APPROVED RIDES + ATTRACTIONS 2 WELCOME TO NICKELODEON UNIVERSE® Our goal is to make sure that you experience all the thrills and chills this theme park has to offer while staying safe. This instruction manual was created to assist you in making the correct decision on which rides are right for your use. 3 NICKELODEON UNIVERSE® PROVIDES THESE SAFETY SYSTEMS: Theme park rides incorporate safety systems designed by the manufacturer to accommodate people of average physical stature and body proportions. These safety systems may place restrictions on your ability to safely experience the ride. Guests with the following may want to reconsider riding the ride, as the rider may not be safely accommodated: • History of heart problems • Back or neck troubles • Had recent surgery • Currently pregnant • Body braces, leg or arm casts • Restrictive devices • Physical disabilities The ride admission policy has been developed based on the recommendations of the manufacturer, past experience and evaluation of each ride, in regular and emergency operating conditions. The ultimate consideration is the ability of each person to endure the dynamics of each ride without risk of injury to the individual or other riders. Our ride operators are trained to make your visit a memorable one. However, they are not trained to transfer guests with mobility impairment in or out of the ride. It is essential that a responsible person accompany guests requiring such assistance. The responsible person assisting must be qualified to ride and capable of controlling the actions of the unqualified rider. Should additional assistance be needed, our central Guest Service desk is located near the Carousel at the north entrance of Nickelodeon Universe®. 4 ACCESSIBILITY IN NICKELODEON UNIVERSE® Nickelodeon Universe® retail shops and Guest Services are accessible to guests with mobility impairments. Dutchman’s Deck Adventure Course, located on level two, is accessible to guests with mobility impairments by using the elevator located in West Market Square. RESTROOMS All restrooms in Nickelodeon Universe are accessible to guests with mobility impairments. Family restroom facilities are located in the southwest corner of the park, near Shell Shock and the north entrance to the park, near the Namco® Arcade and Midway. TELEPHONES Telephones are located at all main entrances of the Mall and have at least one phone that is accessible to guests in a wheelchair. TTY equipped phones are also available on level one. 5 BASIC RIDE INFORMATION In order to ride independently, a rider must have: • the ability to exhibit seated postural control under dynamic conditions of the ride • appropriate center of gravity, control of upper torso (including neck and head), ability to hold on with one functioning arm, ability to brace self with one functioning leg • minimum of two functioning extremities • ability to enter/exit ride within specified parameters without endangering self or others • mental capacity to be aware of the hazards, to self or others, of failure to ride in prescribed manner Depending on the specific dynamics of each ride, the following may not be permitted: • handheld infants, Milwaukee brace, cervical collar or neck brace, broken collarbone, full arm cast, braced arm cast, brace between legs or full leg cast In case of an emergency, extreme weather conditions, mechanical problems or other interruptions, an evacuation may be required. Guests may need to maneuver across catwalks at high points of a ride and may need to go down steeply inclined catwalks or stairs. A detailed explanation of this information can be found on pages 11 +12. For safety reasons, large items such as strollers, wheelchairs, stuffed animals, clutch purses, shopping bags, umbrellas, crutches, cameras, etc., may be taken past the ride entrance, but may not be permitted on the ride. Headphones, cell phones, tablets, etc. may not be used on the rides. Please store such items in lockers or leave them with a non-rider. Ride operators will not be able to hold items belonging to guests. 6 SERVICE ANIMALS Service animals can be accommodated on the following rides: Carousel Bench, Ghost Blasters, El Círculo del Cielo and Big Rigs. See an Operations Supervisor for specific information concerning your service animal. CASTS + BRACES Guests with a cast or leg or arm braces will be restricted from riding a ride where the cast, leg or arm braces may present a danger to the rider or others. If in doubt regarding your ability to safely experience a ride, consult with an Operations Supervisor. Entry through the special access entrance will be limited to the guests requiring the access and up to three escorts. Additional members in your party should enter the ride through the standard entrance and join the guest and escorts at the loading area. Special access entrances are intended to accommodate guests needing special assistance and not to bypass others waiting in line. CHAPERONES When a guest is required to be accompanied by a responsible chaperone, the responsible chaperone must be able to safely ride the ride, in addition to assisting the guest during entering and exiting and maintaining their postural control under the dynamics of the ride. Guests with mobility impairments shall have the option of riding two (2) consecutive times. After the second consecutive ride there may be an additional wait time prior to the individual repeating the same ride. 67 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SECURE LOOSE ARTICLES Please leave all loose articles with a non-riding member of your party or in a provided cabinet at certain rides. Nickelodeon Universe® is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen articles. UNIVERSE OF LIGHT A nightly light show that spans much of the park and multiple floors on the south side of the Mall uses strobe lights and smoke effects. See our website or Guest Services for more complete schedule. SMOKING POLICY In accordance with Bloomington City Council Ordinance, Nickelodeon Universe prohibits smoking of any kind, including electronic devices. Smoking is allowed outside Mall of America®, 25 feet or more from the entrance. FOOD AND BEVERAGE Please refrain from eating and drinking refreshments in the loading area or on rides. APPROPRIATE ATTIRE Nickelodeon Universe is a family oriented theme park and appropriate dress, shirts and shoes are required at all times. Graphics and language on clothing must be acceptable while in Nickelodeon Universe. Bathing suits are not allowed. 