Vaughan Index 223 Editor 235 Contributors 237 n7 Preface The need for a new book on two-year college English was first recog- nized by Jane Christensen, then deputy executive director of the Na- tional Council of Teachers of English, who shares in this book's dedication. Jane was deeply interested in and committed to two-year college English teachers. In January 1990, she wrote a letter to Chuck Annal, chair of the National Two-Year College Council (NTCC) of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, pointing out the need for a new publication on two-year college English. Jane suggested updating Walker Gibson's 1979 essay collection New Stu- dents in Two-Year Colleges (NCTE), and mentioned to Chuck that I was someone who might be considered for editor. Chuck took the idea to NTCC in March 1990. That group approved sponsorship of a collection of essays on two-year college English and asked Chuck to proceed with plans for the project, which he asked me to undertake in the spring of 1990. I began work that spring by talking with a number of people around the country to find out what was needed and to seek advice. Most agreed that a book about teaching English in two-year colleges was long overdue and that it should be broader in scope than Gibson's earlier essay collection, which focused on students. All were encourag- ing about the project. Most offered strong opinions and advice, some of which came from established professional authors. Several insisted that all of the essays had to be "invited" to assure quality and to get what I wanted. For better or worse, and after considerable thought, I rejected that well-intentioned suggestion. I had much more confidence in two-year college authors, and I wanted to give as many as

Ofodu PhD, Department of Arts and Language Education, Ekiti State University, Ado- Ekiti, Nigeria Abstract The issue of medical aliteracy has drawn both scholars and medical practitioners’ attention in the recent years. The negative cost of medical aliteracy has continued to constitute major threats to health related issue which has resulted in high mortality rate, high medical expenditure and medical underperformance among others. On this premise the study examined the influence of medical aliteracy among senior medical personnel. The study employed descriptive research design and Chi-Square to test the research hypotheses. A total number of 50 questionnaires were designed to collect information from the sampled population through a random sampling. From the result of the analysis it was revealed that factors such as ineffective supervision of medical personnel, low patient literacy level, lack of personnel-patients engagement could lead to medical aliteracy among senior medical personnel. Senior medical personnel have the knowledge of medical aliteracy and its implications on for medical personnel and the public. Medical aliteracy has an implication on health sector performance which includes increase in mortality rate, increase health expenditure, widening of the gap between patients – medical personnel communication among others.

    XIV Passions: My Children, Teaching, and Nimrod The word passion has most often been associated with strong sexual desire or lust. I have felt a good deal of that kind of passion in my life but I prefer not to speak of it at this moment. Instead, it is the appetite for life in a broader sense that seems to have driven most of my actions. Moreover, the former craving is focused on an individual (unless the sexual drive is indiscriminant) and depends upon that individual for a response in order to intensify or even maintain. Fixating on my first husband—sticking to him no matter what his response, not being able to say goodbye to him —almost killed me. I had to shift the focus of my sexual passion to another and another and another in order to receive the spark that would rekindle and sustain me. That could have been dangerous; I was lucky. But with the urge to create, the intense passion to “make something,” there was always another outlet, another fulfillment just within reach. My children, teaching, and Nimrod, the journal I edited for so many years, eased my hunger, provided a way to participate and delight in something always changing and growing. from The passion to give birth to and grow with my children has, I believe, been expressed in previous chapters. The concept of literacy spans more than reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking instruction. In the field of learning, literacy encompasses the choices made around texts, the discussions and interpretations that evolve from texts, and the cultural norms that are revealed in texts. The students who arrive in the classroom are varied; it is imperative to critically analyze the systems teachers have in place for students to consider hegemonic messages in a meaningful way. The foundation of this study is determining teachers’ conceptions of transformative, socially empowering work, specifically analysis of their experiences and interpretations of critical literacy for engagement of student voice for global citizenship. Critical literacy instruction empowers students to analyze print and media to understand their world and open their horizons to the nuances and subtleties of the dominant culture that are represented in text and visual media. Inherent to critical literacy is pedagogy that provides opportunities for students to practice analyzing and reading with a critical stance and to develop habits of inquiry. Gaining insight into teachers’ perceptions of critical literacy how this impacts the work they do in the classroom is a valuable way to see how they engage their students as transformative agents of change.
