In the same manner, the phenomenon of a “missing link” may be considered as a situation in which the quality of service has extremely low values due to the fact that no direct link exists between two points. As described in the above-mentioned document, as a simplified method, for individual road categories, one may take the following capacities in terms of number of vehicles as the average daily traffic: − 4-lane motorway: 40,000 – 60,000 PCU/24 hrs − roads of 2 lanes: 8,000 – 12,000 PCU/24 hrs As in the case of roads, there are a great number of factors determining the bottlenecks on a railway line. It is practically impossible to concentrate all elements in a single bottleneck measure. Karoll UW-L Journal of Undergraduate Research XII (2009) A Comparative Study of the Swennes Woven Nettle Bag and Weaving Techniques Amy Karol Faculty Sponsors: Dr. Connie Arzigian and Dr. David Anderson, Department of Sociology and Archaeology ABSTRACT During recent years, the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center (MVAC) has acquired permission to look at a beautifully preserved bag from 47Lc84, a rockshelter located in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. The bag is tentatively dated to the Oneota cultural tradition (A.D. 1250-1650) based on pottery sherds associated with it. Nothing of its kind has been found archaeologically in this region before, owing mostly to poor preservation conditions. Due to its uniqueness, there is nothing to compare it to within the Oneota tradition. Therefore, to gain a better understanding of this bag, a cross-cultural study was undertaken. This paper examines separate sites in the American Midwest, as well as textile impressions that are preserved on pottery, the ethnohistoric and early historic record, and modern hand-weaving techniques to determine the textile tradition from which the bag may have emerged as well as how it was constructed. INTRODUCTION Textiles in the archaeological record are poorly preserved in the American Midwest. Only in very few sites are they actually found, and in even fewer are the fragments large enough to be studied in depth. Detailed studies conducted on textiles are not numerous. Lacking in these studies is a cross-cultural comparison of types and materials from sites that do have better preserved textiles to try and determine similarities and differences in textile manufacture. -

They spent 80 per cent of the EU support on education, on building a knowledge-based society. At the same time more and more people question the rationality of these investments, but such opinions hardly gain any publicity. Will motorways improve accessibility? One of the main reasons usually brought forward to support the construction of motorways is that they will improve accessibility to the region concerned. Of course, if we only compare the time that cars, buses or trucks spend on the motorway with the time of travelling on parallel roads, this statement holds true in general. -

Abstract During the 6th millennium BC new cultures developed though new subsistence strategies like farming and cattle breeding – combined with sedentariness, new types of houses, new tools and vessels made of burnt clay. Musical instruments created after own imaginations were formed from clay. Fragments of six possible vessel flutes were discovered in Brunn am Gebirge/locality Wolfholz in site 2 and 3, which date 5670–5350 calBC respectively 5300–5250 calBC. Their shapes are cylindrical and subconical. On the front side, they show three finger holes, on the backside one. Reconstruction with suitable mouth pieces allow five tunes in the fourth and fifth octave with sound levels between 74–93 db. The ranges were calculated until maximal 62 m at surroundings sound level in the free field of 42 dB. Similar objects, interpreted as idols, were found in the Late Starčevo site of Gellénháza, Hungary, in Ovcharovo-gorata and Hotnitsa in Bul- garia. One ball shaped ocarina derives from Mramor in Makedonia. Longbones of birds were still used in creating musical instruments as the small bone whistle from Sesklo, Greece, Middle Ses- klo culture proves. Another fragment of a pipe with a finger hole was unearthed in Anzabegovo, Macedonia. The oldest pan pipe belonged to the grave good of a rich man’s burial in Mariupol, Ukraine, from the Lower Don culture. -

Hunters and Farmers in the North – the Transformation of Pottery Traditions
Hunters and farmers in the North – the transformation of pottery traditions and distribution patterns of key artefacts during the Mesolithic and Neolithic transition in southern Scandinavia Lasse Sørensen Abstract There are two distinct ceramic traditions in the Mesolithic (pointed based vessels) and Neolithic (flat based vessels) of southern Scandinavia. Comparisons between the two ceramic traditions document differences in manufacturing techniques, cooking traditions and usage in rituals. The pointed based vessels belong to a hunter-gatherer pottery tradition, which arrived in the Ertebølle culture around 4800 calBC and disappears around 4000 calBC. The flat based vessels are known as Funnel Beakers and belong to the Tragtbæger (TRB) culture, appearing around 4000 calBC together with a new material culture, depositional practices and agrarian subsistence. Pioneering farmers brought these new trends through a leap- frog migration associated with the Michelsberg culture in Central Europe. These arriving farmers interacted with the indigenous population in southern Scandinavia, resulting in a swift transition. Regional boundaries observed in material culture disappeared at the end of the Ertebølle, followed by uniformity during the earliest stages of the Early Neolithic. The same boundaries reappeared again during the later stages of the Early Neolithic, thus supporting the indigenous population’s important role in the neolithisation process. Although scholarship on public outdoor sculpture in the Southwest of Nigeria is becoming steady in growth, yet a reconnaissance study of the pottery sculpture in art practice and historical perspective has not been made. A study of this type of art, erected in the garden of Ife art school is exigent and paramount now that many of the works are not being maintained. The study underscores the inherent values in the genre of the art; and examined pottery sculpture types, its uses in public sphere and its development in morphology, iconic thematic and stylistic expressions. The study observed that outdoor pottery sculptures are impressive, apparent in sculpture multiplicity of type and dynamics; it is rare in occurrence in Southwestern Nigeria.
