jazzweek.com • December 25, 2006 JazzWeek 8 Looking Back on 2006 The Top 100 Jazz Albums of the Year Based on Radio Airplay

By Tad Hendrickson and Ed Trefzger

very year we’re racing towards the finish line that is the time off during the holiday. And every year, doing my year-end overview barely qualifies Eas a workout as I stroll down memory lane. This is my third installment for JazzWeek and there is a handful more you could add from my days from at CMJ. One thing we get from these charts and from the Top 10s is a sense un- derstanding who our audience is. While radio folks get feedback on a regular basis through fundraising and requests (or complaints), this sort of insight is a rare gift for us as a writers and editors. We think we know stuff, but when we look back at what we wrote about, verses what is played (or not played), we get to sort of grade our ability to read the readers, so to speak, or to willfully strike out on our own, trying to sell something people probably won’t buy. We also get to see if we got something wrong or missed it altogether. Last year I was somewhat troubled by two tributes being in- cluded in our top three and readers responded by putting another tribute at No. 1 in 2006 – I guess that shows the extent of my powers to bend the panel of pro- grammers to me will! Seriously though, Martino is all-good in my book. With- out further delay, we give you the year in jazz, circa 2006. – Tad Hendrickson The Top 3 Albums

Pat Martino Remember: A Tribute To Wes Montgomery (Blue Note)

PAT MARTINO’S HEARTFELT tribute to former colleague Wes Montgomery, a guitarist who passed way before his time, topped the jazz chart in 2006. In his review, Ed stated: “One wonders if someday a guitarist will pay tribute to this album as a tribute to Martino,” and the answer is yes. One day, and soon. The results here were certainly better than 2005’s hit and miss Think Tank and it was intriguing to hear the cerebral and serpentine Martino take on material associ- ated with the meatier blues and pop-based Montgomery – Martino offered a re- vision but he, nonetheless, tips his hat to Montgomery’s patented use of octaves as well. Based on the number of spins Remember got, it seems that more than a few people were interested. Of the 10 tunes included here, Martino did strong new versions of “Four On Six” and “West Coast Blues.” Martino’s previous al- bum, Think Tank, reached No. 9. ➤ jazzweek.com • December 25, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Looking Back On 2006 (continued)

Karrin Allyson Footprints (Concord)

KARRIN ALLYSON TOOK quite a chance in redoing some jazz classics by adding new lyrics, either written by herself and others. Perhaps even more than the new lyrics, I really liked the way she brought fellow singers Jon Hendricks and Nan- cy King (a formerly underappreciated singer now nominated for a Grammy) to join the party. The two ladies had a nice conversational chemistry that I thought made this album special. Allyson also continued to grow as a scat singer too, taking that mid range purr of hers into a lot of different directions skillfully uti- lizing texture, phrasing, timbre and musicality. There were a few misses here, but radio, as well all too well know, doesn’t need to play every cut from a record. Highlights included “Everybody’s Boppin,” “Something Worth Waiting For” (which was a variation on “Con Alma”) and Oscar Brown’s “A Tree And Me.” Those footprints she made in the sand on the cover of this one certainly weren’t washed away by the waves. 2004’s Wild For You topped out at No. 13. Roy Hargrove Nothing Serious (Verve)

YOUNG TRUMPETER ROY HARGROVE has long balanced his love of traditional be- bop and Latin bop with the modern-day R&B of his generation. Rather than trying to mix the two genres, Hargrove opted to record Distractions as RH Fac- tor and Nothing Serious under his own name. An album of bebop played by his acoustic quintet (along with Slide Hampton sitting in), this was his first jazz album since 1999’s Moment To Moment. Much of the material here is originals written by the band with standouts that include the title track and the urgent “Devil Eyes.” In my original review, I pointed out that it sounded like Hargrove put more work into the RH Factor album, but great jazz doesn’t have to take a lot of work (at least, once you get your chops together!), it just has to sound good. Nothing Serious was taken quite seriously at radio, turning the title into some- thing of a misnomer. The Top 10

THE TOP 10 features seven different labels in it, with Verve gobbling up three spots on its own. The first singer appears at No. 2 with Allyson. Interesting- ly, there were eight different kinds of instruments represented with B3 (both in the top 5!), piano and vocals scoring a deuce (mama Costello qualifies as a singer and a pianist). After David Newman’s rock em’ sock ’em 2005, this year’s Cityscape didn’t crack the Top 10, stalling out at 11 (although missing by just one single spin.) Another wrinkle worth noting is the fact that Eric Alexander is the only saxophonist represented in the 10 – throw this fact at someone next time they claim that saxophone dominates jazz. Label Breakdown and Numbers in the Top 100

IF YOU THINK you got a lot of mail last year, you probably got even more in ➤ jazzweek.com • December 25, 2006 JazzWeek 10 Looking Back On 2006 (continued)

2006. In total, 722 releases had airplay reported or detected, up from 579 last year and 660 in 2004. There were 52 different labels charting in the Top 100 in 2006, compared to 48 in 2005 and 51 the previous year. Once again HighNote/ Savant, purveyors of prodigious amounts of radio-friendly fare, are tops among labels with 14 in the Top 100. Absent from this list of top labels is Verve, which had just three in the Top 100; however, all of those were in the Top 10. An honorable mention, also landing three in the Top 100, is Sharp Nine. Concord shows it is poised to be the big player in jazz, though. If the combined output of all its affiliated labels is included, Concord Music Group – including Telarc, Heads Up and the labels acquired with Fantasy – landed 19 of the top 100. TWO WEEKS INTO relocating to the U.S. from Italy, Roberta Gambarini scored a third in the 1998 Monk Competition. She won over a lot of folks that day and, as the line-up on this album shows, many of them were musicians – James Moody, John Clayton and Joe LaBarbera all appear. Eight years after the com- petition, the singer’s debut makes another big splash, landing at 53 with Easy To Love. There are different kinds of singers out there, and Gambarini definitely qualifies as a musicians’ singer – her a capella work on “Porgy, I’s Your Woman Now” is incontrovertible evidence of her instrumental skills. Other honorable mentions are Esperanza Spalding’s Junjo and Ruben Rogers’ The Things I Am. As We See It

PROBABLY THE BIGGEST music story of the year was the closing of Tower. A lot of labels took a hit, reminding them that they need to adapt to this increasingly changing marketplace. Old ways of thinking are certainly tried and were true once upon a time, but as we already know: a steady course and gut instinct isn’t the solution to big problems. Big problems create possibilities for big solutions. The Q&As this year often highlighted the solutions that some have hit upon and we hope to continue that information exchange in 2007. Just remember, no one gets rich in jazz, so be smart and do it with heart. See you at IAJE!

’d just begun to put my list together, as other people were sending me theirs for inclusion in the year-end Top 10s. It’s the prerogative of the compiler, I guess. But it’s cool to open each email and see what is on peoples’ mind, and each Iwas a reminder to me as I put together my list of some great music that came out this year. I’m proud to say that we got more lists this year than any previous one, which tells me that people care about this little jazz party that Ed and I throw each week (as opposed to the big one in June). – Tad Hendrickson
