It has been 25 years since Monaghan Institute first commenced delivering Further Education and Training courses in our local community. Many thousands of learners have crossed our threshold to upskill, retrain and embark on a journey towards third level education and/or to employment. To mark this significant milestone in our history, we are compiling an archive, to include:

- Photographs captured down through the years - Stories and experiences from past students - Newspaper articles highlighting key events - Any other Memorabilia of note 1992 - 2017 We are asking all former learners of Monaghan Institute to share your memories and help us make this a successful and comprehensive collection. If you have images from your time spent studying with us, stories you would like Monaghan Institute staff launch the 25 year celebrations at Open to tell or other memorabilia of note, we would Day 2017 be delighted if you could send them to us.

An exhibition celebrating 25 years of Further MI Open Day 2017 Education and Training will be held on Friday 26th May 2017 from 6pm. All are welcome to attend. Open day was held in Monaghan Institute on Tuesday 9th March 2017. Tutor Shelagh Niland designated roles to her 7 Pharmacy Assistant students, who were on hand to meet the large volume of students and interested adults who turned up to view the facilities in the College.

The students assisted with the co-ordination of the day by with signing in visitors, giving tours of the facilities and answering questions on a wide range of topics. Students were also on hand to demonstrate their skills such as dog grooming, computer games design, hairdressing, cabin crew training and multimedia. There was a very positive reaction from all that attended and there was a wide age group represented. The staff would like to thank all students that volunteered on the day for their hard work.

Level 5 Art, Craft and Design lauch annual Exhibition MI Art, Craft & Design students celebrated another successful year at their annual MI Exhibition opening at the Market House, Monaghan. The event was officiated by Niamh Smyth, Fianna Fail TD and Spokesperson for the Arts and Heritage council who gave a heart warming speech congratulating the students on their dedication and passion for the subject. High numbers were in attendance as students proudly displayed their work with a total of 80 pieces being exhibited. MI would like to thank Niamh Smyth for opening the event, MI tutor Ruth Mannion and all the students for all their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Gaming students hold a Game Play event in MI The Computer Games Design students hosted their second annual Open Day Game-Play event recently in Monaghan Institute. It’s an opportunity to showcase a range of skills learned on the course and the first time most of them would have created a game. Their project, developed over a number of months, required them to create a 90-second game play experience with encouragement to incorporate their own concepts, humor and game genre influences into their work. Many of the Level 5 Games Design students developed individual projects with some using teamwork to complete the assessment and replicate industry practice. Feedback of the play experience was recorded from visitors at MI Open Day with high levels of positive Level 5 Computer Games Design & Programming students debut their games at Open Day 2017 feedback being recieved. The Monaghan Institute Sports Scholarships have been awarded to recognise excellence in talented sports athletes and to encourage outstanding performance in a variety of sporting disciplines. The selection of our scholars is based on their current performance and also considers previous sporting achievements. Congratulations to this years scholars; Jamie Sheridan, Nathan Weir, Conor Forde and Michael Galligan who were selected from a large number of applicants and have been awarded individual bursaries. Thank you to Bank of Ireland and Marian Mullen who have generously sponsored our Sports Scholars this year. This year saw Bank of Ireland contribute to the Sports Scholarship fund highlighting their investment in supporting talented athletes. Marion Mullen assisted greatly in developing this collaboration locally. In addition to receiving a bursary, each of our Sports Scholars gained access to our excellent sporting facilities throughout the academic year to enhance their development.

Jamie Sheridan currently competes in two sporting disciplines, swimming and rugby. He swims for Sliabh Beagh Swimming Club and plays rugby for Monaghan Rugby Club. In swimming, Jamie competes in the 200m Butterfly where he has achieved highly within his field including National and International competitions. Jamie is determined to continue advancing in this sport in the coming years. Jamie trains twenty hours a week, which includes early morning training from 6-8am before attending college and double sessions at the weekends. Jamie is studying on the Level 5 Sport and Leisure Management course in Monaghan Institute, with plans to progress to study a Bachelor Degree in Sport Science and Health in DCU.

Nathan Weir comes from Dungannon in Co. Tyrone and participates in cycling at a national level. He competes extensively in and the UK; frequently placing successfully in competitions. Nathan trains extensively which includes 18-21 hours cycling and covering distances of over 500 miles per week. Nathan’s goal is to compete professionally within his chosen sport. In Monaghan Institute, Nathan studies on the Level 5 Sport and Leisure Management course and plans to progress to the Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Health, Fitness and Sport Performance programme next year.