87 LINE JUMPING Everyone should be given a fair opportunity to enjoy a ride as quickly as possible, therefore line jumping is not permitted under any circumstances. CAMERA POLICY Picture taking on most rides is not permitted due to safety reasons. Ride operators may not hold cameras for guests. Cameras are considered loose articles and must follow the loose articles policy. Cameras are permitted on El Círculo del Cielo Ferris Wheel and the bench of the Carousel. LOST AND FOUND All the items found in Nickelodeon Universe® are turned into Guest Services. If you lose an item on a ride, an immediate search may not be possible, but there will be a search for the article as soon as the opportunity is available. GUESTS SEPARATED FROM THEIR PARTY To prevent separation from your group, please supervise your children and establish a specific time and place to meet in Nickelodeon Universe. Remind all members of your group to ask a uniformed employee for help if they become separated or lost. Nickelodeon Universe will contact security immediately once a uniformed employee is notified. Parties can be reunited at Guest Services. 9 SPECIAL SERVICES Nickelodeon Universe® offers several services to accommodate everyone. Some rides in Nickelodeon Universe have a special access entrance, which is marked with an illustrated sign. All guests using this service, with up to three escorts, are asked to wait for assistance at the special access entrance. Mall of America® has a limited supply of wheelchairs at Guest Services, located on level one, at all main entrances. A $5 deposit is required. We urge guests to bring their own. Wheelchairs can be accommodated in the retail shops, arcade and game areas. All restrooms in Nickelodeon Universe are designed for wheelchair access. Service Animals, for guests who require them, are welcome in Nickelodeon Universe. 11 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT CRITERIA In Nickelodeon Universe®, height requirements have been developed for safety and to maintain the ride manufacturer’s recommendations. Some children under the height requirement may be able to ride certain rides with a chaperone. Shoes are required on all rides in Nickelodeon Universe except the Pineapple Poppers, where socks are required. Height requirements are enforced. The following criteria may be required to ride a particular ride safely: 1. ABILITY TO EXHIBIT INDEPENDENT SEATED POSTURAL CONTROL UNDER THE DYNAMIC CONDITIONS OF THE RIDE. Explanation: The guest must have the body and spinal control to sit upright without aid of other people or devices and be able to maintain the proper riding posture even during bumping or other characteristic movements of the ride. Certain ride units, such as carousel figures, requires the ability to form a saddle posture with the guest’s thighs. 2. APPROPRIATE CENTER OF GRAVITY. Explanation: The guest’s body must have the appropriate weight distribution for the ride. 3. CONTROL OF UPPER TORSO INCLUDING NECK AND HEAD. Explanation: The guest must have sufficient muscle control to support his/her head, neck and upper torso during the course of the ride, including the dynamic motion of the ride. 4. MINIMUM OF TWO FUNCTIONING EXTREMITIES. Explanation: Guests must have a minimum of two functioning extremities (one arm and one leg) to brace themselves during the ride and assist in entering and exiting the ride unit.

  • Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907)
Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Communications SASSY COWS AND MAGICAL JUJU: REPRESENTATIONS OF RACE AND ETHNICITY ON THREE NICKTOONS PROGRAMS A Thesis in Media Studies by Nicole M. Lawrence © 2012 Nicole M. Lawrence Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts December 2012 ii The thesis of Nicole M. Lawrence was reviewed and approved* by the following: Matthew P. McAllister Professor of Communications Thesis Adviser Matthew F. Jordan Associate Professor of Communications Michael Elavsky Associate Professor of Communications Marie Hardin Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT This thesis critiques programming on the children’s media channel Nicktoons for patterns of racial representation -- including the presence of stereotyping -- in characters. As research has shown that representation of ethnicity may be especially influential to children viewers, and that there are precedents for problematic racial representations in popular media, including children's media, the continued examination of patterns of racial-ethnic group member representation and stereotyping in character depictions has significant implications. Utilizing textual analysis, three Nicktoons’ programs are examined for racialized constructions of characters, including constructions with hegemonic and ethnocentric implications. The thesis argues that three programs, Back at the Barnyard, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Tak and the Power of JuJu problematically construct analogies of African Americans, Asians, and native peoples, respectively. The constructions in these Nicktoons programs typically “other” these groups when contrasted to dominant white culture -- or at least the animated stand-ins for dominant white culture -- and imply cultural hierarchies in which white culture is superior and/or the norm.
