  • The Oceania Cruises Art Collection
THE OCEANIA CRUISES ART CoLLECTION THE OCEANIA CRUISES ART CoLLECTION “I had the same vision and emotional connection in our art acquisitions as I did for Marina and Riviera themselves – to be beautiful, elegant, sophisticated and stylish. The ships and art are one.” – Frank Del Rio 2 | OCEANIA CRUISES ART COLLECTION Introduction In February of 2011, Oceania Cruises unveiled the cruise ship Marina at a gala ceremony in Miami. The elegant new ship represented a long list of firsts: the first ship that the line had built completely from scratch, the first cruise ship suites furnished entirely with the Ralph Lauren Home Collection, and the first custom-designed culinary studio at sea offering hands-on cooking classes. But, one of the most remarkable firsts caught many by surprise. As journalists, travel agents and the first guests explored the decks of the luxurious new vessel, they were astounded to discover that they had boarded a floating art museum, one that showcased a world-class collection of artworks personally curated by the founders of Oceania Cruises. Most cruise lines hire third party contractors to assemble the decorative art for their ships, selecting one of the few companies capable of securing a collection of this scale. The goal of most of these collections is, at best, to enhance the ambiance and, at worst, to simply match the decor. Oceania Cruises founders Frank Del Rio and Bob Binder wanted to take a different approach. “We weren’t just looking for background music,” Binder says. “We wanted pieces that were bold and interesting, pieces that made a statement, provoked conversation and inspired emotion.” Marina and her sister ship, Riviera, were designed to eschew the common look of a cruise ship or hotel.

  • Martyrdoms Far and Near: the Jesuit Global Imaginary in the Life of Quito’S Local «Saint», Mariana De Jesús (1618-45)
Illes i Imperis 19, 2017, 7-33 DOI: 10.2436/20.8050.02.18 MARTYRDOMS FAR AND NEAR: THE JESUIT GLOBAL IMAGINARY IN THE LIFE OF QUITO’S LOCAL «SAINT», MARIANA DE JESÚS (1618-45) Ronald J. Morgan Abilene Christian University (Texas) [email protected] The first complete hagiographic life of Mariana de Paredes y Flores (d.1645), a work popu- larly known as La Azucena de Quito («Lily of Quito»), has rightly been interpreted in terms of the local significance of both the saint and the discourse surrounding her life and piety. And yet a close reading of Jacinto Morán de Butrón’s late seventeenth-century hagiog- raphy suggests that a uniquely Jesuit outlook —fostered by narratives of missionary travails, encounters with the pagan «other», and personal martyrdom, and deepened by the imagina- tive contemplative language of the Spiritual Exercises— informed the spiritual self-under- standing of this urban laywoman who probably never traveled more than a few miles from her birthplace. This evidence points to how Early Modern Roman Catholic identities reflect- ed both local relationships and global imaginations. Keywords: Mariana de Paredes y Flores, Lily of Quito, Azucena de Quito, Alonso de Rojas, S.J., Jacinto Morán de Butrón, S.J., Ecuador, St. Ignatius Loyola, Jesuits, global imaginary, proceso apostólico, 1597 Japan martyrs, Los Mainas.

i THE CUBAN BALLET: ITS RATIONALE, AESTHETICS AND ARTISTIC IDENTITY AS FORMULATED BY ALICIA ALONSO A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Lester Tomé January, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Joellen Meglin, Advisory Chair, Dance Karen Bond, Dance Michael Klein, Music Theory Heather Levi, External Member, Anthropology ii © Copyright 2011 by Lester Tomé All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT In the 1940s, Alicia Alonso became the first Latin American dancer to achieve international prominence in the field of ballet, until then dominated by Europeans. Promoted by Alonso, ballet took firm roots in Cuba in the following decades, particularly after the Cuban Revolution (1959). This dissertation integrates the methods of historical research, postcolonial critique and discourse analysis to explore the performative and discursive strategies through which Alonso defined her artistic identity and the collective identity of the Cuban ballet. The present study also examines the historical context of the development of ballet in Cuba, Alonso’s rationale for the practice of ballet on the Island, and the relationship between the Cuban ballet and the European ballet. Alonso defended the legitimacy of Cuban dancers to practice ballet and, in specific, perform European classics such as Giselle and Swan Lake. She opposed the notion that ballet was the exclusive patrimony of Europeans. She also insisted that the cultivation of this dance form on the Island was not an act of cultural colonialism. In her view, the development of ballet in Cuba consisted, instead, of an exploration of a distinctive Cuban voice within this dance form, a reformulation of a European legacy from a postcolonial perspective.

Cuban Heritage Collection Pregones | Spring 2020 Director’s Statement Dear Friends of the Cuban Heritage Collection: It is my sincere hope that above all else you and your loved ones find yourselves well and safe during these unprecedented and challenging times. In moments like these, staying connected and appealing to a sense of community (albeit physically distant) can lift us and give us hope. I know that for many of you, the Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) represents a place where we come together around our shared passion for and commitment to preserving Cuban cultural patrimony. Our mission to collect and safeguard these materials in perpetuity should give us a sense of reassurance and permanence against the general uncertainty that envelops our current situation due to COVID-19. It is in that spirit of connectedness and community that I share with you all that we accomplished last season and provide you with updates on what we have been planning for this fall. In the area of collection development, we have continued to expand our holdings—through acquisitions and donations—in subjects that represent particular strengths in the humanities and social sciences, such as theatre, art and art history, and cultural studies. To that end, we are excited to announce the recent acquisition of the professional and personal papers of Cuban film, television, and theatre actress Myriam Acevedo, known for her roles in Man of la Mancha (1972), Footprints on the Moon (1975), and the 1983 Broadway production of “La tempestad.” The collection contains photographs, audiovisual materials, theatrical ephemera, and correspondence documenting her career in Cuba, New York, and Italy.
