Veckorapport 22-2018 Veckorapport 22-2018 Introduktion - beskrivning av olika tittarmått Denna veckorapport baseras på tittarresultaten från en TV-panel som rapporterar med s k people meters. Panelen är representativ för hushåll i Sverige och har valts utifrån en omfattande basundersökning. I tittarpanelen ingår 3000 hushåll eller cirka 6360 individer i åldrarna mellan 3-99 år. Tittarmätningarna marknadsförs av MMS Mediamätning i Skandinavien AB och utförs av Nielsen Media Research. Alla data är försedda med copyright MMS. Förutom topplistorna för var och en av trettiosex TV-kanaler redovisas också en veckoöversikt gällande TV-tittandet under veckan. I denna översikt används följande definitioner: ● Räckvidd per dag: andel (%) som sett minst 5 sammanhängande minuter på resp kanal samt totalt på TV. ● Räckvidd per dag: antal tittare (i tusental) som sett minst 5 sammanhängande minuter på resp kanal samt totalt på TV. ● Tittartid per dag: tid i minuter som ägnats åt resp kanal samt totalt på TV. ● Tittartidsandel: andel (%) av den totala tittartiden som ägnats åt resp kanal. ● Räckvidd per vecka: andel (%) som sett minst 15 sammanhängande minuter på resp kanal samt totalt på TV. Jordan Associate Professor of Communications Michael Elavsky Associate Professor of Communications Marie Hardin Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT This thesis critiques programming on the children’s media channel Nicktoons for patterns of racial representation -- including the presence of stereotyping -- in characters. As research has shown that representation of ethnicity may be especially influential to children viewers, and that there are precedents for problematic racial representations in popular media, including children's media, the continued examination of patterns of racial-ethnic group member representation and stereotyping in character depictions has significant implications. Utilizing textual analysis, three Nicktoons’ programs are examined for racialized constructions of characters, including constructions with hegemonic and ethnocentric implications. The thesis argues that three programs, Back at the Barnyard, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Tak and the Power of JuJu problematically construct analogies of African Americans, Asians, and native peoples, respectively. The constructions in these Nicktoons programs typically “other” these groups when contrasted to dominant white culture -- or at least the animated stand-ins for dominant white culture -- and imply cultural hierarchies in which white culture is superior and/or the norm.

From what I can tell, the Hasbro/Discovery partnership in The Hub has been an amazing success. I watch the channel almost every day. Most of its programming is--and has been, for the past 3.5 years--excellent. From the original series (FiM, Pound Puppies, Strawberry Shortcake, LPS, Dan Vs., Aquabats Super Show, Family Game Night, Care Bears, Transformers, Haunting Hour), to all the other wonderful shows/sitcoms (oh my goodness!! Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Goosebumps, Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, Step By Step, Who's the Boss, Family Ties, The Facts of Life, Sister, Sister, Sabrina, Atomic Betty, etc.), to the extremely well-chosen family movies (I loved it when they aired the Homeward Bound films, All Dogs Go to Heaven 2...today I saw Spaceballs...and they've just made so many other great movie picks every season.) They've been an outstanding example of listening to your viewers and giving them what they want. Even their misfires and middle-of-the-road shows are more than bearable (SheZow, animated Sabrina, Teenage Fairytale Dropouts, Kid President, Parents Just Don't Understand, and such.) If Hasbro were to grow dissatisfied with controlling six hours of its toy-based cartoons daily on Hub (which seems like a fair deal they've cut, tbh), and moved them over to Cartoon Network or Disney...well, at least the shows would still continue on, and be a MASSIVE boon to either of those channels.
