THE SUPERS REPORT MAR- 2013 Vol. 20 Issue 03 Thank you Bill. I thought the layout run well and the guys I brought with me were impressed. I MAP for March meet. am hoping that I can get my guest (the young one) to eventually be a Division member. He likes trains and I hoping to keep his interest. I got to run 2 trains. If you didn't get to run you missed out. Of course, the impressive run of the day was the over 50 car double stacks train with pushers. It left New York and ran all the way to Butler. The really impressive feat was up the hill to Mt. Jewitt and back down the other side. Great job by the engineers. Then what can I say about the great meal that NORA put on? If you walked away from there hungry... There is something wrong with you. Again thanks Nora and you too Bill. Next meeting will be at Howard Helman's. His layout, if you have never been there (and I hate to say this because Howard's head might get TOO big) models the Western Maryland and is really WHY ME ? great to operate on. Well, here we go again. To another scheduled Divi- sion meeting at Howards'. Now it's not that his Western Mary- See you next month. Rolly land layout isn't in really great shape and isn't fun to operate on. But I hate his layout, because it's always in great shape and everything is in it's place. Where is all the dirt, the cob- webs and all the other junk and mess I always make when I WWW.div11-mcr-nmra.info work on my layout? And the floor! Mine is always a mess and his? You could just about eat off it. My thought is that he has his wife come down and scrub the floor every day. Even his Redbank Railroad snacks are laid out perfectly. I don't know? I have a hard time trying to find anything wrong with his layout? Rolly Miller Owner/Operator I go home and try to put my layout in shape. Since 1947 DCC Rolly Signature Scene Rockville Bridge here remains the only known model to scale. As a signature scene, it has good notoriety - at least in this state. On a Saturday recently, the creator of the castings for the bridge, Bob Jans of Yardley, brought four other modelers to Treasure Lake for a photo and run session. They are accomplished modelers and operators, and I have visited three of their layouts in previous years. They arrived from Tunnel Hill Inn in Cresson just after noon. A walk-through quickly revealed just how fast a study these modelers were. They each received a Time Table/Rule Book, a throttle and a Clearance Card and orders. Nothing beats a run over the railroad to understand what the layout is about. Soon five through trains were on their way, with Bob Jans recording the action and helping with challenges. Initially cautious about N scale, with some early stalls and derails, the group quickly adjusted to this smaller environment. Soon they appreciated just how large an area is modeled, enjoying long runs, interesting switch- ing, and appreciation for direction and distance. To my amazement, the layout worked very well, and most of the rolling stock except for one unmodified unit mineral train ran well. My visitors enjoyed taking pictures, film- ing long trains on multiple track, and the mix of passenger and freight move- ments. They had Time Tables with a layout schematic along with stations and siding lists to take home. And they learned the fine art of enjoying Vernors! Some lessons learned: The wide variety of DCC throttles among and within various manufacturers leads to difficulty breaking habits while learning new procedures; helices are a bane to impatient runners and switch puzzle artists, but are a sheer joy to experienced operators who enjoy prototypically long runs and the joy of moving tonnage over the miles; everyone has their own pace and penchant for perfection, so letting operators struggle with choices, problems and unusual situations leads to less, not more, frustration, and the host as more helpful and less critical. I still feel great having hosted the most successful op session to date. And I had just finished heavy construc- tion that week (which I assure you, is NOT the way to plan and prepare). boB McKay Pennsylvania RR Co.