Conor Forde is currently a member of Monaghan Men’s GAA senior panel and plays as a goalkeeper. He made his senior debut for the Monaghan County Men’s team against Antrim in the first round of the Dr. McKenna cup. Conor’s achievements include playing for the Monaghan County Minor team for three years and winning the Ulster Minor championship, the first Monaghan team in 68 years to do so. Conor was also part of the group who won the Ulster league for the first time in 25 years. In the future Conor aims to continue playing for both his club Scotstown and Monaghan Senior team. Conor is studying on the Level 5 Pre University Arts (Liberal Arts) course and next year plans to progress to DCU to study a Bachelor of Arts programme.

Michael Galligan plays gaelic football with Monaghan Harps achieving medals in many different underage categories with his club. He was a part of the underage Monaghan development squad and progressed to the minor county team. Michael was an integral part of the 2012 minor team who beat Tyrone in the Ulster Minor Football Championship final in Clones in 2012. Michael was also a member of the Monaghan Under 21 county team over the last number of years. Michael’s recent club achievements include reaching a Senior Championship Final in 2015, which was the first time in 25 years the club has done so. In Monaghan Institute Michael has been involved with the college Gaelic team in 2014 and in 2016. In the future Michael aims to win senior club championship with Monaghan Harps, to play Sigerson with University of Ulster Jordanstown and to represent Monaghan on the Senior County team. Next year Michael plans to progress to University of Ulster Jordanstown where he will complete a degree in Sports Studies with an end goal of becoming a Physical Education teacher.

Monaghan Institute are proud to wish all our scholars well in their future sporting and academic endeavours. We recognise the importance of participating in sport and the positive impact this can have on the health of our students. Extra-curricular actives are encouraged in the college through various Sports Clubs and Societies.

Student Enterprise Awards

In partnership with the Local Enterprise Office, this year Monaghan Institute were delighted to host the Student Enterprise Awards. Approximately 170 secondary school students from all over County Monaghan competed, with a total of 47 school businesses participating. The winning team in each category – Junior, Intermediate & Senior will represent County Monaghan in the national finals in May.

Broadcast Video Production Show

Multimedia Students travelled to to attend the Broadcast Video Production Show. Exhibitors represented over 100 manufacturers of Film and TV equipment. The show included masterclasses from Phil Coates on filming low budget on DSLR for Cinema Camera users and Alister Chapman on filming in extreme environments. Students also took part in hands-on demos in the latest equipment including 360° video capture for VR, steadicam equipment including handheld and big rig camera stablizer systems as well as a range of the latest audio and film/video recording equipment from Sony, Canon, Holdan, Sennheiser and goPro. Multimedia Students take part in hands on demo for the Virtual reality head set.

That’s a Wrap Level 6 Multimedia complete filming their Psychological Thrillers

The Advanced Multimedia class were busy recording their creative films in January and February. This year recording took place on location in Rossmore Forest Park. Students demonstrated use of a range of equipment during their film shoots including HD camcorders, DSLR’s and Drones. We look forward to viewing the final result when the film premiere takes place in May. Level 6 Multimedia class finish their filming for their Psychological Thriller at Rossmore Park Fantasy Hair at MI Our second year hairdressing students got the opportunity, as part of their Level 2 City & Guilds course, to showcase a highly creative and imaginative side to hairdressing. They took part in a fantasy styling project based on a chosen theme and organised a photo shoot of the event to demonstrate their creative talents. This is just one of the many aspects of the course, which enables graduates to follow a range of career paths. The qualifications on the two year course include: QQI Hairdressing Level 5, City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing & Junior & Senior Hairdressing Trades. These qualifications are internationally recognised and as well as gaining successful employment in recognised salons locally, graduates can travel anywhere in the world working in the Tourism & Leisure Industry & can also progress to a career in Level 6 Hairdressing students showing of their finished looks for their Level 2 City and fashion & styling. The Students Union at Monaghan Institute organised a ‘Green Day’ on Wednesday 15th March, as a precursor to the St Patricks Day weekend festivities. This was a very enjoyable occasion for both staff and learners. Well done to the SU Committee members for the fun filled events.
