ABSTRACT This project, completed at the WPI Hong Kong Project Center in collaboration with the Harbour Business Forum and Designing Hong Kong, evaluates the future of water taxis in Victoria Harbour. Water taxis exist in Hong Kong, and our team found that there is demand for this service; we observed and interviewed providers of current water taxi type services as well as gauged public interest through a survey. Based on frequent consultation with public and private stakeholders, we developed a vision for the future of water taxis. We hope our recommendations bring water taxis to Victoria Harbour. iii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The city of Hong Kong is transforming Victoria Harbour into a vibrant hub for commercial, residential, and tourist activity. Several large scale construction projects are underway to redevelop the harbor front. As these developments proceed, there are concerns about harbor front accessibility. Currently, most forms of transport in Hong Kong are focused inland, making the waterfront difficult to access. In order to advance harbor front development, transportation which allows for easy and direct access between waterfront locations should be developed. One possibility is to revive the old water taxi or walla walla (嘩啦嘩啦) services in Victoria Harbour. While some vessels still operate as water taxis, they are not organized enough to act as an effective service. Our project explores the possibility of organizing these various services and offers a set of recommendations to bring water taxis to Victoria Harbour. METHODS The purpose of this project is to provide recommendations for the development of an organized water taxi system in Victoria Harbour. To accomplish this goal, we recognized four main objectives: 1. Identify existing infrastructure and future developments on Victoria Harbour to determine suitable water taxi type service locations. 2. Gather information on current water taxi type services in Hong Kong. 3. Identify public interest in a water taxi service. 4. Develop recommendations for a business framework to organize water taxi services in Victoria Harbour. iv In order to fulfill these objectives, we: 1. Researched existing harbor infrastructure and future harbor front developments to determine current and future locations suitable for a water taxi service. 2. Interviewed locals and water taxi providers and observed their services at nine waterfront locations in order to identify the water taxi type services operating in Hong Kong. 3. Surveyed the public to measure interest and preferences regarding a water taxi service. 4. Interviewed government officials, identified legal requirements for the service, and led a workshop with public and private stakeholders to help develop recommendations for a water taxi service in Victoria Harbour. FINDINGS We identified the demand for a water taxi service in Hong Kong as well as the major components of an organized system. Demand for a Water Taxi Service Our observations show that these types of services already operate in Hong Kong, indicating demand exists; however, they are not currently known as ‘water taxis.’ This is reinforced by our public interest survey. Out of 508 respondents, 36% have used a local water taxi type service, and 89% indicated that they would like to use a water taxi in Hong Kong. Additionally, as future developments increase harbor front accessibility, we conclude that the demand for water taxis in Victoria Harbour will increase. Organization of a Water Taxi Service We identify six major components of an organized water taxi service: licensing, equipment, harbor infrastructure, pricing, booking, and marketing. We also conclude that for a water taxi service to be organized, an entity must exist which would be held responsible and/or accountable for water taxis to Hong Kong. v RECOMMENDATIONS Our recommendations are designed based on the fact that there is no current entity responsible and accountable for a water taxi service. Water Taxi Business Framework We are providing our recommendation as a phased process. For each of the six components of a water taxi system, we provide three phases which contain elements that increase in sophistication and complexity. Progression is dependent on two factors: time and the emergence of a responsible and accountable entity. Additionally, elements within each component may change phases depending on future circumstances. Government Involvement In order for this phased process to be implemented quickly and efficiently, we recommend that Designing Hong Kong and the Harbour Business Forum encourage the government of Hong Kong to establish a committee, containing representatives from all relevant government departments.     'British Small Craft': the Cultural Geographies of Mid-Twentieth

