Confusion has arisen in the literature over the absolute stereochemistry of the various clerodanes isolated. The revision of the absolute stereochemistry of clerodin (2),l the first member of the clerodane series,2 has led to those compounds with the same absolute stereochemistry as clerodin being termed neo-clerodanes and those compounds enantiomeric to clerodin being termed ent-neo-clerodanes. -

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Stakeholders in the southern karoo region of the SKEP project identified the need for a more detailed vegetation map of the Little Karoo region. CEPF funded the project team to map the vegetation of the Little Karoo region (ca. 20 000 km ²) at a scale of 1:50 000. The main outputs required were to classify, map and describe the vegetation in such a way that end-users could use the digital maps at four different tiers. Results of this study were also to be presented to stakeholders in the region to solicit their opinion about the dissemination of the products of this project and to suggest how this project should be developed further. In this document we explain how a six-tier vegetation classification system was developed, tested and improved in the field and the vegetation was mapped. Some A3-sized examples of the vegetation maps are provided, with the full datasets available in digital (ARCVIEW) format. A total of 56 habitat types, that comprises 369 vegetation units, were identified and mapped in the Little Karoo region. -

Within our landscapes there are innumerable interactions between species, their environment, and one another, going on at any one time. Some of these interactions are especially useful to people, supporting life and livelihoods in a variety of ways. These include the provision of oxygen to breathe and clean water to drink, fertile soils for our crops, the pollination of fruit and vegetables that we eat and even the provision of aesthetic beauty. The benefits we get from our ecosystems we collectively call ecosystem services. How we use and manage our landscapes influences the quality and the quantity of the ecosystem services that they in turn provide to us. Focus on the Succulent Karoo The focus of this study was on assessing the benefits of ecosystem services provided by the Succulent Karoo biome to the inhabitants of the region and elsewhere. The Succulent Karoo, situated in western South Africa, is a semi-arid area that has been globally recognised as extremely conservation worthy given the exceptional diversity of plants, reptiles, insects, birds and mammals – which make it the most diverse arid area in the world. -

In the current review, the databases including Web Science, Chemical Abstracts, Pub Med, Scopus Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Abstracts, and ScienceDirect, were searched to investigate the chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of Artemisia species. Artemisia species are frequently utilized for the treatment of many diseases especially malaria. The phytochemical analysis revealed that Artemisia species contained essential oils, volatile oils, alkaloids, flavonoids, quinines; tannins, coumarins, in addition to nutritional elements. Artemisia species possessed wide range of pharmacological
