Together with the security region and municipalities, we ensure a safe event. We maintain close contact with all services and are happy to report that it now looks like the event will take place and perhaps even with little restrictive measures. At the moment, the corona measures are being scaled down, for both sports events and sport suppor- ters, there is sufficient perspective for the event to be safe and still have that IRONMAN experience. Because the rules are changing quickly and it is not clear which rules will still in place during the com- petition, we will send a separate message shortly before the event with all relevant corona measures that will be in force during the event. The discussion arose about the challenge of three sporting events; • Waikiki Swim over 3.8 kilometers, • Around Oahu Bike Ride over 180 kilometers, • Honolulu marathon over 42.195 kilometers. The evening wore on and they could not agree which was the most challenging. They decided to find out experimentally which of these events would be the toughest, by sticking them together and doing it. The first to arrive could call himself a man of steel. This resulted in the first IRONMAN. Twelve athletes managed to reach the finish line. The winner was Gordon Haller. IRONMAN Hawaii currently has 2500 participants. The world-famous Long Distance World Champi- onship had a mass start until last year. Now athletes are divided into different (age) groups and start with time differences. The following year 50 participants registered, but the competition was postponed one day and only 15 participants were at the start. The competition was initially hosted in Honolulu. From 1981 the organizati- on moved to Kona, where the official Triathlon World Championship is still held today. The IRONMAN triathlon became famous worldwide in 1982. Julie Moss was in the lead for the entire race among the ladies, but was hit by the man with the hammer 1 kilometer before the finish. Due to dehy- dration, she could no longer stand on her legs and crawled towards the finish. Hardly anyone remem- bers that she was overtaken by Kathleen McCartney just before the finish, but the images of Julie Moss went around the world and triathlon became a well-known sport. The finish line; “You are an IRONMAN” originated from the mouth of Kona speaker Mike Reilly. In one of his early years as a speaker, a friend of his joined in. Out of respect he spoke the words; You are an IRONMAN for his friend. The response from the audience and his friend was so overwhelming that Reilly decided to repeat it several times, with great success each time. From that moment on, the iconic image that athletes have at their finish when they hear: “You are an IRONMAN”! and it has become a goal in itself for triathletes to hear these famous words at their finish at least once in their sports career.
