The Dean: My brothers and sisters, I greet you in the name of Jesus Christ! Grace and peace be with you. People: And also with you. The Dean: Welcome to this Cathedral Church of St Michael and All Angels as we have gathered here to welcome the 14th Bishop of our Diocese of Barbados into his Cathedral, and to enthrone him in the chair appointed for his office. Let us now stand and lift our voices in the singing of the hymn 730. 4 HYMN 730 God is here! As we his people meet to offer praise and prayer, may we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share: Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts wait the coming of His Spirit into open minds and hearts. Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; here are table, font and pulpit, here the cross has central place. Here in honesty of preaching, here in silence, as in speech, here in newness and renewal God the Spirit comes to each. Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd's flock and fold; here as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us as of old. Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore what it means in daily living to believe and to adore. Lord of all, of Church and Kingdom, in an age of change and doubt, keep us faithful to the gospel, help us work your purpose out. 5 Here, in this day's dedication, all we have to give, receive; we who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe. The following procession is formed and makes its way down the centre aisle of the Cathedral during the second verse of the Opening Hymn 730: The Second Crucifer & The Second Torch Bearers Acolyte The Diocesan Registrar, Mr. Michael Alleyne The Chancellor, Ms. Mary Haynes The Canons of The Cathedral Chapter The Archdeacon The Cathedral Verger The Dean THE ENTRY OF THE LORD BISHOP The Registrar, Chancellor, Dean and Chapter will position themselves within the Cathedral at the West Door which shall be locked by the Dean. The Bishop, standing outside the door with his Chaplain, shall knock three times and say: The Bishop: Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. (Psalm 118:19) The Dean, unlocking the door, shall open it before the Bishop. As the Dean unlocks the door a fanfare of trumpets shall be sounded. FANFARE 6 The Bishop, advancing into the doorway, shall in a loud voice, that he may be heard of all within, say: The Bishop: I, Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell, by Divine permission Bishop of Barbados, having been duly appointed and confirmed, make my request of you, Very Reverend Brother, that I be conducted to the Bishop's Seat in the Cathedral Church of Barbados, there to be Inducted, Installed and Enthroned according to ancient usage and prescriptive right. The Dean shall reply inviting the Bishop to enter, saying: The Dean: Michael, our Right Reverend Father in God, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we, the Chapter of your Cathedral Church, together with the people of this Diocese, bid you welcome to your Cathedral Church of St Michael and All Angels. People: In the name of the Lord we greet you. The Bishop: My brothers of the Cathedral Chapter and dear people of our Diocese, with all my heart, I thank you for your welcome. I hope to serve you, and to serve with you in Christ’s name and in the joy of His Spirit. I pray that the ministry which we will share may be pleasing to God; that it may strengthen the life of this diocese and impact spiritually the Island of Barbados. May the peace of the God our Father be upon this house and upon this company. The Bishop’s procession makes it way up the Nave, from the West Door, during the singing of Psalm 84. 7 PSALM 84 (Chant by C. H. H. Parry) 1. O HOW amiable are thy dwellings : thou Lord of hosts! 2. My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord : my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. 3. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young : even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. 4. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house : they will be alway praising thee. 5. Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee : in whose heart are thy ways.
