  • A Dccconcepts “Modelling Advice” Publication
A DCCconcepts “Modelling advice” publication DCC Advice #11 Page 1 Wiring Point-work & Special track conditions for DC or DCC Wiring the track… In plain English, with diagrams! If we had a $ or £ or € for every time we’ve been asked how to wire track and point-work, we’d be writing this on a beach somewhere while sipping a cold beer! A great layout needs good trackwork, so first - a word about trackwork and getting good performance. Choose carefully! DO think about making your own turnouts if you have even moderate skills. It is not as hard as you think, needs only basic skills and tools... and we do our best to make it easy with our top quality gauges, trackwork frets and templates. PLUS we will soon provide a detailed “How to make track” tutorial too. Interested? Then call or email us and we will do our best to help you. No matter what scale you will model in, DO NOT even consider using insulated frogs! Yes, lazy retailers who do not understand what they sell - and modellers who have never done a proper job of laying track so it runs well may well recommend it to you… but do NOT be tempted. No matter which brand makes the turnouts, if you use insulated frogs, you WILL have small locos stalling or also suffer from wider wheels bridging the frog tip and creating momentary shorts that are hard to fix and really are a source of constant frustration. Use more realistic rail sizes please: Usually this will be code 55 in N, or Code 75 and 83 in OO or HO Scale.

THE SUPERS REPORT MAR- 2013 Vol. 20 Issue 03 Thank you Bill. I thought the layout run well and the guys I brought with me were impressed. I MAP for March meet. am hoping that I can get my guest (the young one) to eventually be a Division member. He likes trains and I hoping to keep his interest. I got to run 2 trains. If you didn't get to run you missed out. Of course, the impressive run of the day was the over 50 car double stacks train with pushers. It left New York and ran all the way to Butler. The really impressive feat was up the hill to Mt. Jewitt and back down the other side. Great job by the engineers. Then what can I say about the great meal that NORA put on? If you walked away from there hungry... There is something wrong with you. Again thanks Nora and you too Bill. Next meeting will be at Howard Helman's. His layout, if you have never been there (and I hate to say this because Howard's head might get TOO big) models the Western Maryland and is really WHY ME ? great to operate on. Well, here we go again. To another scheduled Divi- sion meeting at Howards'. Now it's not that his Western Mary- See you next month. Rolly land layout isn't in really great shape and isn't fun to operate on. But I hate his layout, because it's always in great shape and everything is in it's place.

  • NMRA RECOMMENDED PRACTICES RP-7 for Clearances and RP-6 and RP-8 for Multiple Track Centers for Various Radii
CURVATURE AND NMRA RECOMMENDED ROLLING STOCK PRACTICES March 2018 RP-11 Equipment should be designed and built to operate satisfactorily at restricted speed (20 scale miles per hour) through the minimum turnouts and minimum radius curvature specified below. For operation at typical main line scale speeds (see DATA SHEET D4d), specifications for a higher class should be used. Equipment in each class should be restricted from portions of layouts with less than the specified minimum radius and turnout frog. Use of the largest radius curves, properly eased (see DATA SHEET D3b, D3c, D3c.1), consistent with the design limitations of the individual layout, is strongly recommended for best operation and appearance. In this revision of the RP, separate tables are provided for traction (streetcars, interurban railroads, light rail, elevated or subway) and for locomotive-hauled (steam, diesel or electric) railroads. To allow construction of model railroads in available spaces, model railroad equipment is designed to operate on curves and turnouts which are much sharper than the prototype. The values shown below reflect a judgment of the trade-off between practical space requirements and the need to accommodate greater truck rotation by adjusting or eliminating underbody detail. Certain steam locomotives having 10 or more coupled drive wheels may need to have one or two axles with ″blind″ wheels (without flanges) to operate successfully. Certain models, particularly entry level, operate on tighter curves. Highly detailed brass models may require larger curves. TRACTION (Streetcars, interurban, light rail) CLASSIFICATION OF EQUIPMENT Class Key Description Street Cars A Streetcars, single or coupled with a tow bar or couplers.

Eric Brooman photo Others see model railroading with an eye on short trains running on casual schedules, as illustrated by this Eastern fishing village called Maggie's Cove, built by Dave Methlie. Jim Forbes photo And still others try to capture the excitement of express passenger trains on fast main lines, like modeler Bill Aldrich has created on his HO scale New Haven layout.
