Preface The escalating rate of property crime in New South Wales, especially burglary and armed robbery, and the consequent assumption that such crimes are drug-related pro­ vided the background for this study. The aim of the study was to examine this assertion scientifically. It was subsequently found that there is a link between the commission of property crime and drug addicti'on in New South Wales. It is always difficult for society to corne to grips with broad-ranging problems such as drug addiction and the growth of property crime. They impinge on several government jurisdictions, private organi.lations and members of the public living in many localities. It is for this very reason that governments establish broad-based bodies such as the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research and the N.S.W. Drug and Alcohol Authority. It is hoped that the information contained in this report will be of value in the establish­ ment of policy. A special acknowledgement must first be made to the N.S.W. Drug and: Alcohol Auth­ ority for its financial assistance. Without such assistance the study would not have been possible. In this regard the continued support of Bruce Flaherty of the Authority is appreciated. Abstract Families and Incarceration Donald Braman 2002 This dissertation describes findings from a three-year ethnographic study of male incarceration’s effect on family life in the District of Columbia. The central finding of the study is that the dramatic increase in the use of incarceration over the last two decades has in many ways missed its mark, often injuring the families of offenders as much as, and sometimes more than, offenders themselves. The effects of incarceration on families include practical hardships related to incarceration such as lost income and childcare, legal costs, and telephone expenses. Because prisoners are prevented from reciprocating, their families are not only materially impoverished, but the relationships within the extended kinship networks are eroded. Incarceration also forcibly restructures household composition, reshaping family life in ways that are entirely absent from policy debates. In addition to the direct effect of incarceration on gender ratios and father absence, incarceration also has more subtle effects on gender norms, encouraging behavior that is consistent with many of the common stereotypes of poor, black, inner-city families.

Each research group conducted three-month studies of the drug education programs and formulated recommendations for program modifications and new approaches. Major issues for fact finding included:(1) the incidence of drug abuse among high school students; (2) student attitudes on drug use and abuse;(3) the nature of existing drug education programs; (4) the effectiveness of those programs; and (5) students' perceptions of their drug education needs. The groups' research findings indicate widespread usage and availability of illicit drugs, failure of existing drug educationprograms to affect student drug usage, and the need for involvement of the community-at-large. The students repeatedly criticized the prevalence of a subject-matter orientation to school drugprograms, instead suggesting the need for a personal-problemsor social-problems orientation. Included in the report isa discussion of the limitations and weaknesses of this student project.

    Date Rape Cases Among Young Women and the Development of Good Practices for Support and Prevention funded by the Daphne II Programme of the European Commission Institute of Forensic Studies University of Malta Frances Camilleri-Cassar and Jacqueline Azzopardi Country Research Report MALTA 1 Abstract The Institute of Forensic Studies University of Malta is participating in a transnational study entitled “Date Rape Cases Among Young Women and the Development of Good Practices for Support and Prevention”, funded by the Daphne II Programme, of the European Commission and co-ordinated by the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies, University of Nicosia, Cyprus. The project involves five countries of the European Union including Cyprus, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta. Project partners are the Institute of Equality in Greece, Coalition for Gender Equality in Latvia, Women Issues Information Center in Lithuania, the Institute of Forensic Studies in Malta and the Mediterranean Institute for Gender Studies in Cyprus who are also the project co-ordinators and lead partners. The main aim of the project is to investigate the incidence of date rape among female college students (aged 18-24) in the partner countries and assess the attitude, and level of awareness among beneficiaries and target groups. The project aims to promote awareness and make policy recommendations for prevention of date rape and support to victims. The study adopts both a quantitative and qualitative approach: 150 women currently registered students at the University of Malta responded to an anonymous questionnaire; there were 2 focus groups with the participation of 20 female studens; and, 3 in-depth interviews with relevant institutional representatives: the Malta Police, Agenzija Appogg which falls under the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity and Merhba Bik which is a shelter for battered women and their children.

Knight1 Abstract The current “opioid epidemic” provides an opportunity to identify age-old social anxieties about drug use while opening up new lines of inquiry about how and why drug use epidemics become gendered. This paper reflects on the intertwined phenomena of opioid and benzodiazepine prescribing to U.S. women to examine how gender, race, and class inform social anxieties about reproduction and par- enting. Multiple discourses abound about the relationship between women and the “opioid epidemic.” Epidemiological reports attribute premature death among White women to the deadly combination of opioids and antianxiety medications. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that “every 25 minutes a baby is born suffering from opioid withdrawal,” leading to costly hospital stays for infants and the potential for mother–child separation and other forms of family adjudication postpartum. Primary care providers are reluctant to distinguish diagnoses of chronic noncancer pain from anxiety among their female patients. Taken together, these discourses beg the question: What exactly are we worried about? I compare and contrast the narratives of two anxious women on opioids to raise larger structural questions about pregnancy, parenting, and drug use and to interrogate the public narrative that women on opioids threaten the American family and thwart the American Dream.
