A. 1521436 ^ '^ O — *-> 31:! J3 ^ 2 ^ -2 ^ W >» a 2 SIR MALCOLM MacGREGOR OF MacGREGOR, BARONET, CAPTAIN, ROYAL NAVY, RETIRED, DEPUTY LIEUTEN- ANT FOR PERTHSHIRE, SCOTLAND By Caleb Clarke Magruder, Jr. SIR MALCOLM MACGREGOR, of MacGregor, Chief of Clan Gregor, was bom at Edinchip, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, August 3, 1873, ^^^d succeeded to the title upon the death of his father, Sir Malcolm Mac- Gregor of MacGregor, August 31, 1879. At the age of thirteen he became a naval cadet aboard the Bri.'annia and three years later joined the BeHerophon, the flag ship of the North American Station fleet, as midshipman. Passing all required examinations with distinction he won the rank of lieuten- ant in 1894, and for two years thereafter served as an ofi&cer aboard the Royal Sovereign and the Majestic. Having qualified as a gunnery lieutenant at Portsmouth and Greenwich he was next attached to the Excellent as a member of the junior staff. Joining the channel fleet he was for four years aboard the Hannibal, and then with the Mediterranean fleet aboard the Albemarle when promoted to the rank of commander in 1904. He next spent two years on the Juno before entering upon his duties as assist- ant to the Director of Naval Ordnance in 1907 and retired with the rank of captain in 1911. Sir Malcolm lives at Edinchip, built by the third baronet in 1848, which is consequently a modem structure, but its contents at once recall the past. This seat of the Chiefs of Clan Gregor stands on a wooded hillock above Loch Earn, near the heart of the olden MacGregor estates. The property is of some five thousand acres, "mountain and moor," and fur- nishes rare sport for baggers of grouse, red deer, and pheasants. Just beyond is "The Glen"' fringed with huge Scots pines, heather carpeted and loud with the call of grouse, with Craig Mac Ranaich standing guard and Kendrum Burn bickering by on its way to Loch Earn. Standing upon MacGregor tartan-carpet one looks up at oil paintings of dis- tinguished MacGregors, among them Sir Evan John Murray MacGregor, great- grand father of the Chief, as he appeared before George IV claiming the right to escort the regalia of Scotland; also the flag carried by the MacGregor regiment in "The '45"; the tassels of an English flag captured by the MacGregors; swords, dirks, powder-horns, and other trophies of war gathered by the MacGregors who have followed the sea and the field representing many climes and periods of time. Among the most prized relics are the gun with which the last of the blood hovmds used for tracking the MacGregors was killed before the revocation of the Acts of Proscription; a letter from King Charles I written to a member of the 4 American Clan Gregor Society family; a dirk given by "Bonnie Prince Charlie" to Evan MacGregor, his aide- de-camp, major of the MacGregor regiment in "The '45"; and the broad sword used by Major MacGregor in that uprising, reduced in size from a two-handed weapon used in the battle of Glen Fruin in 1602. Sir Malcolm is thus descended from the first baronet: He is the son of Sir Malcolm MacGregor, Fourth Baronet, Rear-Admiral, Royal Navy, who received the Crimean medal and clasp for Sevastopol, Turkish War medal, and medal of the Royal Humane Society, and Lady Helen Laura McDonnell, daughter of Hugh Seymour, Ninth Earl of Antrim; grandson of Sir John AthoU Bannatyne MacGregor, Third Baronet, Lieutenant-Governor of the Virgin Isles; and Mary Charlotte, daughter of Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Mas- terman Hardy, Baronet, Captain of Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar; great-grandson of Sir Evan John Murray MacGregor, Second Baronet, Major-General in the Royal Army, Governor of the Windward Islands, who assmned by Royal license the additional name "of MacGregor"; and Elizabeth, daughter of John, Fourth Duke of AthoU; great-great-grandson of Sir John Murray MacGregor, created First Baronet, July 3, 1795, Lieutenant-Colonel in the East India Company's Service and Auditor-General of Bengal; and Ann, daughter 01 Roderick Macleod of Bemera. The Chiefs brother, Alexander (Alasdair) Ronald, of "The Hermitage," Rothesay, Isle of Bute, is heir presumptive, and the latter's son, Malcolm Fin- danus, aged five years (1913), is second heir. At the request of its membership Sir Malcolm became hereditary Chief of American Clan Gregor Society in 1911. ANNUAL BUDGET and Program of Municipal Services Fiscal Year 2016 - 2017 CITY OF FERNANDINA BEACH THE HISTORY OF FERNANDINA BEACH The City of Fernandina Beach is a seaside community with a rich history located on beautiful Amelia Island. The Timucuan Indians were among the first inhabitants of the area. Then in the 1500’s the first visitors from Europe discovered Fernandina Beach. Since that time eight different flags have flown over our city. The French were the first European visitors to take control of the island in 1562. They were defeated by the Spanish in 1565 who named the island Santa Maria. The Spanish and the English fought over control of the area for many years. In 1702 the Spanish Settlement was destroyed and James Edward Oglethorpe (Georgia’s founder and Colonial Governor) changed the name of the island to Amelia after the daughter of King George II. At the end of the American War of Independence (1783), an international treaty returned the province from Britain to Spain, who then established a provincial governor in St. Augustine. Yet, in 1812, the “Patriots of Amelia Island” overthrew the Spanish and hoisted their flag. A day later their flag was replaced by the American Flag. In 1817, Scottish mercenary Sir Gregor MacGregor overtook the island and hoisted the Green Cross of Florida. Due to lack of funds and men, when Spanish troops approached to reclaim the island, MacGregor left Jared Irwin and Ruggles Hubbard (two American adventurers) in command. Shortly thereafter, Pirate Luis Aury arrived with men and money and claimed the island alongside Irwin and Hubbard for the Mexican Rebels.

