El seminario fue inaugurado por el politólogo Jorge Castañeda, profesor de las Universidades de Nueva York y México. Asistieron también el diplomático Inocencio Arias, Embajador de España ante la Organización de Naciones Uni- das; el musicólogo Theodore Beardsley, Presidente de The Hispanic Society; el historiador Jean Meyer, del Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económica de México; Cristina Eguizábal, de la Fundación Ford; Carmen Díaz, del clacs de la Universidad de Nueva York; María Lozano, Directora del Instituto Cer- vantes de Nueva York; y Víctor Batista, Director de la Editorial Colibrí. Hubo debates con un público numeroso y activo, y además pintura, tea- tro, cine y música. En efecto, uno de los participantes fue el pintor Luis Cruz Azaceta, autor de las imágenes de la invitación-programa-poster del evento y también del ensayo gráfico de este número, donde le dedicamos la sección Homenaje. Además, la primera noche del seminario los participantes pudie- ron asistir a la representación de la obra Casa propia, de Dolores Prida; la segunda a la proyección del filme Si me comprendieras, de Rolando Díaz; y la tercera y última a un concierto extraordinario ofrecido por Paquito D’Rivera. Con la celebración del seminario y la publicación de este número, Encuen- tro de la cultura cubana quiere llamar la atención sobre dos aspectos capitales de las relaciones entre Cuba y Estados Unidos. El del espacio que a lo largo de casi dos siglos nuestros compatriotas han encontrado en aquel país para crear en los terrenos de la cultura, el deporte, la política, el trabajo y la empresa, y el de la influencia recíproca, mutuamente beneficiosa, que tan prolongado contacto ha supuesto para las culturas cubana y norteamericana. El gobierno de La Habana simplifica sistemática y groseramente la imagen de Estados Unidos presentándolo como «el enemigo» en términos absolutos. Pero los textos incluidos en este número prueban que la realidad de aquella nación es muchísimo más compleja, y que a lo largo de casi dos siglos de historia esa complejidad nos ha otorgado a los cubanos, por sobre las ficcio- introducción nes, tensiones y contradicciones que han existido y existen entre los dos paí- ses, la paradójica posibilidad de encontrar, justamente allí, en Estados Unidos, 3 encuentro espacios de libertad política y económica que a veces no tuvimos en el pasa- do ni tampoco tenemos hoy en nuestra propia patria. No es posible imaginar a Cuba sin El Habanero, de Félix Varela; sin Cecilia Valdés, de Cirilo Villaverde; y sin Patria, de José Martí; todos ellos elaborados e impresos en Estados Unidos. No es posible tampoco entender a nuestro país sin tener en cuenta los aportes de figuras como Lydia Cabrera, Lino Novás Calvo o Julián Orbón, cuyos restos descansan en tierra norteamerica- na. Y sólo un futuro de paz y democracia nos permitirá aquilatar en toda su riqueza la significación extraordinaria que tienen y tendrán para nosotros los aportes realizados por las decenas y decenas de profesores e investigadores cubanos, hombres y mujeres, que trabajan en las principales universidades de esta nación. Son sólo algunos ejemplos de un tema virtualmente inagotable, que desde luego no pretendemos dar por cerrado con este esfuerzo, y que tiene otra de sus manifestaciones más significativas en el plano de la cultura popular. Los cubanos no optamos por los toros ni por el fútbol como deporte nacional; escogimos el béisbol, un juego que operó en los albores de nuestra nacionali- dad como símbolo de independencia, elegancia y modernidad y que ningún avatar político ha podido borrar de nuestra preferencia. La música popular cubana, sin duda alguna nuestro mayor aporte al mundo en el terreno de la cultura, causó un enorme impacto y tuvo una grande y duradera influencia en la corriente principal de la música en Esta- dos Unidos durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, y a su vez, inevitable y venturosamente, fue influida por la música popular norteamericana. The elegant new ship represented a long list of firsts: the first ship that the line had built completely from scratch, the first cruise ship suites furnished entirely with the Ralph Lauren Home Collection, and the first custom-designed culinary studio at sea offering hands-on cooking classes. But, one of the most remarkable firsts caught many by surprise. As journalists, travel agents and the first guests explored the decks of the luxurious new vessel, they were astounded to discover that they had boarded a floating art museum, one that showcased a world-class collection of artworks personally curated by the founders of Oceania Cruises.     Teacher Resource Guide Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection © Armando Marino, The Raft, 2002 October 10, 2008 ABOUT THE PRESENTERS Guest Presenter: Merrill Watrous Merrill taught in K12 for 20 years, graduate classes on the teaching of writing, reading, and children's literature for 5 years, and at LCC for 8 years. Merrill teaches K12 teachers through the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Writing Program, and the JSMA. Her first book on the teaching of art and writing was published by Simon and Schuster, and she is now revising her second on the same topic, Writing in Color. Merrill has published widely for teachers of adult learners and younger learners including: The Magazine of American History, Techniques, Clearing, The Oregon Science Teacher, Instructor, Learning, Mailbox, Oregon English, Writing Teacher, Teacher and others. Merrill's K12 students published their own writing statewide, nationally, and internationally. She has won various teaching awards such as: a Monticello-Stratford summer fellowship, an LCC teaching award with multiple year nominations, inclusion in an Oregon English Best of 25 years' publication, and election to an honorary technology society. Merrill is passionate about arts integration. It is the major theme of her reading, her writing, her teaching and her life. She is the mother of a writer and mother-in-law of a composer (himself the child of children’s book illustrators). She was especially excited to learn more about Cuba for CUBA AVANT-GARDE because of her interest in the Spanish-speaking world. Her grandson Max, the love of her life at 13 months, is being raised to be Spanish-English bilingual.

    Cuban Heritage Collection Pregones | Spring 2020 Director’s Statement Dear Friends of the Cuban Heritage Collection: It is my sincere hope that above all else you and your loved ones find yourselves well and safe during these unprecedented and challenging times. In moments like these, staying connected and appealing to a sense of community (albeit physically distant) can lift us and give us hope. I know that for many of you, the Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) represents a place where we come together around our shared passion for and commitment to preserving Cuban cultural patrimony. Our mission to collect and safeguard these materials in perpetuity should give us a sense of reassurance and permanence against the general uncertainty that envelops our current situation due to COVID-19. It is in that spirit of connectedness and community that I share with you all that we accomplished last season and provide you with updates on what we have been planning for this fall. In the area of collection development, we have continued to expand our holdings—through acquisitions and donations—in subjects that represent particular strengths in the humanities and social sciences, such as theatre, art and art history, and cultural studies. To that end, we are excited to announce the recent acquisition of the professional and personal papers of Cuban film, television, and theatre actress Myriam Acevedo, known for her roles in Man of la Mancha (1972), Footprints on the Moon (1975), and the 1983 Broadway production of “La tempestad.” The collection contains photographs, audiovisual materials, theatrical ephemera, and correspondence documenting her career in Cuba, New York, and Italy.
