One of the aims was to contribute to providing other images of Africa than the negative images of misery, war and catastrophes often conveyed by the mass media. Another was to encourage cultural aspects of change in Africa, and the dynamics of cultural production itself. It is indisputable that negative images of Africa increasingly dominate everyday reporting and therefore public opinion too. The generalised pessimis- tic pictures are in stark contrast to what those of us have experienced who have had the opportunity to visit Africa and work there. It was important not only to encourage alternatives to stereotypes and gen- eralisations, which portrayed Africans as helpless victims, but also to try to understand how and why, and to what extent these images had developed. This was the theme of the first conference organised within the new project on culture, coordinated by Mai Palmberg. This research project was called “Cultural Images in and of Africa”, and the seminar dealt primarily with the images of Africa developed in Europe. A selection of edited papers from this seminar is presented here and we thank the authors for their cooperation. We are grateful that we have also been able to include interviews with two prominent scholars, professor V.Y. Mudimbe and professor Terence Ranger, and texts by one of Africa’s most prominent authors, Yvonne Vera, and one of the world’s most renowned scholars specialising in African literature, Bernth Lindfors. The seminar was held in cooperation with the International People’s Col- lege in Denmark. We thank them, not least the college’s international secre- tary, Garba Diallo, for their warm hospitality and the input of work involved in making the seminar a success. Thanks are also due to Susanne Östman and Petra Smitmanis who contributed to the preparation and organising of the seminar. The images of Africa are a theme that will have to be revisited many times. This book gives a topical input to the debate through the questions it raises and the simplifications it rejects. Lennart Wohlgemuth Director The Nordic Africa Institute 5 Introduction It is something of an axiom that today’s images of Africa in Europe are largely negative. Such statements are taken as fact without much questioning. In this book we want to question them. Not that the authors dispute the existence of negative images of Africa. But what does this really mean? How were the im- ages formed, when and why? The concern with negative images of Africa rests on two underlying as- sumptions, which can operate independently of each other but are often con- nected. The first is the observation that what the mass media present us with about Africa are overwhelmingly negative features of today’s world: conflict and war, starvation and hunger, flight and despair, corruption and suppres- sion. In sum: misery. The other assumption is that the negative images and stereotyping are as old as the relations between Europeans and Africans. This is questioned in some of the contributions to this book. A rather general conception is that racism has coloured European images of Africa all along. Often this is asserted without any attempt to define ‘racism’. The ideology of racism rests on the thinking that one can meaning- fully divide the human species into races, distinguished from each other by different levels of inherited qualities, some belonging to higher ‘races’, some to ‘lower’. In racist thinking, some are hopeless cases by birth due to the ‘races’ they are born into. In paternalism the case is not hopeless, but those ‘less advanced’ must be guided by the enlightened (and needless to say, more powerful) into the light of civilisation. If the era of racism as a dominant and accepted ideology in the West seriously declined after the Second World War, the question is whether paternalism is still with us. The many pronouncements on ‘partnership’ as the new guiding principle bear witness to a recognition that equal terms have not characterised the relationship between Europe and Africa. This is a question of power, but also of the images reproduced. How do you study images? Many studies on images are based on “close reading”, and a search for the subtext. This also entails reading what is not there—i.e. looking for the omis- sions. There is not one single method with which to study images. The variety of approaches was a strength in the conference that brought together the authors of the papers in this book. The conference was initiated by the research project at the Nordic Africa Institute called “Cultural Images in and of Africa” and was held in Helsingør in Denmark (Elsinore) in November 1996, in collaboration with the Interna- tional People’s College in Helsingør. Papers were presented by scholars based 7 Mai Palmberg in four Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden), and in four African countries (the Republic of Congo, South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria). The humble beginnings were soon forgotten in the luxurious halls and civil power of the highest courts and assemblies of the known world. Who needs spiritual power when you can have civil power? The transition from being the persecuted to the persecutor, from the powerless to the powerful with Imperial and divine authority brought with it the inevitable seeds of corruption. Some say that Christianity won the known world in the first five centuries, but a closer look may reveal that the world had won Christianity as well, and that, in much less time. The year 476 usually marks the end of the Christian Roman Empire in the West.

