jazzweek.com • July 31, 2006 JazzWeek 8 Artist Q&A: Steven Bernstein

his year could very well be remembered as the year that Steven Bernstein became impossible to ignore. He has four, count ’em four, albums coming out this summer T– Sex Mob and Millennial Territory Orchestra records, as well as a children’s album called Baby Loves Jazz and he did the for the soundtrack of the Leonard Cohen documentary I’m Your Man. With the exception of his Sex Mob work, the trumpeter’s albums sneak out on smaller labels with little fanfare, yet Bernstein continually puts together a broad range of projects that pull from Armstrong to abstract music, and usually does so with a sense of playfulness that is, in my humble opinion, sorely missed by many jazz musicians working today. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: Four records more or less at once, is that desirable as a musician? Steven Bernstein: It’s a Bernstein overload. I’m really so over it. It’s weird be- cause I don’t put out a record for a year and a half and then this. It’s just the way things went. I did a bunch of work last year and it’s all coming out now. It allows me to get a lot of press right now. Record sales aren’t so good right now People always anyway, so basically I make records to make records. I make records because I have to. I paid for the Millenial Territory record myself and licensed it to Sun- say: “Just put out nyside. That’s the way things worked. a live record.” Why make records if it’s not that financially rewarding? To get gigs? But with a live To get gigs and to really document this incredible band [MTO]. These are re- ally unique arrangements, but gigs always have subs on them because everyone record you can’t is so busy. The gig yesterday had six subs out of eight people. I had this date where everyone was in town and this great studio was open, so we did a record. hear everything. It was a miracle. People always say: “Just put out a live record.” But with a live “ record you can’t hear everything. There are really specific arrangements that I hear in my head and in the studio the players were able to hear them for the first time. You could always feel them, but you couldn’t hear all the stuff. Even the guys in the band were saying: “Oh, that’s what is supposed to happen!” [Laughs] We never rehearsed, so it was just like doing something in combat. How does it make you feel, to have musicians make comments like that? A lesser man may get worried. I’m not a lesser man. It’s really about communication. My whole thing is that live music is church. It’s about getting a feeling going and transforming peo- ple. Records are about specific things. Maybe it’s an old school thing, but I like making a record. I make them in a day or two with no rehearsal. Baby Loves Jazz was made in two days, no rehearsals. I feel good that I now have a body of work that was all done in the same way, except MTO. That was the most diffi- cult one to make because the band knew the music. Why was it difficult that they knew the music? My whole thing has always been about capturing that first moment in the mu- sic and reacting to it. Every other record has been done that way. There were a couple of songs that we didn’t get until the end of the session, later at night where we got three of the takes. We were a band that was recording at two in the afternoon and we’re used to playing at night, so by the time we had dinner and had a nice little smoke they were ready to play. You did the Cohen soundtrack. Are you a fan? I am now. He’s the first songwriter I’ve ever worked with where I can under- stand every word. I can’t follow lyrics usually, but his aren’t lyrics, they’re sto- ries. How did this Baby Loves Jazz thing come together? That was Andy Hurwitz’s idea. He’d been trying to do it for about a year ➤ jazzweek.com • July 31, 2006 JazzWeek 10 Artist Q&A: Steven Bernstein (continued)

with different labels. Finally Andy decided that he’d do it himself, record it live with two singers. I told Andy: “You just need to give me a list of songs. I can’t do everything.” So I did modern version of “Hokey Pokey” and a modern version of “Lullaby,” and everything else was public domain songs. Do you have kids? Mine are 11 and 13, but there is always kids running around the house ages one to 14. My daughter takes care of some of them. We’re really active in the school. My brother and sister have younger kids. The kids chorus was actually neighborhood kids. Where did introducing the instrument come from? There were these records from the ’60s for orchestra where they’d say: “And now, the bassoon.” Then they’d do the sound the instrument makes and do that for the orchestra. I did research, which is what I always do, and found all these old kids records at yard sales. I wanted to bring back those old education- al records. I had them and played them on this old plastic record player. My ➤ photo by: Michael Didonna idea was to have , Briggan Krause and Ben Perowsky do it.

And you guys are playing Monterey? How will that work? We’ll have a script, but we’re gonna do all the introductions and stuff from the CD, and the audience participation stuff. We’ll have kids in there so they can I’m making a do the kids parts and everything. It’s gonna be like a real kids show. middle class We haven’t talked about the Sex Mob record yet. It’s sort of dark compared to the other ones. living while The idea was that it was supposed to be an exotica record. It’s a chillout record, raising two kids but we were trying to create a mood, bachelor pad music. I brought in 12 origi- nal pieces that were all connected in some way to Martin Denny. We ended up and doing what I with nine on the record, two of which the band had played before. Goodan- devil [the producers] came to me and asked if we wanted to do a record, and want. How rare we met with Peter Gordon and we were shooting around ideas and he came “ is that? up with the idea of doing a Martin Denny record, which is great because I love Martin Denny. We were laughing going “exotica” then everyone looked at each other and said “Sexotica.” Then we had to do it because we had that title. [laughs]. I told Goodandevil that they could have artistic control, but the mu- sic would have to be 50-50 acoustic and electronic. We’re a live band with a unique way of playing and I didn’t want to lose that. [phone rings] Hang on a sec. No problem. [pause] That was my trumpet teacher who is 75 years old and still plays all the time. He just saw the Downbeat where there’s an article that paints me as a ris- ing star. Better late than never, right? I’ve got no complaints. I’m making a middle class living while raising two kids and doing what I want. How rare is that? I only play with my friends. That’s it. You tend to have more fun than most on the bandstand and you play a slide trumpet upon occasion. Do you get perceived differently than other more supposedly serious jazz musicians? That’s been a great thing, playing the slide trumpet. People take pictures of me playing the slide trumpet, and there is a lot of freedom because the instrument doesn’t have a lot of history. If I only played the trumpet, it’s so hard to escape Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard and Wyn- ton Marsalis because they are all trumpet players. By playing slide trumpet, it’s affected my regular trumpet playing, and I think it’s allowed to get by all those comparisons. It’s all in there, but you don’t hear it the way you would if I’d just played trumpet. It’s a great way to sidestep the issue. Exactly. That’s what I am – a sidestepper.
