SPRING/SUMMER FEATURING PROGRAMME 2019

WWW.THEBREWHOUSE.NET 1ST & 2ND JULY 2019 WELCOME

Spend some time with us this summer and enjoy a picnic of drama, dance, music, comedy, exhibitions and family treats. We are excited to welcome Shakespeare’s Globe on Tour to Somerset, who present three of the Bard’s plays at the beginning of July. For those who like the avant-garde, we have internationally acclaimed music group The Tiger Lillies, an anarchic Brechtian Punk Cabaret. At the other end of the cabaret spectrum, the Ladyboys are back! There is lots of dance with Strictly Come Dancing’s Ballroom Boys, Matthew Bourne’s all-male Swan Lake and two Royal Ballet productions. We have music for all tastes from Glyndebourne to Take That, Swing Bands and Classical Concerts. The South West’s favourite comedian Jethro is back again, and cricket broadcasting legend Jonathan Agnew pitches up for an entertaining night at the end of the Cricket World Cup. Kids will love our holiday activities and shows A Commotion in the Ocean and Elmer. Look out for a Take Part programme to find out about our extensive visual and performing arts classes and workshops for all ages; and our monthly cinema flyers with a tempting selection of films, including The Greatest Showman Sing-a-long. We have some extraordinary exhibitions for you this summer: Jack Tierney (responsible for our wonderful wall mural) exhibits a collection of new work; local artist Sara Dudman curates an exhibition which includes work from her students. ROH DELAYED LIVE: FAUST TUE 7 MAY

Experience the decadence and elegance of 1870s Paris in David McVicar’s spectacular production of Gounod’s best-loved opera. Disillusioned with life, the aged philosopher Faust calls upon Satan to help him. The devil Méphistophélès appears and strikes a bargain with the philosopher: he will give him youth and the love of the beautiful Marguerite, if Faust will hand over his soul.

McVicar’s wonderfully theatrical production draws insightful parallels between Faust and Gounod, a composer torn between piety and worldly, romantic success. Michael Fabiano stars as Faust, with Irina Lungu as his beloved Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as the diabolical Méphistophélès.

THE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE THU 9 MAY

14 February 1895 was the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest - the zenith of Oscar Wilde’s career. Yet, less than 100 days later, he found himself disgraced, bankrupt and sentenced to two years’ hard labour.

What happened during the trials? Was he persecuted or the author of his own downfall? Using the actual words spoken in court, this is a thrilling dramatisation of the libel and criminal trials written by Oscar Wilde’s grandson Merlin Holland with co-author John O’Connor. Wherever possible, they have used the original words spoken in court. The first half of the play deals with the dramatic events of the libel trial, as Oscar goes from Prosecutor to Prosecuted. The second half carefully reconstructs the criminal trial from newspaper reports, eyewitness accounts and documentary evidence.

Feel what it was like to be in the company of a flawed genius - as this less than ideal husband was suddenly reduced to a man of no importance.

Join us to celebrate the 30th Anniversary year of David MacKee’s timeless children’s classic Elmer The Patchwork Elephant. Elmer has enchanted generations of readers with his adventures – 27 book titles have been created since 1989, selling over 5 million copies in 40 languages around the world.

Elmer is an elephant who has a colourful body, with yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, green, black and white arranged as a patchwork. He has a cheerful and optimistic personality, and he loves practical jokes. The stories are suitable for early exploration of the themes and issues relating to the concept of diversity, as Elmer discovers that when he tries to change his appearance in order to ‘blend in’ with the other elephants. But when his friends no longer recognise him, Elmer experiences how it feels to be treated like an outcast. It’s only when Elmer’s ‘true colours’ are revealed, his friends reassure him they love him because of his unique appearance and personality.

Elmer the Patchwork Elephant is a celebration of individuality and laughter brought to life with gorgeous puppets and catchy songs. This well-loved classic takes us to the jungle, where all the elephants are grey, apart from Elmer – who is a patchwork of beautiful colours.

WITHOUT COMPROMISE IV: JACK TIERNEY THE DANCING PLAGUE SAT 11 MAY TO SAT 29 JUN The Brewhouse presents the fourth exhibition in the series WITHOUT COMPROMISE that focuses on emerging artists. Jack Tierney is one of the paintsmiths responsible for our “Perchance to Dream” striking wall mural. This exhibition focuses on The Dancing Plague, which was a phenomenon that occurred in Strasbourg in July 1518. A lady started dancing in the street. A few days later, hundreds of people took to dancing for days without rest and, over the period of about one month, some of those affected collapsed or even died. There are many interesting theories regarding why it happened. The paintings will sit between the figurative and the abstract, focusing on dance movement to tell the story of the dancing plague.