    ������������������������������ Half a Man's Worth": Popular Ideology about Slavery in Democratic Athens We see slavery as incompatible with democracy; the Athenians did not. What was their justification? Since slaves were not part of the polis, there is little coverage in our sources, but we can at least see what Athenians of the 5th and 4th centuries said about the institution of slavery and slaves. Homer's comment (via Odysseus' faithful slave Eumaeus) that "Zeus takes away half of a man's ����� (worth or excellence) once the day of slavery comes upon him" is the first explicit statement of the moral inferiority of a slave, though it is striking that the speaker is himself a slave who embodies ������ (nobleness, bravery). There was a universal acceptance of slavery as existing from the very beginning, but chattel slavery in Athens was relatively recent. As the rights of aristocrats spread in Athens to the middle and even lower classes, slaves increasingly filled the menial tasks, including public services, such as police, bookkeeping, cleaning the city. There were three or four private slaves per household, as domestics, farm laborers, or industrial laborers (used by the owner himself or rented out). A few rich men owned numerous slaves. Most rich men would have owned about fifty, but even the most modest household would have at least one. An Athenian without a slave (or the money to buy a slave - about the same price as a mule) argues in one text that he ought to get public assistance. Manumission was infrequent and slaves were treated much differently than free: a slave witness can give evidence only under torture since a slave cannot be trusted to tell the truth - especially against his master - except through torture.

Horton Doctor of Philosophy in Education and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Na’ilah Nasir, Chair This dissertation is an intervention into Critical Whiteness Studies, an ‘additional movement’ to Ethnic Studies and Critical Race Theory. It systematically analyzes key contradictions in working against racism from a white subject positions under post-Civil Rights Movement liberal color-blind white hegemony and "Black Power" counter-hegemony through a critical assessment of two major competing projects in theory and practice: white anti-racism [Part 1] and New Abolitionism [Part 2]. I argue that while white anti-racism is eminently practical, its efforts to hegemonically rearticulate white are overly optimistic, tend toward renaturalizing whiteness, and are problematically dependent on collaboration with people of color. I further argue that while New Abolitionism has popularized and advanced an alternative approach to whiteness which understands whiteness as ‘nothing but oppressive and false’ and seeks to ‘abolish the white race’, its ultimately class-centered conceptualization of race and idealization of militant nonconformity has failed to realize effective practice.

    Irreversible Encounters and the Point of No Return! Katherine Olston MFA 2009 Abstract Irreversible Encounters and the Point of No Return! investigates the politics of Otherness through an examination of the position of the Westerner as Other within the context of Thailand. The project initially explores Otherness as a construction in general and then focuses specifically on the configuration of Otherness within Thai society, and its role in the enactment of core, interlinked ideals of Thai self-identification and nationhood. The research project considers the particular historical, political, cultural and societal factors that have contributed to contemporary Thai perceptions of the Westerner, or ‘farang’ as Other in relation to the Thai Self. Through sculpture and video installation the art practice delves into the intimate space of the experience of being Other, acknowledging the relative nature of identity and examining issues such as the shock of recognising the Self as Other and the subsequent realisation that the Self may simultaneously be Self and Other. The practice examines the barrier between belonging and not belonging, and the desire to traverse this barrier through adaptation and the modification of one’s identity, and the futility of this endeavor. Irreversible Encounters and the Point of No Return! reveals stereotypes and preconceptions extant in the way we view ourselves and others in order to explore the complexities and contradictions inherent to the process of Othering. Through theory and practice the project provides an insight into just one of those irreversible experiences in our lives where core perceptions of Self, and the way we inhabit the world are fundamentally challenged, forcing us into previously unknown territory, to a place from which we can never return.

Introduction It is perhaps stating the obvious to say that Terry Pratchett is among the most successful and well-known of modern-day authors. Certainly his name does not seem out of place if mentioned among other writers such as Stephen King, J.K. Rowling or Douglas Adams, who are all recognized even by people who may not have read any of their books. And although skill, style and originality are by no means prerequisites for popularity, as can easily be verified by reading a random collection of best-sellers, Pratchett is in the opinion of many a master of his craft, his craft being the writing of humorous novels. Even though he is still a living and active writer – although clearly at the end of his career – there is already a growing body of works studying and commenting on the impressive amount of novels that he has written since 1983, when the first Discworld- book was published.
