Issue 3 : Preseason Eagles vs. Jaguars

Vick D ebuts; Eagles’ Off ensive Line and D ef ense

Look to Get on Track B y : K y l e C u s t e r

Entering their third preseason game of the 2009 season, the Eagles are still in search of their first win. But in many ways, that isn’t the main story line surrounding this game – after all, it is still just preseason. Don’t be mistaken – would the Eagles’ coaching staff, players and fans love to walk away with a victory over the visiting ? Absolutely, but there are other issues surrounding the team that need to be resolved. First and foremost, the Eagles need to get many of their walking wounded back on the field. 12 players didn’t make the trip to Indianapolis last week. With the regular season less then three week away, there is time to get healthy but it would be nice to see guys being able to get their reps in a game situation. Ultimately, being healthy for Carolina is the number one priority. However, knocking off some rust and getting on the same page now rather then later would be a positive. Without a doubt, the Eagles’ offensive line is the group to who this applies the most. The projected starting five has not been on the field together since Training Camp started – not one time. In fact, of the five starters, only Center Jamaal Jackson played last week against the Colts. In years past, this may not have been as big of an issue because members of the offensive line had developed the cohesion of playing as a unit for a few years in a row. This year, with two new-comers in LT Jason Peters and RG Stacey Andrews, accompanied with Shawn Andrews’ move from right guard to right tackle, the unit doesn’t have the luxury to just pick up from where they left off last year. Across the board, the Eagles have the chance to be one of the most dominant offensive lines in the league but they need to get healthy first. In addition to returning some starters on the offensive side of the ball, the Eagles defense is looking for a strong showing after back to back average efforts to open the preseason. Granted, the team was up against arguably the two best in the league in and . However, everyone on the defensive side of the ball will tell you they need to play better if this team is going to get to where it wants to be. The Jaguars could be just the team to do that against. Jacksonville has some talent on offense but they don’t really have the quick strike capability of the Patriots or Colts. They’re going to run straight at you with Maurice Jones-Drew and mix in some short to intermediate passes from David Garrard. If the Eagles remain disciplined – stay in their gaps, don’t blow any coverages and win the battle at the line of scrimmage – they will be ok. The last but perhaps most intriguing topic of this game is the probable debut of Michael Vick. The team knew all along that per conditions in his suspension, he would not be able to play in the game last week against the Colts but would be eligible for the team’s final two preseason games against the Jaguars and Jets. According to the coaching staff, Vick has made big strides since his first practice. He has been putting in extra work every day in order to get his body back in the “football shape” it needs to be in. How will that work translate into his first game action in over two and a half years? How long will he be on the field? How exactly will the Eagles use him in this game? There are many questions surrounding Vick’s return and undoubtedly some of Michael Vick will make his them will be answered tonight. B y : S t e p h e n C a r l s o n On Sunday August 9th the Eagles annual Game Day Staff Day at Training Camp was held out at Lehigh University. Despite the threat of heavy thunderstorms, a group of loyal Game Day Staff members made the trek to Bethlehem to watch the Eagles get ready for the season. Luckily, the rain held off and everyone got a chance to spend some time on the field to watch their favorite team up close and personal. After practice everyone retreated inside the Game Day Staff tent where they enjoyed some food and were able to mingle with their fellow Game Day Staff members outside of Lincoln Financial Field. The group had a couple of surprise visitors as Eagles offensive lineman Max Jean-Gilles and linebacker Akeem Jordan stopped by to sign autographs for everyone. The day was wrapped up with a raffle for some awesome Eagles gear. A big thank you goes out to all of our Game Day Staff members who braved the rough weather conditions and made Sunday a great day!
