You're not the only one who's lost a brother this way.’ Brothers Wreck begins with a death: on a hot morning under a house in Darwin, Ruben wakes to find his cousin Joe hanging from the rafters. The play that follows tells the story of how Ruben’s family, little by little, brings Ruben back from the edge. It is a confronting and honest exploration of grief and loss but ultimately redemption. Jada Alberts, winner of the 2013 Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award, is an actor and theatre-maker with a powerful voice and a clear vision to tell the stories of her community. She is one of a growing group of young Indigenous artists who have looked to each other as much as they have to their elders for inspiration. Her play emerges from the gathering voices of this new generation and tells a deeply relevant and current story of the reality of life for many Indigenous families. An outstanding cast of Indigenous artists has been assembled. Rarriwuy Hick is gaining attention for her television performances in Redfern Now and The Gods of Wheat Street (ABC1). She is also a compelling stage actor, as well as a dancer and choreographer with Bangarra Dance Theatre. -

The 11th Association for Cultural Studies “Crossroads in Cultural Studies” conference is being hosted by the University of Sydney and Western Sydney University. Crossroads 2016 will bring scholars together in the beautiful summertime setting of Sydney University to engage with the past, present and future of cultural studies scholarship. The Crossroads conference has played an important role in the creation of a global discussion of Cultural Studies. It has become a major international conference where scholars from all five continents gather regularly to exchange research, views, and insights. Organized by the Association for Cultural Studies (ACS), the Crossroads conference is held every other year in different parts of the world. Previous conferences have taken place in Birmingham (United Kingdom), Urbana-Champaign (USA), Istanbul (Turkey), Kingston (Jamaica), Hong Kong (China), Paris (France), and Tampere (Finland). As a consequence of their different origins, populations, legal status, administrations and rates of growth, the post-contact western and eastern Muan communities followed different historical trajectories. This chapter traces the history of Mua, linking events with the family connections which always existed but were down-played until the second half of the 20th century. MEDIA RELEASE EMBARGOED UNTIL 11.00am WEDNESDAY 10 MAY 2017 FIRST NATION FILMMAKERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD The 64th Sydney Film Festival (7–18 June) in partnership with Screen Australia’s Indigenous Department proudly continues support for First Nation storytelling from Australia and around the world. Leading First Nation Australian directors will premiere their new works at the Festival, including Warwick Thornton’s Opening Night film and Official Competition contender We Don’t Need a Map, and Wayne Blair and Leah Purcell’s highly anticipated second series of Cleverman. “Sydney Film Festival is committed to showcasing First Nation filmmakers and storytelling,” said Festival Director Nashen Moodley. “Throughout the Festival audiences will find examples of outstanding Indigenous cinema, from the red sands of Western Australia to the snowy landscapes of the Arctic Circle. The Fantasy of Whiteness: Blackness and Aboriginality in American and Australian Culture Benjamin Miller A thesis submitted to the School of English, Media and Performing Arts at the University of New South Wales in fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy 2009 THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname: MILLER First name: BENJAMIN Other name/s: IAN Degree: PhD School: ENGLISH, MEDIA AND PERFORMING ARTS Faculty: ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Title: MR ABSTRACT This dissertation argues that a fantasy of white authority was articulated and disseminated through the representations of blackness and Aboriginality in nineteenth-century American and Australian theatre, and that this fantasy influenced the representation of Aboriginality in twentieth- century Australian culture. The fantasy of whiteness refers to the habitually enacted and environmentally entrenched assumption that white people can and should superintend the cultural representation of Otherness. This argument is presented in three parts. Part One examines the complex ways in which white anxieties and concerns were expressed through discourses of blackness in nineteenth-century American blackface entertainment. Part Two examines the various transnational discursive connections enabled by American and Australian blackface entertainments in Australia during the nineteenth century. Part Three examines the legacy of nineteenth-century blackface entertainment in twentieth-century Australian culture. Overall, this dissertation investigates some of the fragmentary histories and stories about Otherness that coalesce within Australian culture. This examination suggests that representations of Aboriginality in Australian culture are influenced and manipulated by whiteness in ways that seek to entrench and protect white cultural authority. Even today, a phantasmal whiteness is often present within cultural representations of Aboriginality.
