Rare Aberdeen printing of The Whole Duty of Man , the bestselling devotional guide which went through twelve editions by 1727, and attained an almost canonical authority in advice manuals of the eighteenth century. ‘ The Whole Duty of Man was intended to show “the very meanest readers” how “to behave themselves so in this world that they may be happy for ever in the next”. This best-selling manual’s prescription of morality and effort was balanced by an emphasis on divine grace and devotional practice: the result was sober, orthodox, common-sense advice pitched at the level of ordinary Anglican parishioners.’ [ODNB] The work is attributed to Richard Allestree (1621/22-1681), noted divine, censor at Oxford and tutor, who was an enthusiastic royalist, working as a courier to the King. He was later canon of Christ Church and provost of Eton College.

  • S Aint Gianna Beretta Molla
aint Gianna Beretta Molla (4 October 1922 – 28 April 1962) was an Italian Roman Catholic pediatrician. Molla refused both an abortion and a hysterectomy while pregnant with her S fourth child despite knowing that continuing the refusal could result in her own death which later occurred. Molla's medical career went in tandem with teachings of the Church which strengthened her resolve to follow her conscience while coming to the aid of others who required assistance. These views came into focus when she decided to save the life of her final child rather than think of herself.[1] Molla also dedicated herself to charitable work amongst older people and was involved in Catholic Action; she also aided the Saint Vincent de Paul group in their outreach to the poor and less fortunate. Molla's beatification was celebrated in 1994 and she was canonized as a saint a decade later in mid-2004 in Saint Peter's Square. Life Gianna Beretta was born in Magenta on 4 October 1922 as the tenth of thirteen children (just eight survived into adulthood) to Alberto Beretta (d. 1 September 1942) and Maria de Micheli (c. 1887 - 1 May 1942) - both members of the Third Order of Saint Francis. One of her siblings was the Serv- ant of God Enrico Beretta (28 August 1916 - 10 August 2001). Beretta's uncle was Monsignor Giuseppe Beretta and one ancestor was Father Giovanni Battista Beretta.[2] Two other siblings were Giuseppe (a priest) and Virginia (a religious); another sister was Amelia (1910 - 22 January 1937). Her baptism was celebrated at the Basilica di San Martino on 11 October.[3] When she was three the Berettas relocated to Bergamo where she grew up.

[00:00:50.480] [00:00:59.430] - Katy Ciao, everyone. Hope you're eating all the pasta and enjoying the tiramisu in your part of the world. You're listening to Katy bringing you your weekly virtual trip to Italy. Did you enjoy last week's episode on some of the smaller cities in Italy? I loved recording it, actually, and it really reminded me of how much I love those smaller places and why I usually include several into our itineraries for Italy. While Rome, Florence and Venice are nothing short of magnificent, if you want a different flavor of Italian life, the smaller cities offer something really special. [00:01:32.820] - Katy They are often steeped in history and so proud of their unique past and stories. And this is where you find and see people living and working and just going about their daily business. Today, we're going to visit another one of those cities and explore the surrounding area. I haven't been to Bergamo, but it was the last stop planned for, yes, you guessed it, the trip we had to cancel in March. And sadly, like nearby Brescia that I talked about in Episode 32, Bergamo was very badly impacted in the first wave of covid, but it's well on the way to recovery. [00:02:06.750] - Katy And I really wanted to hear more about it because I had some insights and it really did sound like a very interesting and lovely place to visit. So it was serendipitous that my new friend, Di Bortoletto, reached out and mentioned that she had spent quite some time there and would love to share her experience.

  • The Consortium of S. Alessandro in Colonna, in Bergamo
“To Live Piously and to Help the Needy Poor”: The Consortium of S. Alessandro in Colonna, in Bergamo Christopher Carlsmith and Louisa Foroughi Summary: This essay explores the activities of the Italian consortium of S. Alessandro in Colonna in Bergamo, through an analysis and translation of the Regola (Rule) that governed it for nearly five cen- turies. Written in Latin in 1363–65, and republished in Italian in the late sixteenth century, the statutes and other primary source docu- ments of this confraternity reflect the (admittedly modest) aspira- tions, disappointments, and achievements of one group of Bergamo’s citizens as they sought to achieve the “sacred miracle” of brother- hood. The essay also compares the consortium of S. Alessandro in Colonna to other Bergamasque confraternities, especially the large and powerful Misericordia Maggiore (MIA), with a particular focus on how confraternities in Bergamo supported lay and clerical educa- tion. Specific topics include the membership, organization, and social purpose(s) of a rather ordinary confraternity, here considered both as an individual case study and as a vehicle of comparison with similar pious associations. INTRODUCTION1 In many ways the Consortium of S. Alessandro in Colonna, founded in 1363 and disbanded in 1806, was remarkably ordinary. It was neither the first nor the largest confraternity in late medieval Bergamo. It did not outlast its breth- ren to emerge triumphant in the modern age. It could not boast of a distinc- tive apostolate within the city, nor were its leaders especially renowned in other areas of civic or political life. Apart from the tall column in front of the building from which the church derives its name, and some notable paintings inside by Lorenzo Lotto, Gian Battista Moroni, and Gian Paolo Cavagna, the parish church in which the brothers met boasted few decorative or architec- tural attributes worthy of note.
