EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Stakeholders in the southern karoo region of the SKEP project identified the need for a more detailed vegetation map of the Little Karoo region. CEPF funded the project team to map the vegetation of the Little Karoo region (ca. 20 000 km ²) at a scale of 1:50 000. The main outputs required were to classify, map and describe the vegetation in such a way that end-users could use the digital maps at four different tiers. Results of this study were also to be presented to stakeholders in the region to solicit their opinion about the dissemination of the products of this project and to suggest how this project should be developed further. In this document we explain how a six-tier vegetation classification system was developed, tested and improved in the field and the vegetation was mapped. Some A3-sized examples of the vegetation maps are provided, with the full datasets available in digital (ARCVIEW) format. A total of 56 habitat types, that comprises 369 vegetation units, were identified and mapped in the Little Karoo region. -

Within our landscapes there are innumerable interactions between species, their environment, and one another, going on at any one time. Some of these interactions are especially useful to people, supporting life and livelihoods in a variety of ways. These include the provision of oxygen to breathe and clean water to drink, fertile soils for our crops, the pollination of fruit and vegetables that we eat and even the provision of aesthetic beauty. The benefits we get from our ecosystems we collectively call ecosystem services. How we use and manage our landscapes influences the quality and the quantity of the ecosystem services that they in turn provide to us. Focus on the Succulent Karoo The focus of this study was on assessing the benefits of ecosystem services provided by the Succulent Karoo biome to the inhabitants of the region and elsewhere. The Succulent Karoo, situated in western South Africa, is a semi-arid area that has been globally recognised as extremely conservation worthy given the exceptional diversity of plants, reptiles, insects, birds and mammals – which make it the most diverse arid area in the world. -

March 2011 Copyright © 2011 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved 1 Abstract Heuweltjies are below ground termitaria found along the west coast and the south-western and -eastern Cape. They traversing different climates, soil and vegetation types within the Succulent Karoo and Fynbos biomes. From a birds eye view, heuweltjies appear as near-circular landscape features, demonstrating clear difference in vegetation structure to their surroundings. A study of aspects of the structure and function of heuweltjies, mima-like mounds of south-western South Africa was undertaken. The main aim of the study was to investigate topsoil properties and processes and vegetation structure and the ecophysiology of plants growing on these mounds, and compare it to areas off these patches. Four study sites across a rainfall gradient were chosen for soil and vegetation studies (two within the Succulent Karoo and two at the Fynbos biome).
