PONNANI PEPPER PROJECT History Ponnani Is Popularly Known As “The Mecca of Kerala”
PONNANI PEPPER PROJECT HISTORY Ponnani is popularly known as “the Mecca of Kerala”. As an ancient harbour city, it was a major trading hub in the Malabar region, the northernmost end of the state. There are many tales that try to explain how the place got its name. According to one, the prominent Brahmin family of Azhvancherry Thambrakkal once held sway over the land. During their heydays, they offered ponnu aana [elephants made of gold] to the temples, and this gave the land the name “Ponnani”. According to another, due to trade, ponnu [gold] from the Arab lands reached India for the first time at this place, and thus caused it to be named “Ponnani”. It is believed that a place that is referred to as “Tyndis” in the Greek book titled Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is Ponnani. However historians have not been able to establish the exact location of Tyndis beyond doubt. Nor has any archaeological evidence been recovered to confirm this belief. Politically too, Ponnani had great importance in the past. The Zamorins (rulers of Calicut) considered Ponnani as their second headquarters. When Tipu Sultan invaded Kerala in 1766, Ponnani was annexed to the Mysore kingdom. Later when the British colonized the land, Ponnani came under the Bombay Province for a brief interval of time. Still later, it was annexed Malabar and was considered part of the Madras Province for one-and-a-half centuries. Until 1861, Ponnani was the headquarters of Koottanad taluk, and with the formation of the state of Kerala in 1956, it became a taluk in Palakkad district. -
Patterns of Affliction Among Mappila Muslims of Malappuram, Kerala
International Journal of Management and Applied Science, ISSN: 2394-7926 Volume-4, Issue-10, Oct.-2018 http://iraj.in PATTERNS OF AFFLICTION AMONG MAPPILA MUSLIMS OF MALAPPURAM, KERALA FARSANA K.P Research Scholar Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, JNU E-mail: [email protected] Abstract- Each and every community has its own way of understanding on health and illness; it varies from Culture to culture. According to the Mappila Muslims of Malappuram, the state of pain, distress and misery is understood as an affliction to their health. They believe that most of the afflictions are due to the Jinn/ Shaitanic Possession. So they prefer religious healers than the other systems of medicine for their treatments. Thangals are the endogamous community in Kerala, of Yemeni heritage who claim direct descent from the Prophet Mohammed’s family. Because of their sacrosanct status, many Thangals works as religious healers in Northern Kerala. Using the case of one Thangal healer as illustration of the many religious healers in Kerala who engage in the healing practices, I illustrate the patterns of afflictions among Mappila Muslims of Malappuram. Based on the analysis of this Thangal’s healing practice in the local context of Northern Kerala, I further discuss about the modes of treatment which they are providing to them. TRANSLATABILITY OF THE QUR’AN IN REGIONAL VERNACULAR: DISCOURSES AND DIVERSITIES WITHIN THE MAPPILA MUSLIMS OF KERALA, INDIA BY MUHAMMED SUHAIL K A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Qur’an and Sunnah Studies Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences International Islamic University Malaysia JULY 2020 ABSTRACT Engagements of non-Arab Muslim communities with the Qur’an, the Arabic-specific scripture of Islam, are always in a form of improvement. Although a number of theological and linguistic aspects complicate the issue of translatability of the Qur’an, several communities have gradually embraced the practice of translating it. The case of Mappila Muslims of Kerala, India, the earliest individual Muslim community of south Asia, is not different. There is a void of adequate academic attention on translations of the Qur’an into regional vernaculars along with their respective communities in general, and Malayalam and the rich Mappila context, in particular. Thus, this research attempts to critically appraise the Mappila engagements with the Qur’an focusing on its translatability-discourses and methodological diversities. In order to achieve this, the procedure employed is a combination of different research methods, namely, inductive, analytical, historical and critical. The study suggests that, even in its pre-translation era, the Mappilas have uninterruptedly exercised different forms of oral translation in an attempt to comprehend the meaning of the Qur’an both at the micro and macro levels. The translation era, which commences from the late 18th century, witnessed the emergence of huge number of Qur’an translations intertwined with intense debates on its translatability. -

While analyzing the impact of such struggles upon the society one can clearly understand the changes it brought about in the society affecting various spheres of development directly or indirectly.It also provides a vivid picture about the underlying reasons behind such outbursts and thereby serves as an apt indicator of the nature of the then society affected by such unrests.This eventually happensas agrarian sector plays a major role in affectingsociety as it is unduly depending upon the same for basic sustenance. Hence, it is always advisable to understand the problems related with agrarian sector to clearly analyze the problems related with society which is exactly what the nationalist leaders of Indian freedom struggle did to find solution to a long period of suppression by British regime.British always targeted the agrarian sector and land revenue settlement related with the same to control the basic crux of the society. Furthermore, it also played a major role in impacting upon the socio-political scenario of India. -

Department of History University of Calicut, Kerala Abstract: The Khilafat movement which started as an international Muslim agitation against the sovereignty of the British colonial forces all over the world had its repercussions in India also, and its effects were felt among the Muslims of Malabar too. The Malabar Rebellion which started as a violent protest against the exploitation of the feudal landlords, who were mostly Hindus and the supporters of the British colonial rule, soon turned into a part of the freedom struggle and gathered momentum. But unfortunately due to the misguided directions of religions leadership what started as a struggle for freedom against oppression and exploitation soon deteriorated into the horrors of a series of communal conflicts. An examination of the Khilafat movement in Malabar would reveal that the Muslims of Malabar began to identify themselves as part of the National Muslim Community only by the dawn of the 20 th century. The political scenario of Malabar from 1920 to 1925 is specifically marked by the life and activities of Muhammed Abdurahiman. Address for Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT The pre-colonial Malabar was an all-encompassing geographical area that covered the entire south Indian coast sprawling between the Western Ghats and Arabian Sea, with its capital at Kozhikkode. When India was linguistically divided and Kerala was formed in 1956, the Malabar district was geographically divided further for easy administration. The modern day Malabar, comprises of Kozhikkode, Malappuram and few taluks of Kasarkod, Kannur, Wayanad, Palakkad and Thrissur. The Malappuram and Kozhikkod region is predominantly inhabited by Muslims, colloquially called as the Mappilas. The term 'Malabar' is said to have etymologically derived from the Malayalam word 'Malavaram', denoting the location by the side of the hill. The cuisine of Malabar, which is generally believed to be authentic, is in fact, a product of history and a blend of cuisines from all over the world. Delicacies from all over the world blended with the authentic recipes of Malabar, customizing itself to the local and seasonal availability of raw materials in the Malabar Coast. As an outcome of the age old maritime relations with the other countries, the influence of colonization, spice- hunting voyages and the demands of the western administrators, the cuisine of Malabar is an amalgam of Mughal (Persian), Arab, Portuguese,, British, Dutch and French cuisines. Biriyani, the most popular Malabar recipe is the product of the Arab influence. -

Several approaches dealing with migration has evolved the concepts related to the push and pull factors causing migration. Malabar Migration is a historical phenomenon of internal migration, in which massive exodus took place in the vast jungles of Malabar concentrating with similar socio-cultural-economic group of people. Various factors related to social, cultural, demographical and economical aspects initiated the migration from erstwhile Travancore to erstwhile Malabar district. The present preliminary study tries to focus over such factors associated with Malabar Migration in Taliparamba block of Kannur district (Kerala).This study is based on the primary survey of the study area and further supplemented with other secondary materials.
