  • CLOS DU MONT-OLIVET Lirac Rouge
Wine Facts CLOS DU MONT-OLIVET Lirac Rouge The family estate of Clos du Mont-Olivet is the collector’s choice for traditional, aromatic and age-worthy southern Rhône blends. This multi- generational estate was one of the first wineries North Berkeley Imports partnered with in the south of France more than 25 years ago; since then, the estate has come to symbolize both what we seek out in winemaker- partners and importantly, what we hold true and dear in great wine. Always elegant, aromatic and long-lived, these wines reflect not only the rich character of southern Rhône terroir but also the subtle, spicy personalities of the region’s native grapes. Clos du Mont-Olivet is “one of the great estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape,” says the Wine Advocate. • And Cabernet Franc Is the Star
CAN WE BE FRANC? THE HUDSON VALLEY PREPARES FOR ITS CLOSE-UP —AND CABERNET FRANC IS THE STAR. Amy Zavatto he verdant, hilly climes of the Hudson Valley are known and praised for many things. The beauty of its rolling, roiling namesake river; its famed mid-nineteenth century naturalist art movement; its acres of multi-generational fruit orchards and dairy farms; T and, lately, as the celebrated place of culinary inspiration for chefs like Dan Barber and Zak Palaccio. But while these lands, just ninety minutes shy of New York City’s northern border, can claim the country’s oldest, continually operating vineyards and oldest declared winery, the cult of wine has yet to become the calling card of the region’s lore and allure. That might be about to change. 4 HUDSON VALLEY WINE • Summer 2016 Cabernet Franc, that beautiful, black French grape variety well known for its role in both legendary Right Bank Bordeaux and Loire Valley wines, is proving to be oh-so much more than a liquidy lark here. Not only does the grape seem well at home in the Hudson Valley’s cool-climate terroir, but collective work done between the area’s grape growers, winemakers, and Cornell University have tamed many of the conundrums that once plagued producers who yearned for success with vinifera. Now, with a force borne of a few decades of trial, error, and recent promising success, Hudson Valley vintners are ready (and more than able) to stick a flag in the ground for Franc. DIGGING DOWN “I’m of Dutch-German descent; I’m not big on failure,” laughs a region express itself with the kind of purity that wins critical Doug Glorie, who with his wife and partner, MaryEllen, opened acknowledgment.

The primary vintages were sourced wines from the Columbia Valley AVA. Hedges Cellars, as it was called, created the first commerical wine blend for sale from WA State. After three years, Tom (born in Richland, WA) and Anne-Marie Hedges (born in Champagne, France), moved from a sourced fruit model to an Estate Grown model, by purchasing land in WA States’ most coveted terroir: The Red Mountain AVA. Soon after, Hedges Cellars became Hedges Family Estate, when their son Christophe joined in 2001. Shortly after, their daughter Sarah joined in 2006 and became head winemaker in 2015. • The Merlot Magician
modern winemaking and now, with his Aquila Sangiovese, he had done it again. The story wasn’t there in the Chronicle’s wine section that morning; instead, a front-page head- line caught his attention, announcing that a huge fire had destroyed $100 million worth of wine in a warehouse on Mare Island, California. Thackrey had nearly all his wine, some 4,000 cases, stored in a warehouse on Mare Island called Wines Central and his first thought was reflex denial: ‘Hmm, I didn’t know there was another wine stor- age warehouse on Mare Island.’ He clicked open the story. The warehouse was indeed Wines Central and it had been burning since 3.30 the previous afternoon. Despite the efforts of 120 firefighters, 21 fire engines and 12 aircraft, the fire was still sending up a 700ft plume of smoke into the sky. ‘My reaction then was a fairly basic “Oh shit”,’ Thackrey says. ‘Outside of that warehouse I had barely enough wine left to drink myself into the grave. On the other hand I knew that building and I thought some of my wine might survive a fire there. It was a vast, vast military fortress built of reinforced concrete and steel and only one part of it was wood, so I knew it wasn’t going to burn to the ground. There was also no question in my mind that it was arson.’ The first call he made was to his insurance broker. He left a message saying they would have to file a claim, possibly a very large claim.

  • 2015 Readers Merlot
1RDRS5 20 READERS MERLOT 15 COLUMBIA VALLEY A.V.A. n outstanding Merlot from Washington’s revered old vineyards Conner Lee and Dionysus. Our Readers blend tips its hat to all exploratory readers of books and wine. Blending Conner Lee Vineyard’s 1992 old block Merlot and Dionysus Vineyards’ block A15 Merlot combines two super character vineyards. Elephant Mountain Vineyard’s Cabernet bring spice and complexity to the blend. This powerful wine offers fragrant cherries and chocolate with rich marrionberry flavors in this delicious easy drinking style. VINTAGE Vintage 2015 is Washington’s leading hot vintage and earliest ripening harvest. Our vineyards yielded fruit with record color and tannin. This is in alignment with our house style of rich and smooth age-worthy reds. Spring broke buds in March and flowered in May, setting the stage for the early harvest. Late spring developed small grapes on small clusters in all our vineyards. Summer temperatures were hotter than average and lead to an early July verasion. Together early and swift verasion are hallmarks of great vintages. Our fruit we shaded with healthy canopies balancing acidity and sugar ripeness while protecting against sunburn. We harvested summer fruits in excellent condition. WINEMAKING Dionysus we harvested August 26 into small fermenters.
