It takes great skill, discipline, hard work, and commitment to compete in an event of this calibre. This event is an opportunity to showcase and promote girls’ basketball in the city of Vancouver by bringing together the best public and private school teams in a meaningful event. I wish to thank the many local organizations for commiting to this event and providing scholarships for our graduating athletes. I hope to see this event continue and even expand in the coming years. David Prissinotti LMISSAA President LMISSAA VGBA welcomes you to our eighth annual VGBA LANGARA CHALLENGE. On behalf of our Board of Directors, we send our heartfelt gratitude to our scholarship and tournament organizing committee, along with our sponsors, for allowing us to create this one-of-a-kind elite tournament for our female basketball players in Vancouver. For the fourth year, we are thrilled to expand this tournament to include a Junior Girls Division. This event would not have been possible without the generosity of Langara College and our partnership with both the Vancouver Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association and the Lower Mainland Independent Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association. It is our dream to create a sustainable basketball program for high school girls in Vancouver and continue to provide opportunties where these female athletes can develop their skills, sportsmanship, and a love for the game! OBJECTIVES (a) To promote, provide, and coordinate girls basketball opportunities for Vancouver student-athletes at all levels of development; participation to elite. (b) To build and sustain partnership with other organizations wishing to support the mission statement and objectives of the Association. (c) To create a sustainable basketball program for Vancouver girls. (d) To provide opportunities for girls to develop basketball skills, sportsmanship, and a love of the game. (e) To provide supervised and accessible basketball programs. (f) To provide quality coaching and training. (g) To develop a core group of volunteer coaches and advisors as board members. (h) To establish and maintain a bursary program for girls needing financial assistance to participate in training or playing in club/provincial/national programs. (i) To establish and maintain a bursary/scholarship program for girls wish- ing to play post-secondary basketball. We are extremely honoured to be the host site of this truly extraordinary event and look forward to watching the top high school girl’s basketball teams in Vancouver compete in the 8th Annual VGBA Challenge. The emphasis of these awards will be placed on students-athletes who have competed at an elite level of basketball, while displaying excellence in both sportsmanship and citizenship. Applicants should also show a commitment to their school and/or community through involvement in coaching, officiating, leadership and volunteer activities. Applicants should be candid about barriers to success which can be verified with a coach’s letter of reference. LANGARA COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS Amount: $1,000 1 minimum Available to any graduating player from a Vancouver public or independent school who is currently on their senior basketball team. Successful applicants need to attend Langara College on a full-time basis in 2015/2016. Full-time is defined as taking nine credits in one term. Langara College Selection Committee will use similar guidelines to the VGBA Langara Challenge scholarships and will make final selection. VGBA FALCON BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIPS Amount: $1,000 1 minimum Available to any graduating player from a Vancouver public or independent school who commits and becomes a team member to the Langara Falcons Women’s Basketball program in 2015/16. Applicants do not have to participate in the VGBA Langara Challenge. Student athletes are expected to take a minimum nine credits per term to play any athletic sport at Langara.
