The town of Loceri is located among the green hills of Ogliastra, a few kilometres from the Gennargentu slopes, at an altitude of 206 metres above sea level. This area, where Mount Cuccu and Mount Tarè stand out, is rich in water springs and stretches out eastwards in a valley that descends to Cea beach, known for its red porphyry stacks. To the south you can see the pink granite cliffs and the embroidered peaks of Mount Ferru coastal massif, while in the hinterland you cannot miss the wonderful landscape of the Dolomite plateaus (the so-called Tacchi), with amazing caverns and geological and archaeological treasures. Sa Domu de s’Olia Ethnographic Museum and Vecchi Frantoi Museum house two ancient olive-presses for olive milling, evidence of an agricultural vocation and a heritage of millennial olive trees that only partly survived to the fires of the last decades. The most interesting events that take place in Loceri are related to a rooted and profound religious tradition. In May and October the protagonist is Saint Bachisio, who is considered the rain protector: a procession takes place, during which believers cross the river carrying the simulacrum of the saint. • High Differentiation Among Eight Villages in a Secluded Area of Sardinia Revealed by Genome-Wide High Density Snps Analysis
High Differentiation among Eight Villages in a Secluded Area of Sardinia Revealed by Genome-Wide High Density SNPs Analysis Giorgio Pistis1., Ignazio Piras2., Nicola Pirastu2, Ivana Persico1, Alessandro Sassu2, Andrea Picciau2, Dionigio Prodi2, Cristina Fraumene2, Evelina Mocci2, Maria Teresa Manias2, Rossano Atzeni2, Massimiliano Cosso2, Mario Pirastu1,2, Andrea Angius1,2.* 1 Istituto di Genetica delle Popolazioni, CNR, Alghero, Sassari, Italy, 2 Shardna Life Sciences, Pula, Cagliari, Italy Abstract To better design association studies for complex traits in isolated populations it’s important to understand how history and isolation moulded the genetic features of different communities. Population isolates should not ‘‘a priori’’ be considered homogeneous, even if the communities are not distant and part of a small region. We studied a particular area of Sardinia called Ogliastra, characterized by the presence of several distinct villages that display different history, immigration events and population size. Cultural and geographic isolation characterized the history of these communities. We determined LD parameters in 8 villages and defined population structure through high density SNPs (about 360 K) on 360 unrelated people (45 selected samples from each village). These isolates showed differences in LD values and LD map length. Five of these villages show high LD values probably due to their reduced population size and extreme isolation. High genetic differentiation among villages was detected. Moreover population structure analysis revealed a high correlation between genetic and geographic distances. Our study indicates that history, geography and biodemography have influenced the genetic features of Ogliastra communities producing differences in LD and population structure. All these data demonstrate that we can consider each village an isolate with specific characteristics.
