as a community centre and basic school, the structure showcases the work of two outstanding Jamaican artists, Carl Parboosingh and Bishop Thompson & Charmaine, Christopher Gonzales, both of whom offered his wife of 41 years their service free of cost. In 1980 he was appointed Rector of St. Jude’s, Stony Hill. Describing his 10 years at that Church as “my hardest bit of work,” Bishop Thompson recalls spearheading its Centenary Robert McLean Thompson Celebrations in 1987. This included monthly activities which featured presentations by specially invited guests from overseas. During - Born to Minister his tenure, he also guided the rebuilding of St. Phillip’s, Brandon Hill and St. Christopher’s, he Rt. Rev.