" Why dost thou build the hall? Son of the winged days! Thou lookest from thy tower to-day; yet a few years and the blast of the desert comes: it howls in thy empty court." Ossian. Being, myself, a direct descendant of the Clan MacFarlane, the old "Coat of Arms" hanging up- on the wall one of my earliest recollections, the oft-repeated story of the great bravery at Lang- side that gave them the crest, the many tradi- tions told by those who have long since passed away, left npon my mind an impression so indeli- ble, that, as years rolled on, and I had become an ardent student of Scottish history, I determined to know more of my ancestors than could be gathered from oral traditions. At length, in the summer of 1891, traveling for the second time in Europe, I was enabled to exe- cute a long-cherished plan of spending some time at Arrochar, at the head of Loch Long, in the Highlandsof Scotland, the hereditary posses- sions for six hundred years of the chiefs of the Clan MacFarlane.

  • The Battle of Glen Fruin
The Battle of Glen Fruin Are there any Colquhouns in the audience today? Any Campbells? If so, I forgive you, and I ask your forgiveness in return for in the tale I tell today my forefathers and yours shed much blood. On the chilly morning of the 7th of February, in the year of our Lord 1603, Sir Alexander Colquhoun, Chief of Clan Colquhoun and Laird of Luss, rode into the broad bottom lands of Glen Fruin at the south end of Loch Lomond at the head of a small army. And he carried with him Letters of Fire and Sword; a license to kill MacGregors. Colquhouns and MacGregors, MacFarlanes and Campbells, Buchanans and MacIntoshes had jostled in that corner of Scotland for generations, borrowing one another’s cattle. But hostilities began to escalate in the autumn of 1602 when two young MacGregors were benighted in Colquhoun lands and asked for sup and shelter. They were denied, against the traditional laws of hospitality, and thinking themselves ill-used, they sought shelter in an empty byre, built a fire, killed a sheep, and had roast mutton for supper. In the morning they were apprehended and taken to the laird, who had them summarily hanged. In retaliation, the MacGregors raided Colquhoun lands in Glen Finlas, burning several farms, driving off much cattle, and killing a few defenders. On the advice of Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll, Alexander Colquhoun took a bevy of women to Stirling and paraded them before King James VI. Each woman was mounted upon a white palfrey and was said to be made a widow by the depredations of the wicked MacGregors.

On a dark day in 1502, the Perthshire castle of Weem (now Castle Menzies), home of the Clan Menzies chiefs, was burned by Neil Stewart of Garth and a band of Roro MacGregors over succession disputes for land tenure. The roof, furnishings and part of the Z-plan fortilace were destroyed. Ironically, a century or so earlier, the Roro chieftain in nearby Glenlyon married the daughter of the then Menzies chief in a period when relations were better.
