Hamilton and Canon Edward Carpenter. 15s net Prayer and Providence PETER BAELZ One way of approaching the theological questions connected with the doctrine of divine providence is to see them in the context of prayers of petition and intercession. What does the believer really expect when he prays for his fellow men? The questions which arise are all faced by the author, who in answering them is brought to the heart of religious belief, man's dependence upon God and its proper interpretation. And because no account of Christian prayer can be adequate which does not take seriously the Christian hope, he also indicates the way in which Christian life must move to the point of final reconciliation. 22s 6rf net Spirituality for Today Edited by ERIC JAMES The 1967 Parish and People Conference was held at Bede College, Durham at the end of August. This volume collects together the main papers given at the Conference, whose chairman was the Very Rev. John B. Coburn, Dean of the Episcopal Theological School, Cam- bridge, Mass. Miss Mollie Batten writes on 'Spirituality and Living in this World'; the Bishop of Durham on 'Theology Today and Spirituality Today'; Dr Harry Guntrip on 'Psychology and Spirit- uality'; Dr Charles Boxer, O.P. on 'The Contribution of Monasticism'; Canon Eric James on 'Liturgy and Spirituality for Today'; Colin Alves on 'Spirituality and Personal Growth'; and the Archbishop of Canter- bury on 'The Idea of the Holy and the World Today'. i2s6dnet SCM PRESS

With the ideal of renunciation and discipline as their guide, the Franciscans found their worldly organisation increasingly a strain on their faith. This account describes the growth of the Order and the work of the friars as preachers, evangelists, poets, missionaries, scholars and mystics. The author is the present Bishop of Ripon. £5 net

This challenging new series interprets the new directions in contemporary Christian thought. It looks at the changes which have occurred in theology during the last twenty five years, describes the new trends and indicates their relationship with older movements in theology. The seven volumes are planned to help twentieth century Christians to focus their faith intelligently.

First titles now published 1. Introduction to Theology by William Hordern An overall presentation of the current theological situation. The book summarizes schools of thought, themes, and specific ques- tions and answers that are now being debated. 28s.

2. History and Hermeneutics by CarlBraaten Interprets the last decade of theological research and reflection on the relation of Christian faith to history—a struggle to go beyond Barth and Bultmann in stressing the centrality of history for revelation and faith. 28s.