    ‘British Small Craft’: the cultural geographies of mid-twentieth century technology and display James Lyon Fenner BA MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2014 Abstract The British Small Craft display, installed in 1963 as part of the Science Museum’s new Sailing Ships Gallery, comprised of a sequence of twenty showcases containing models of British boats—including fishing boats such as luggers, coracles, and cobles— arranged primarily by geographical region. The brainchild of the Keeper William Thomas O’Dea, the nautical themed gallery was complete with an ocean liner deck and bridge mezzanine central display area. It contained marine engines and navigational equipment in addition to the numerous varieties of international historical ship and boat models. Many of the British Small Craft displays included accessory models and landscape settings, with human figures and painted backdrops. The majority of the models were acquired by the museum during the interwar period, with staff actively pursuing model makers and local experts on information, plans and the miniature recreation of numerous regional boat types. Under the curatorship supervision of Geoffrey Swinford Laird Clowes this culminated in the temporary ‘British Fishing Boats’ Exhibition in the summer of 1936. However the earliest models dated back even further with several originating from the Victorian South Kensington Museum collections, appearing in the International Fisheries Exhibition of 1883. 1 With the closure and removal of the Shipping Gallery in late 2012, the aim of this project is to produce a reflective historical and cultural geographical account of these British Small Craft displays held within the Science Museum.

With over 30 years of Keywords: experience gained from managing protected areas and a concerted effort to develop geoconservation and Coastal landscape geotourism, HKGG has reached a mature stage of development and can provide a well-developed Hong Kong Global Geopark Geodiversity example of successful geoconservation and geotourism in China. This paper analyzes the geodiversity, Geoconservation geoconservation and geotourism of HKGG. The main accomplishments summarized in this paper are Geotourism efficient conservation management, an optimized tourism infrastructure, a strong scientific interpretation system, mass promotion and education materials, active exchange with other geoparks, continuous training, and effective collaboration with local communities.

Enschede B.V. of the Netherlands. “2014 Hong Kong Definitive Stamps” will be released on 24 July 2014. In parallel, “2006 Hong Kong Definitive Stamps” on the theme of birds, officially released on 31 December 2006, will continue to be on sale while stock lasts. In addition to the stamps and philatelic products of the new set of definitive stamps, an official souvenir cover and other philatelic products have been created to commemorate the concurrent sale of two sets of Hong Kong definitive stamps. They will also be released on the stamp issue day. Official First Day Covers for “2014 Hong Kong Definitive Stamps” at $1.2 each for small-sized covers and $2.2 each for large-sized covers as well as Official Souvenir Covers to commemorate the concurrent sale of the 2006 Hong Kong Definitive Stamps and the 2014 Hong Kong Definitive Stamps at $1.2 each will be on sale at all post offices from 10 July 2014.     Harbourfront Commission For discussion HC/19/2011 on 7 September 2011 Planning a continuous cycle route along the harbourfront on Hong Kong Island, and Kowloon too PURPOSE This paper is to outline the opportunities and challenges of creating a continuous cycleway along the Hong Kong harbourfront and to propose a way forward. SUMMARY 2. As the people of Hong Kong increasingly take up cycling and remain eager to enjoy a connected waterfront, their often-stated desire for a harbourfront cycle route has not been adequately addressed. This is the right time to commit to the development of a continuous harbourfront cycleway to enable convenient access to our most prized natural asset, the harbour. 3. There are already many people cycling along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, using the road network and wherever a bicycle can reach. Some quite simple improvements would facilitate these journeys. And with a little more consideration, Hong Kong could have a cycling route that closely follows the water’s edge, providing a leisure attraction and transport connection that answers the longstanding calls from many public consultations. 4. Above all, the cycleway offers a unique connective function for the harbour and harbourfront, opening up new locations and activities. It is much more than a leisure feature, more even than a transport option. It can breathe life into our aspirations for a vibrant, connected, continuous waterfront.     CB(1)700/06-07(01) LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL PANEL ON PLANNING, LANDS AND WORKS Enhancement of continuity of the pedestrian links along the northern shore of the Hong Kong Island and the accessibility and environment of the harbourfront of the Hong Kong Island for public use Follow-up to the discussion on 25 July 2006 Follow-up Actions Required (partial) The Administration was requested to take follow-up actions as follows – (a) to provide information relating to the status of the proposed footbridge at Aon China Building; and (b) to provide information on the distance and the time needed to walk to the waterfront from the exits of the Mass Transit Railway stations from Sheung Wan to North Point. The Administration’s Response (a) The status of the proposed footbridge at Aon China Building As the column of the proposed footbridge would affect the station entrances/exits of the proposed Shatin to Central Link (SCL) of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC), KCRC has raised objection to the proposed footbridge during consultation. The Administration is discussing with the railway corporations the implementation details of the proposed SCL scheme in the context of the proposed rail merger. We shall consider the way forward for the footbridge proposal in conjunction with the SCL Scheme.
