College Service Announcement Career Services Tips — Setting Smart Goals Helps You to Succeed Source: Derena Shafer, Career Services Advisor CCC, Ta Hall, room 305 Tel.: 856-374-4854 E-mail: [email protected]

he start of a new school year is typically a time where many will reflect on the prior academic term and set T goals for the upcoming year. Below are some tips for setting S.M.A.R.T. goals. You can use these tips to help you obtain any goals – personal or professional! What is a S.M.A.R.T. goal? The acronym S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Sensitive.

Specific: Setting vague goals is a primary area where we go wrong in goal setting! Vague goals produce vague results. For example, if you set a goal to “be a successful student”, what exactly does “successful” mean? By making goals specific, we define it and give ourselves something to aim for. A specific goal would be “get good grades”.

Measurable: “Get good grades” is specific, but it can still be better if we make it measurable. When goals are not measurable, how do we know when we have obtained it? “good grades” can mean many different things to different people! A measurable goal would be “Maintain a 3.25 GPA”. By making the goal measurable, we know when we have accomplished it!

Attainable: Many people with very good intentions have fallen victim to setting goals for themselves that just are not attainable. In order for you to reach your goals, you must set goals that you truly believe you can attain. While setting a goal of “Maintain a 4.0 GPA” is wonderful, it isn’t always attainable. “Maintain a 3.25 GPA”, however, is attainable and is still a very solid goal because a 3.25 GPA, while not perfect, is a strong GPA.

Realistic: Much like attainability, too often we set goals for ourselves that just are not realistic. “Maintain a 4.0 GPA” quite often is unrealistic, because a 4.0 GPA is a perfect GPA – College Service Announcement meaning straight “A’s”. Again, obtaining a 4.0 GPA is an excellent accomplishment, but in all reality there will likely be Presented by Gloucester Township that one test or one quiz that you do not get an “A” on. Setting the goal of “Maintain a 3.25 GPA” is much more realistic and you will therefor feel much more capable of obtaining that goal.

TimeSensitive: Every goal needs a time frame attached to it to encourage you to work diligently to meet your deadline. For long range goals (for instance a 3 year goal) you may need to break it down into smaller parts with different deadlines for those smaller parts! Apply this method to your academic goals for the fall semester to get your new school year off to a successful start!
