General architectural description: The Jerome is a three story brick building with sandstone trim and Roman-arched windows. There is a wide center bay flanked by narrower, matching bavs. A metal cornice runs between the first and second stories and along the third storv, where it is topped by a decorative masonrv parapet wall. There are carved sandstone capitols and bases on the pilasters in the central bay, along with sandstone blocks that read "Holel JgfSme." A wood balcony provides shelter at the entrv to the hotel and a viewing platform on the second floor, First floor windows are in a tvpical storefront configuration, upper storv windows are double hung' 22. Construction history (include description and dates of major additions, alterations, or demolitions): The building was painted in the 1940's. lt underwent a maior renovation in the mid-8O's that included removing the paint, remodeling the interior and making a large addition at the back. Historical background: Constructed in 1889 and named in honor of its owner, Jerome B. Wheeler, one of Aspen's greatest benefactors. A financier from New York, J.B. Wheeler was president of the famous Macv's Department Store. Wheeler invested in several mines in Aspen and was responsible for the construction of other important buildings in town, in particular the Wheeler Opera House. The Jerome was built to rival the Ritz in Paris and had manv amenities. After the Silver Crash, demand for luxurv hotel rooms in Aspen disappeared and Mansor Elisha took over the building as a boarding house, When the Washington School in the West End was torn down and the Red Brick School was under construction, some rooms in the Hotel Jerome were used for classes in 1941. 36.
